Jan. 30-31Fourth Sunday of Ordinary TimeConsidering the decadence of this contempo-rary age in secular society, there is a critical need to stand up for what is right and just. We are reminded by Jeremiah that taking the hard right, as opposed to the easy wrong, is the correct moral and ethical choice. As long as we stand on the promises of Christ, God will provide us the fortitude and strength to speak the truth.

FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Fasting regulationsOne of the most ancient practices linked to the season of Lent is fasting. Fasting is not only a discipline of self-control; but it also serves as an aid to prayer. Just as our bodies hunger for physical food, so too, do our souls hunger for God. By fasting we signify our oneness with the Lord, acknowledge our need for conversion, and give witness to our solidarity with those less fortunate. Traditionally, the canonical obligation of fasting has been understood in the church as the taking of only one full meal a day. These traditions of fasting and abstinence are an expression of our desire to be converted in our hearts, to be reconciled with each other, and to love our neighbor.

The U.S. Catholic bishops call for all Catholics 14 years and older to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays of Lent. Abstinence forbids the consumption of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat.

Catholics who are 18 to 59 years old are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting refers to the quantity of food eaten. Traditionally, fasting calls for refraining from eating between meals and consuming only one full meal per day. Some food which will not equal another full meal is permitted.

“This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own.” (Is 58:6-7)

Other forms of penance that we are encouraged to observe during Lent include:

• Prayer: In prayer, we encounter and walk with God. Opportunities for prayer can include attending Mass, praying the liturgy of the hours, praying within the family, visiting a chapel, prayerfully reading the Bible, praying the rosary or praying before the Blessed Sacrament.

• Almsgiving: This penitential practice entails giving money or other resources for the benefit of those in need. One possible source of this money is that which has been saved from fasting or other means of self-denial. In our diocese, we are encouraged to give alms to the Ashes to Easter project, which benefits missionaries from our diocese.

Ayuno y Abstinencia

(Is 58:6-7)

SANTA CRUZ CATHOLIC SCHOOL/ESCUELA CATOLICA

News from the Principal’s DeskThis week is the 42nd Annual National Catholic Schools Week.

Santa Cruz Catholic School will be celebrating all week long with special daily activities: Super Student Day, Donuts with Dads, Muffins with Moms, Goodies with Grandparents, and Teacher Appreciation Day. The students have been working hard on different topics about America’s History which they will present to their parents on Thurs-day night, followed by a Family Potluck Dinner. We also begin the week with the Student Talent Show on Monday afternoon. All in all, it will be a busy week filled with great things.

This past Friday, we had fifty-two students attend the School Choice Rally on the grounds of the Capitol. After that, the students, their teachers, and their chaperones attended noon Mass at the Ca-thedral. The students were very excited to be walking through one of the blessed Holy Doors of Mercy designated within the Austin Diocese. After Mass, the entire group enjoyed an outdoor picnic on Capitol grounds.

Have a blessed week,Mrs. Flanagan

The Mystical Rose Rosary Makers wel-comes all to join the rosary makers group. Making rosaries is an excellent way to help our missionaries to teach others how to love Jesus. The group will have its next meeting on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 2 PM in the Knight of Columbus Room in Dean Hall.

For additional information, call Middy Munoz at 512-312-9940, or Sandy Dodson at 512-213-4554; or Dolores Montemayor at 512-280-3625.”

Eagle’s Wings Retreat Center Presents a Retreat just in time for Lent:February 16: Meditating on the Mystery of Jesus’ Passion and Death on the Cross

Peering from behind the scenes of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion” to Ronald Rolheiser’s reflections on the mystery of Jesus’ Passion and Cross, we come face to face with questions like what is the wisdom inside the Cross of Jesus? - How does our brokenness connect with the brokenness of the one who died on the cross? - How does carrying our own cross help those around us? - What are we saying to ourselves and others when we wear crosses around our necks or display them in our homes? - How do we accept the challenge to make the death of Jesus on the cross an example to follow in our own lives? (Based on Ronald Rolheiser’s book: “The Passion and the Cross”). Come and join as we dive deeply into this mystery.
