Philosophy of Instruction for Physics C

You are the big kids. You have all had physics before. Your motivations for being in this course

vary. Your skill and interest level in different areas

of physics vary. I will try to avoid repetition of what you

already know, and will occasionally give you at least some choice as to what you work on.3

Scientific Notation i.e. 4.32 x 105 kg

Scientific notation is a system for communicating very small and very large numbers. For numbers in the range .001 – 1000, most scientists don’t bother. But for numbers larger or smaller than this, it is very useful, and will be a big part of this course. 2 Rules:

Rule #1: all stem numbers must be between 1 -10

Rule #2: numbers larger than 10 use positive exponents; numbers smaller than 1 use negative exponents.

For your calculator the number 4.3 x 104 is written 4.3EE4, 4.3 EXP4. Likewise when your calculator writes 2.1EE-7 as an answer, it means 2.1 x 10-7, or .00000021. For example,

• Algebra is the most necessary skill for this class. Without a thorough knowledge of algebra you will not be an effective problem solver.

• If you are rusty on your algebra skills; allow me to simplify.

• Rule #1: Any operation carried out on one side of an equation

MUST be carried out exactly the same to the other side.

• Rule #2: When a fraction has the same multipliers on the top and bottom of a fraction, these cancel out.
