THE COLLECT OF THE DAYGod be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Grant, Almighty God, that we, who have been redeemed from the old life of sin by ourbaptism into the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ, may be renewed inyour Holy Spirit, and live in righteousness and true holiness; through Jesus Christ ourLord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.Amen.

FIRST READING Please be seated. Deuteronomy 6:4-9, 20-25

Hear, O Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. You shall love the LORD yourGod with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep thesewords that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to yourchildren and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, whenyou lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as anemblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and onyour gates.

When your children ask you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the decreesand the statutes and the ordinances that the LORD our God has commandedyou?’ then you shall say to your children, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, butthe LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. The LORD displayed beforeour eyes great and awesome signs and wonders against Egypt, against Pharaoh andall his household. He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give usthe land that he promised on oath to our ancestors. Then the LORD commanded usto observe all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our lasting good, so as tokeep us alive, as is now the case. If we diligently observe this entire commandmentbefore the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, we will be in the right.’

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowingfrom whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacredwritings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Allscripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may beproficient, equipped for every good work.

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim themessage; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time iscoming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and willturn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out yourministry fully.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will giveyou rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humblein heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burdenis light.”

Sanctus The Hymnal #S-124 Holy, holy, holy Lord

Title: The Holy Eucharist II, Holy, holy, holy Lord: Sanctus; Music: From New Plainsong; David Hurd (b. 1950).OneLicense.net License #A-709746.

Please stand or kneel.

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us inyour own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love.

You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forthyour bountiful grace.

But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not seeyour goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused oneanother, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared theway of salvation for all people.

Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered usfrom slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew yourpromise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, mademortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealedyour glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, openingthe way of freedom and life.

Page 17: Welcome to St. John’s Episcopal Church€¦ · 09/07/2016  · American deaconess in the Episcopal Church. The words of the service are from The Book of Common Prayer, Revised Common

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he hadgiven thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This ismy Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” B

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, hegave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drinkit, do this for the remembrance of me.” B

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
