time in Edgecombe County.At Edgecombe County Public Schools, Superintendent John Farrelly be-

Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS) has a vi-sion for the students its serves: “Focused, Connected, Ready.” The school system serves approximately 6,700 students in kindergarten through the 12th grade. The

middle schools and four high schools, including an Early College. ECPS operates under the leadership of Superintendent

John D. Farrelly, who joined the system in July 2012. “The Edgecombe County Public School system is

Edgecombe Community College Enriches Community

Since its founding more than 45 years ago, Edgecombe Community College has

grown and matured into a superior institution of higher learning that touches

countless lives in Edgecombe County and surrounding areas.

About 3,000 students enroll each semester in the college’s degree, diploma, and

enroll in continuing education classes.

Education and training for the workforce have always been the guiding mission of the college. In May 2013, Edgecombe received a national award for its efforts to prepare students to be successful in careers and the workplace.The college received the ACT Career Preparedness Award. Edgecombe was one

of just four honorees that received national ACT awards, and the only institution in North Carolina to be recognized.ECC has developed a number of unique initiatives and programs in response to

local needs, including:• Edgecombe is the first community college in the area to operate a mobile

medical simulation lab, called the HealthCare Simulator.• Edgecombe is the only commu-

nity college in the state that offers I-TRIZ, a problem-solving train-ing program that complements and supports Lean Six Sigma, the gold standard for problem solving in business and industry.• Edgecombe is one of three

community colleges in the state that offers barbering.• Edgecombe’s is the largest

Health Information Technology pro-gram of its kind in North Carolina and one of only three accredited web-based HIT curriculums in the state.• Edgecombe is one of only five community colleges in the nation that offers a

program in historic preservation and the only one in North Carolina.• Distance learning at Edgecombe has grown by more than 300 percent over the

last five years, making it the fastest growing community college distance educa-tion program in the state.• Edgecombe’s Cyber Crime curriculum is the only program of its kind at a com-

munity college east of Greensboro.• Edgecombe’s newest program – Shooting and Hunting Sports Management – is

one of only three in North Carolina.Business and industry services and workforce development programs in the

institutions in China through the Global Classroom Alliance. About 35 middle and high school teachers and students from China visited the college in July through the Alliance. As a result, discussions have begun on developing a partnership in early childhood education.As Edgecombe moves forward, the college will continue to explore educational

and training initiatives that will improve the quality of life for those in its service area, helping its citizens secure a quality education and gainful employment.

Career and College Promise

Qualified North Carolina juniors and seniors can get a head start on their

educational and career goals at Edgecombe Community College.

Career and College Promise provides three pathways to help eligible students.

College TransferStudents can earn tuition-free college credits toward a four-year degree by completing a 44-core credit diploma.

All of these college credits will transfer to a four-year degree program at one

of the UNC institutions and many North Carolina private colleges.

Technical CareerStudents can earn tuition-free college credits at ECC toward any entry-level

job, certificate, or diploma in a technical field.

Cooperative Innovative High SchoolsStudents can earn tuition-free college

credits as high school freshmen by attending Edgecombe Early College

High School. Individuals should apply in February of their 8th grade year.

Forbes recently named Taylor Swift to its list of most influential celebrities, but just six years ago, Swift was booking small ven-ues for concerts in places like Allentown, Pa., Bethel, N.Y., and Tarboro.By the time she performed at Edgecombe Community College in

February 2008, Swift’s star ticket was punched. Just a few months earlier, she won the Country Music Association’s Horizon Award for Best New Artist.Swift is one of two performers who has played sold-out shows at

the college’s Keihin Auditorium. The other was B.B. King in 2004.Edgecombe Community College is celebrating that distinction
