SMDG (Ship Message Design Group) is a non-profit organization, run by and on behalf of companies and organizations working in the maritime

industry: container terminals, ocean carriers, software vendors and related organizations (UN/ECFEACT, DCSA, ITIGG, PROTECT,…).

SMDG develops, maintains and promotes the use of EDI messages and their best practices for the maritime industry.

The SMDG is recognized by the UN/EDIFACT Board as official Global User Group.

Since 1987 SMDG develops and promotes UN/EDIFACT EDI-messages for the Maritime

Industry and is an official Pan European User Group, recognised by the UN/CEFACT body

Message structures essential to the use of electronic commerce in the transport sector have

been agreed and approved by the relevant United Nations and local authorities, have been

implemented by various communities around the world over the past 20+ years.

SMDG documentation can be downloaded by any interested party free-of-charge from the SMDG website: www.smdg.org

The SMDG plenary meetings are held twice yearly in April and October. Interim meetings are held by the working groups via conference calls.

The Plenary nominates Chairmen and members for the workgroups. The chairmen will present results and proposals from their workgroup and request approval.

Then they will submit the change request (DMR) to UN/CEFACT.Also any topics of interest to members can be presented.

Guests are welcome, but no commercial interest shall be pursued.

Workgroups meet f2f during plenary sessions and interim via e-meeting

Plenary f2f meetings are held twice per year, hosted by different member companies

• Chairman • Secretary

Chairman and Secretary are preparing and organizing the Plenary meetings: Location, agenda, minutes, website.

They provide general guidelines for the SMDG.Provide SMDG representation are legal bodies and manage the budget.

UN/CEFACT maintains and publishes the official UN/Edifact directory. CEFACT Forum f2f meetings are held twice per year.

The UN/CEFACT Forum decides about change requests from authorized bodies, such as the SMDG, across all industries. They publish directory

updates twice per year. They maintain the UN/LOCODE directory.

of an Edifact Message Format

Page 11: Welcome to SMDG

• TPFREP (Terminal Performance Report)

Long wish list had piled up since last upgrade in 2011. It is fully covered now by the new version 4.1 which

was published in May 2021.

• IFTSAI Vessel Schedule

Enhancements for reporting from Barge operator to terminal, for reporting connecting vessels, for additional

cut-off dates etc. under development

• VGM and VERMAS

VERMAS was developed as a completely new message type in 2016, for reporting of Verified Gross Mass as

per IMO / SOLAS convention. It has become the world standard in short time. No enhancement request were

tabled that would justify a new version.

• IFTMBF for exchange of DG bookings between shipping lines

SMDG has assumed responsibility for this special variant of the IFTMBF and published the MIG on our

website.

Recent standardisation projects

Page 12: Welcome to SMDG

In the pipeline

• MOVINS (Stowage Move Instruction)

Major redesign, in line with the new BAPLIE 3.1 - MOVINS and BAPLIE go hand in hand in the stowage planning

process

• TANSTA (Tank Status Message)

Redesign is required by shipping lines and software vendors.

• Repair Estimate

from the container repair shop to the container operator.

Redesign of the DESTIM and WESTIM messages.

• ConRo vessels

Support the special data transmission needs regarding vessels for both RoRo and Containers to be loaded.

SMDG Code lists 1/2

The code lists are maintained and published by the SMDG and are widely recognized

SMDG Liner codes = vessel operator codes

SMDG Terminal codes = more detailed level thanport UN/LOCODE. Recognized as«child code list» under the UN/LOCODE.Also available via the API provided by the BIC.

Page 14: Welcome to SMDG

SMDG Code lists 2/2

The code lists are maintained and published by the SMDG and are widely recognized

SMDG Handling codes = Terminal handlinginstruction or Stowage instruction

SMDG Delay Reasoncodes = Delays in vessel schedule or in terminal operation

Page 15: Welcome to SMDG

The Recommendations for standardization requirements that are not otherwise

covered are widely recognized. Examples:

1. Tier numbering = How to define stow positions for vessels with more than 9 tiers on deck

that are not covered by ISO 9711

2. Containers with non-ISO ID = How to handle a container number without alpha-prefix

6. Best practices - use of message formats for standard business use cases between a carrier and a terminal

New recommendation under development:

8. Empty tankcontainer with residue – reporting in Edifact message
