From the Editor/PublisherTo our readers:It’s time for another school year to get under way and it is an exciting

time in Edgecombe County. At Edgecombe County Public Schools, Superintendent John Farrelly be-

as at campuses across the county.Farrelly’s program to improve student performance worked in Washington

County and similar steps are being taken to allow local schools to show performance improvements similar to those that came under his leadership in Washington County. The county system faces other challenges in addition to those of improv-

ing scores. Foremost on that list is developing the ability to deal with

the General Assembly and a declining enrollment driven by an exodus of students to North East Carolina Prep School (NECP).And it is at NECP where things are truly exciting.

its own campus, renovated and upgraded existing buildings on that prop-erty and made the move across town from its initial, temporary home, to its new home on what is known as Husky Lane. With the second year of classes set to get under way, students will be in a

brand new multi-story building as discussions of more buildings are ongo-ing as a ninth-grade class joins the mix.

projection that will fall well short of the 900 or so students expected in classes. By and large, those are students who were once enrolled in the county system.

work through the plans to build new facilities on both the Tarboro and Rocky Mount campuses following voter approval of a quarter-cent sales tax to construct a biotechnology and simulation center at Rocky Mount and a workforce training center in Tarboro. The Rocky Mount facility will house 12 of the college’s 22 health sciences programs, including CT, MRI,

-ing assistant, phlebotomy, radiography, respiratory therapy, and surgical technology.Special features of the 45,000-square-foot facility will be a simulated

hospital environment to provide realistic training opportunities for health sciences students and a medical and environmental health technology laboratory. The 24,000-square-foot workforce-training center will feature large train-

-ing. In addition, a dedicated industry work cell will enable new industry in the county to launch operations on a small scale while their permanent sites are being constructed. Existing industry will also be able to utilize the work cell to test new initiatives, and small businesses could operate in the facility while they build their client base.As we told you at the outset, this is truly an exciting time for education in

Edgecombe County!

Edgecombe Community College Enriches Community

Since its founding more than 45 years ago, Edgecombe Community College has

Education and training for the workforce have always been the guiding mission of the college. In May 2013, Edgecombe received a national award for its efforts to prepare students to be successful in careers and the workplace. The college received the ACT Career Preparedness Award. Edgecombe was one

of just four honorees that received national ACT awards, and the only institution in North Carolina to be recognized.ECC has developed a number of unique initiatives and programs in response to

local needs, including:• Edgecombe is the first community college in the area to operate a mobile

medical simulation lab, called the HealthCare Simulator.• Edgecombe is the only commu-

nity college in the state that offers I-TRIZ, a problem-solving train-ing program that complements and supports Lean Six Sigma, the gold standard for problem solving in business and industry.• Edgecombe is one of three

community colleges in the state that offers barbering.• Edgecombe’s is the largest

Health Information Technology pro-gram of its kind in North Carolina and one of only three accredited web-based HIT curriculums in the state.• Edgecombe is one of only five community colleges in the nation that offers a

program in historic preservation and the only one in North Carolina.• Distance learning at Edgecombe has grown by more than 300 percent over the

last five years, making it the fastest growing community college distance educa-tion program in the state.• Edgecombe’s Cyber Crime curriculum is the only program of its kind at a com-

munity college east of Greensboro.• Edgecombe’s newest program – Shooting and Hunting Sports Management – is

one of only three in North Carolina.Business and industry services and workforce development programs in the

Division of Continuing Education develop, support, and serve the college’s local business partners with customized education and training that help their start-ups and continued business success. The division is a leader in utilizing the WorkKeys® system for profiling, assess-

ing, and training basic workplace skills required by industry. ECC has awarded Career Readiness Certificates to the equivalent of over 13% of the Edgecombe County workforce. In an effort to better prepare graduates to succeed in a global economy, the col-

lege is placing greater emphasis on global education. In 2007, Edgecombe estab-lished a partnership with Hyria Education in Hyvinkaa, Finland. Over the years, the institutions have exchanged faculty for short-term study visits and held virtual classroom discussions. In 2012, a second partnership was created between the college and educational

institutions in China through the Global Classroom Alliance. About 35 middle and high school teachers and students from China visited the college in July through the Alliance. As a result, discussions have begun on developing a partnership in early childhood education. As Edgecombe moves forward, the college will continue to explore educational

and training initiatives that will improve the quality of life for those in its service area, helping its citizens secure a quality education and gainful employment.
