FREE Memory Screen Are you concerned about your memory? It is important, as we get older, to rec-ognize the changes we may experience, especially in relation to our memory. A cognitive screen/memory screen is defined as a wellness tool that helps identify possible changes in memory and cognition. It creates a baseline of where a

person is at, so that future changes can be monitored. This is not a diagnostic tool but a screen that can provide early detection for dementia. The memory screen process is very simple, in which you will be asked to answer some questions and complete a task. The screen takes about 15-30 minutes.

Early detection is important because: It allows persons with dementia to prioritize and to be pro-active in planning for their futures; Current treatments are more effective in earlier stages of Alzheimer’s Disease; There is greater opportunity to educate caregivers; It may improve quality of life for persons with dementia and their families and may help to control long-term care costs. The memory screens will be provided by Candice LeGros, Dementia Care Specialist, Milwaukee County Aging and Disability Resource Center.

Please call 414-423-2110, to schedule your free memory screen. Tuesday, June 4, at the Greendale Health Department, 5650 Parking Street. Appointments are available from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost is FREE.

Scout Catholic Awards This year was a special year for Boy Scouts completing Catholic Awards.

We had 5 – 2nd grade Cub Scouts, who earned the Light of Christ. They are Luke R., Max W., Elijah C., Leo T., and Daniel R. This program helps the boys develop a personal relationship with Jesus.

Next, we had 14 – 4th grade Cub Scouts, who earned the Parvuli Dei. They are Edwin R., Maxum P., Rory B., Aaron W., Nicholas F., Cole N., Carl V., Maxwell M., Brendan Z., Tyson M., George L., Luke M., Jonah R., and Payton C. Parvuli Dei means Child of God, and this program helps the boys discover the presence of God in their daily lives and helps them develop a good, positive self-image through contributions they can make to their parish and community.

Next, we had 9 – 6th–8th grade Boy Scouts (from Troops 506 and 539 and boys from many area parishes) who earned the Ad Altare Dei. They are Jacob R., Jon R., Matthew M., Cole B., Nicho-lai G., Tony G., Declan B., Benjamin M., and Jacob M. Ad Altare Dei means To The Altar of God. This program was an in-depth study of the seven Sacraments. They not only learned about the Sacraments but also discussed how the Scout Oath and Law connect within our Sacramen-tal growth to help us live good and spiritual lives in all facets of our early teen years.

Finally, we had 3 – 10th grade Boy Scouts earn the Pope Pius Award. They are Evan S., Jack F., and Joseph M. This program centers on vocations – how we choose to live our lives now and in the future. With the wonderful assistance of Deacon Jonathon, the boys gained a greater insight into the lives of seminarians and had great discussions on what is important in life and how to show that in today’s high school society. These three high school boys were also presented with the Pillars of Our Faith award for completing all 4 of the Boy Scout Awards between 2nd grade and High School.

Scouting is a wonderful program for our children. Scouts are asked to include a Duty to God component to their yearly achievements. Whether it is the Catholic Award programs, community service or attending Mass together; keeping faith with peers truly helps both the Scouting pro-gram and their Catholic life and identity.

How Does An Adult Prepare To Become Catholic The way an adult prepares to become Catholic is through the RCIA process. (RCIA—Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). This process is for unbaptized adults and those baptized in other Christian traditions that wish to be received into the Catholic Church. It is also for those baptized Catholics who have not been raised in the faith, and who now wish to complete their Initiation Sacraments. The reception of the sacra-ments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist is celebrated annually at the Easter Vigil. The preparation process takes place throughout the year. This year, our RCIA inquiry sessions will begin on September 18. For more information, contact Sister Eileen at [email protected]; 414-421-2442 x 224.

Laudato Si – “Praise Be To You,” From The Care

For Creation Committee Pope Francis has challenged all of us to “replace consumption with sacri-fice, greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing.” Each month for four months, the committee will offer a “One Simple Act” sugges-tion to incorporate in our daily lives. Two weeks of doing something can make it a habit.

From Pope Francis’ encyclical letter: By virtue of our unique dignity and our gift of intelli-gence, we are called to respect creation and its inherent laws, for “the Lord by wisdom found-ed the earth” (Prv 3:19).

AVOID USING DISPOSABLE PLASTIC BAGS, SUCH AS SHOPPING BAGS, ZIPLOC BAGS, ETC. The EPA estimates that between 500 billion and 1 trillion bags are used annual-ly, and over 99% of those are landfilled or end up as litter. Use reusable bags or containers instead.

School Scene The 4K students recently celebrated Moth-er’s Day, with a festive party at school along with their special grown up! Pictured here are the 4K students from Ms. U’s (Uciechowski) class at our Mother’s Day event that took place in the St. Al-phonsus Church’s Community Room. The students and parents were able to spend the morning doing fun activities together! They played games, made bracelets, col-ored pictures, built puzzles, played tic-tac-toe, drew a heart together and enjoyed a snack. The Moms also received a special picture and plant made by their 4K student! This event was also a perfect time for the families to get to know one another, exchange phone numbers, and make plans to get together over the summer so that our friendships and bonds can continue to grow throughout our exciting and meaningful experience here at St. Alphonsus School.

Growing in Faith: Past, Present, and Future “May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace…” – Romans 15:13

Saint Alphonsus Parish Community has a long history of providing opportunities to assist adults in dynamic Christian living. Every August and January, all parish households are mailed a special brochure de-scribing these opportunities. Some are one-time programs; others are studies or faith-sharing groups, which take place over several months. We try to balance daytime and evening offerings to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules.

To review the past year: Scripture study, Milwaukee history, Theology, Faith-Sharing, and book discussions drew many folks from our parish and the community-at-large. Doctor Dan Scholz engaged us with his “Greek Pilgrimage for Armchair Travelers” and “What to Expect from the Gospel of Luke.” Professor Stephen Hauser amazed us with his review of the 1968 Presidential Primary in Wisconsin, and how it af-fected the General Election. Historian John Gurda drew a standing-room only crowd with his “Milwaukee: City of Neighborhoods,” while Fr. Aaron reminded us of the Church’s teaching, spiritual insights, and practical suggestions, as we each face our life’s ending. Small Faith Communities shared Pope Francis’ exhortation on holiness (“Gaudete et Exsultate”), as well as the Sunday Scriptures, while the ever faithful Little Rock Scripture group shared the “Word of God at Vatican II” and “Paul’s Letters from Prison.” Parishioner Ed Block facilitated two ani-mated book discussions in our renovated Parish Library. Mary Mates-tic offered A Morning for Women, and Sr. Eileen facilitated two reflec-tion sessions on saints, using Bishop Robert Barron’s Pivotal Players DVD series. Lent brought Terrific Tuesdays with Fr. Britto and Jim Gill,

and The Morning for Men with Fr. Brad Krawczyk. Winter challenged us with two cancellations, Sr. Bea Dorsey’s “The Story of Adam and Eve,” and “Mary Todd Lincoln,” with Jessica Michna, a Living Historian. (Both programs will be offered again in 2019-2020.)

Our most outstanding faith experience was our Lenten Parish Mission, “No Greater Love,” led by Friar Johnpaul Cafiero, OFM. For a March weekend and three special sessions, Fr. Johnpaul en-gaged us with reflections and rituals that were enjoyable, inspiring, and faith-strengthening. Folks were eager to hear Fr. Johnpaul’s mes-sage; attendance remained high throughout the Mission. (Please note: we hope to have Fr. Cafiero return in Lent 2021.)

All in all, over this past year, more than 2600 parishioners participated in these experiences. Thanks to everyone for your feedback and your eagerness to participate! Special thanks to the Adult Learning Pro-gram Board (ALP) members, who worked together with me to imple-ment these programs. Watch for future program announcements later this summer. In the meantime, may your days be blessed with peace, joy, and fun!

Summertime Blessings,

-Sr. Eileen Kazmierowicz

First Communion

Banks Every year, our First Communicants create a special bank at one of their Jesus Day classes in fall and are asked to personally contribute to that bank throughout the year. At their First Communion Masses, these banks are brought forward during the Offertory Procession. We try to teach the chil-dren that they, too, can put money in either the collection baskets at Mass or the Poor Boxes on our walls in Church.

This year the students brought forth $1,329.48. It shows that if each of the 66 students do a little bit, we can col-lect a good amount of money. This is how it works for the parish collection too. As it is a St. Alphonsus tradition, the money collected from the Commu-nicants will be donated to our St. Vin-cent de Paul Society this year. As the children have learned, this money is used to help families in need.

Question Of The Week Theme: Jesus gives us special gifts. Question for Youth: Jesus prayed for his disci-ples, that others might believe in him through their words. How are you spreading your belief in Jesus through your words and actions? Do others know who Jesus is by knowing you? Question for Adults: Jesus invites us to be one with God. Name a moment when you were one with God this past week.

The Ascension Of The Lord Where did he go? Many times when we think of those who have died, we imagine escape from this world to a purely spiritual place. Jesus' Ascension can leave us in a place of confusion. What happens to Jesus? And why does this matter to us?

The Ascension has been confirmed in the Creed for two millennia. In Jesus' Ascension, we're invited to consider our own ultimate end. Regardless of death's reality now, we believe in the resurrection of the body and the reunification of body and soul. One day, earth and heaven will meet perfectly and without end. We anticipate this "new heaven and a new earth" at every Mass and throughout the beauty, truth, and love of the Church and her members. Today, celebrate a foreshadowing of the fullness we all await!

World Communications Day

Communication And Mercy: A Fruitful Encounter Oftentimes we need to experience mercy, in order to pass it on. Moreover, mercy is just what our Holy Father wants us to experience, as we show the Father's mercy to others.

During this Year of Mercy, how might we show the Father's mercy in our mass media and com-munications industries? It is all about "encounter." The way we meet each other, as we drive out of the parking lot after Mass on a Sunday morning. We encounter our fellow parishioners, as they exit the parking lot. We just offered them the sign of peace during Mass. Do we show them mer-cy, as we encounter them by allowing them to go first? On the other hand, do we try to be the first out and cut people off?

We encounter Jesus in the Mass, and in that encounter we are shown mercy; mercy in the recep-tion of Communion.

Perhaps we need to look around and see God's mercy that is so prevalent in our lives, shown and given to us so lavishly.

Feast On The Blacktop Is Coming Soon The dates are Friday, August 2, Saturday, August 3, and Sunday, August 4. On Friday, our bands are Branded and Rebel Grace; H2-O2 and Up All Night on Saturday, Vern Tretow and Random Maxx on Sunday. All are great listening and dancing bands. On Saturday, we will have our famous spaghetti dinner with profits to the Greendale Fire and Police Departments and a pancake break-fast on Sunday, with proceeds to the Greendale Marching Band's Rose Bowl Trip. All three days and nights will include games, food, drinks, and fun. Plan to come and be a part of St. Al's sun fun. Stay tuned for more updates weekly. Please plan to volunteer some of your time to making this event a success!!!! Call Chris at 414-529-3758, or Barb at 414-425-5514, for information and ques-tions.
