THE 2017-2018 SEASONCONCERTS AT THE SMITH CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

“WELCOME TO OUR 19TH SEASON!

Las Vegas has always been known as one

of the entertainment capitals of the world

and over the course of the season, we will

be celebrating that by showcasing some of

the local talent right in our own backyard.

We continue to perform great works we all

know and love, masterpieces never before

played here, as well as explore new and

exciting music. As always, expect the

unexpected!”

– MUSIC DIRECTOR

OPENING NIGHT ON OUR 19TH SEASON features one of the greatest symphonic blockbusters of all time, music from an American icon to mark his 70th birthday and a concerto performed by an award-winning pianist who calls Las Vegas home. Richard Strauss, a versatile artist with a library of work spanning tone poems, opera and concerti, was deeply rooted in the Romantic Era, the artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th Century. His more mature voice emerged with the tone poem Don Juan, which premiered in 1889 and conveys the story of the legendary lothario. John Adams is one of the best known and most often performed of American composers. His Common Tones in Simple Time premiered in 1979 and this will be the orchestra’s first performance of this work, which was composed to create the sense of soaring above landscapes, evoking emotion and excitement. We conclude the celebratory night with Johannes Brahms’s first Piano Concerto and soloist Mykola Suk, internationally recognized pianist and Las Vegan. Brahms, considered one of three prolific “B’s” of German composers (in the company of Bach and Beethoven) wrote solo piano music often described as rapturous.

WE SHOWCASE IMPORTANT WORKS from three masters in this striking program that combines some of the most prolific composers rooted in Austro-German Romanticism. Coriolan Overture, written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1807 for a play by the same title, is a fictional depiction of a General invading Rome. Honoring the story, the music aptly expresses a need to conquer, then yields to tenderness, finally revealing tragedy and remorse. Our Clarinetist, Cory Tiffin, steps into the spotlight with Mozart’s singular Clarinet Concerto, which was written in 1791 just two months before the composer’s death. The concerto is notable for its delicate interplay between soloist and orchestra. Tiffin remarks, “Entire books have been written about style, interpretation, and the history behind this work, but to prepare for a performance is a daunting and engrossing task; the sort of charge that wholly feeds the obsessive side of a musician for many weeks – hours and hours of practice, study, research, and meditation are required.” Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 1, nicknamed “the saucy maid” by the composer, provides further opportunity for the orchestra and audience to explore Bruckner’s unique and phenomenal symphonies. Although this is his first symphony, Bruckner wrote it at the age of 44 and it was well-received when he conducted the premiere in Vienna in 1868.

YOUR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTS Copland in Mexico, funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the “Music Unwound” initiative, which will feature performances, lectures, recitals, exhibitions, and similar events in collaboration with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and other community partners. The works of American composer Aaron Copland and Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas honor the culture, people and the undeterred spirit of Mexico and the American Southwest. Copland is referred to as “the Dean of American Composers.” Copland’s ballet score Rodeo, a tale of a ranch wedding is one of his many enduring works. Hoe-Down, the ballet’s finale, is one of the most well-known compositions by any American composer, used frequently in movies and television. Revueltas was a noted composer, musician and conductor. His Homenaje a Federico García Lorca expresses outrage that he and many other intellectuals and artists of the era felt about the murder of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca at the hands of the fascist militia. Redes, his first film score, concerns the efforts of exploited fishermen to unite and will be shown with the orchestra performing this powerful score. Punctuating the evening is Copland’s El Salón México, a musical depiction of a raucous dance hall in Mexico City.

L AS VEGAS PHILHARMONICʼS TRADIT IONAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION returns with all the wonder and magic of the season. This festive, family-friendly concert begins with Leroy Anderson’s nostalgic and popular A Christmas Festival, setting spirits alight. The merriment continues with selections from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker. Sergei Prokofiev’s timeless classic, Peter and the Wolf opens the second half with Clint Holmes narrating the elaborate tale. Johann Strauss’s celebratory Radetzky March invites the audience to clap along. The spirited performance concludes with a traditional audience sing-along of holiday favorites accompanied by your symphony orchestra.

WE USHER IN THE SEASON with music from the Baroque era. Francesco Manfredini’s Christmas Concerto opens the program, setting the seasonal mood. An Italian composer, violinist and church musician, he demonstrated a gift for easy melodic invention. Dieterich Buxtehude was a Danish-German organist whose works are frequently performed in church services. Das neugeborne Kindelein (newborn infant child), taken from a collection of sacred poetry circa 1558, celebrates the newborn Jesus and the coming of a new church. Arcangelo Corelli’s Christmas Concerto was published in 1714 and bears the inscription Fatto per la notte di Natale (made for the night of Christmas). It is one of the most often performed pieces of classical music ever composed for the holiday season. We conclude the musical feast with our Chorus-In-Residence, the Las Vegas Master Singers, joining the orchestra for Part One of George Frideric Handel’s uplifting and transcendent Messiah, a hallmark of holiday choral works.

SPOTLIGHTING THE VIRTUOSITY of our esteemed musicians serves as inspiration for this program featuring pieces selected by members of your symphony orchestra.

Harpist Kimberly Glennie shines on Claude Debussy’s Danses sacrée et profane, which was premiered in 1904 and she says of the piece, “These dances transport me to a mythical time and place. I love this piece because it gives voice to the magic and enchantment of the harp.”

Oboist Stephen Caplan demonstrates his command of his instrument in Vaughan Williams’s Oboe Concerto composed in 1943. Caplan enthuses, “This piece is one of my favorite works to play. It’s the composer’s highly personal response to World War II--beautiful, nostalgic, and intensely moving.”

Cellist Andrew Smith solos on C.P.E. Bach’s Cello Concerto in A Major and shares, “The charming Cello Concerto in A Major, though rarely programmed, is worthy of having its place in the standard repertory. The second movement, marked “mesto” (sad), is especially notable.”

Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis ends the evening of music chosen by our gifted group of musicians. Featuring a rising, organ-like melody used to create somber effect, the piece was used in the 2003 film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

TWILIGHTʼS MAGICAL PROPERTIES and marking of time resonate in this musical feast. Las Vegas resident and renowned composer Michael Torke’s work returns with Sylvan. The piece, inspired by his summers spent in the Adirondacks harkens to the sites, smells and sounds forever imprinted on his memory. Comprised of three movements named in homage to the Eastern White Pine, Yellow Birch, and Red Spruce trees, he was intrigued by the notion that each of the three trees have their own distinct music. Alexi Kenney, who captivated all during a guest appearance in our 2015 -16 season, is back to perform Robert Schumann’s only Violin Concerto. Considered a significant composition from the twilight of his career, the concerto was written for acclaimed violinist, Joseph Joachim, and the finale is influenced in part by Schumann’s acquaintance with a young Johannes Brahms. The work remained unknown to most for nearly 80 years. “Of the many great concerti available to violinists, Schumann’s is an unjustly neglected jewel. Its intimate lyricism remains even in the most virtuosic passages, and its middle movement is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful pieces I can think of. I’m so excited to be bringing this wonderful work to life in Las Vegas,” expresses Kenney. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, part of the composer’s late symphonic output closes the performance. His contemporaries considered it one of his more inspirational symphonies and Beethoven agreed, stating it was one of his greatest works.

STORYTELLING THROUGH DYNAMIC MUSIC FOR ORCHESTRA and choir complemented by dance comes to the fore in this vivid program beginning with Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber, written by German composer Paul Hindemith in America in 1943 with the virtuosity of American symphony orchestras in mind. The second half of the evening welcomes the Las Vegas Master Singers, our Chorus-In-Residence, as well as the UNLV Concert Singers and Chamber Chorale to the stage for Carl Orff’s towering and beloved cantata Carmina Burana. Members of the UNLV Department of Dance will perform original choreography. The piece, composed in the early 20th Century and based on 24 poems from the original medieval collection of the same name, explores a wide range of topics, as familiar in the 13th Century as they are today: the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the ephemeral nature of life, the joy of the return of Spring, and the pleasures and perils of drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust.

IN HONOR OF internationally beloved American Composer Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday and to mark the second year of our American German Cultural Exchange Fellowship, we present an evening that begins with Bernstein’s Fancy Free Variations from the ballet about three sailors on shore-leave in New York City, which premiered to instant popularity in 1944. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, nicknamed “Emperor,” is one of his most famous and the final piano concerto he wrote. A colossal work, it amplifies the virtuosity demanded of the player. Rising star Danae Dörken, one of the most sought-after soloists of her generation, will captivate with her breathtaking technique, profound musicality, and color-rich sound as part of our American German Cultural Exchange Fellowship, which promotes cultural unity through music. “Full of grandeur and overwhelming power, this concerto feels like a true force of nature,” reveals Dörken. After catching our breath from Germany’s “poet at the piano,” we launch into Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, written in Soviet Russia in the span of one month in 1944 at the height of WWII. He intended it to be a hymn to the free and happy man. It is a powerhouse symphony, which utilizes the full panoply of colors and textures of the orchestra in quintessential Russian style to convey the complete spectrum of the human condition.

Subscriber Benefits & More

The mission of the Las Vegas Philharmonic is to perform music that enriches and educates, helping to build a vibrant, culturally rich community.

Central to our mission is the annual Youth Concert Series. This specially curated program engages children in the many proven benefits of classical music and often features the winner(s) of our annual Cox Communications Young Artists’ Concerto Competition, affording the attending students the opportunity to see peers on stage playing with the orchestra.

Every year, the Philharmonic welcomes thousands of Clark County School District students (the vast majority coming from Title I/At-Risk schools) for our Youth Concert Series in Reynolds Hall. More than 200,000 students have been impacted by this important classical music experience since our inception 19 seasons ago. Many of these children are experiencing live classical music for the first time. The series is offered free-of-charge to the schools, with costs underwritten by the Philharmonic’s generous corporate and individual donors and grants. We want to expand this program to increase the annual capacity from 19,000 to 32,000 students over the next three years.

Our invitation to you - with your donation of $150 or more, you and a guest will be invited to attend one of these private performances; witnessing the impact this program can have on young lives.
