Jubilee Year of MercyNovember 20, 2016Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the UniverseJubilee Year Ends
Today Luke, evangelist and by tradition artist, sends us forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy with an unfor-gettable portrait of Christ the King. The setting for Jesus’ “royal portrait” is the cross. From this “throne,” the crucified “crown prince” welcomes by “executive pardon” the kingdom of mercy’s first citizen, a fellow criminal. The “Good Thief” requests neither deliverance nor salvation, or even forgiveness: “Remember me when...” (Luke 23:42). “Today you will be with me,” King Jesus promises, “in paradise.” (23:43). Paradise, even for non-believers, is an
image of creation contentedly in harmony with self, fellow crea-tures, and Creator. Today, we “good thieves” beg Jesus to remember us. We promise to remember that, although Jesus’ kingdom will be fulfilled only when Jesus’ returns, that kingdom begins today in the paradise that will flower from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been embraced unconditionally and undeserv-edly by Jesus’ mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others, unconditionally, with that same unfailing mercy.

Dear parishioners,For the Sundays remaining until the celebration of Our Savior’s
birth at Christmas, I will reprint an essay written in 1885. I will edit the essay to shorten its length while preserving the most essential parts. It is entitled “Our Sweetest Remembrance and Our Brightest Hope.” It is a reflection upon our first Holy Communion, our sweet-est remembrance and our last Holy Communion, our brightest hope. The essay will be presented in five parts following one another from beginning to end. I pray that you will truly enjoy this masterwork of spiritual writing and that it will prepare your heart to receive Holy Communion at Christmas with renewed fervor and love.
I. Our Sweetest Remembrance and Our Brightest HopeThe traveler who climbs a steep mountain often stops in the
midst of the ascent, and casting his eyes now over the distance he has gained, and now over that which yet remain to be traveled, loves to reflect on the impressions received and on those which yet await.
Already, he has doubtless been much fatigued. His feet have been bruised by the stones and his garments have been torn by the thorns on the way. But, what agreeable remembrances he has gathered! As he ascended, the sky grew more serene, the landscape stretched out before his eye with more loveliness and variety; and if anything, more particularly struck him, a greener meadow, a more limpid stream, it is this picture he keeps most preciously in his memory and loves most to recall. Without a doubt weariness, will increase and new difficulties await. But, if he is certain of finding at the summit a more glorious view and the repose that he desires, he loves to dwell on it in advance. He starts forward with new courage, animated at once by the remembrance of the past and the hope of the future.
We may say it is thus with ourselves, when in the course of our life, we stop and by reflection at the point we have attained, we cast our eyes successfully on the days gone by and those stretched out before us…
Father David.
Padre David.

The members are parishioners with a background in law enforcement, firefighting, safety, security, and risk management. At a recent meeting, the members proposed parking lot safety guidelines, which will help to promote safety on the premises.• Do not leave car phones, handbags or any valuable item where they can
be seen in your vehicle. Always store these items away from sight.• Do not leave purchased merchandise in your vehicle where it can be
seen.• Before sunrise and sunset, park and walk in well lighted areas. Please
consider that for the evening Mass on Saturday and Sunday, you will exit the church when it is dark outside.
• Stay alert to your surroundings, including people who are walking to their vehicles and to the movement of traffic.
• Before getting into your vehicle look inside and around.• Remember to pray before you begin a journey. My holy guardian angel, ask the Lord to bless the journey which I under-take, that it may profit the health of my soul and body; that I may reach its end; and that, returning safe and sound, I may find all at home in good health. Guard, guide and preserve us. Amen.
