Reading Comprehension
One focus this year will be on talking about literature, not just telling what happened in the
story. You can work on this at home by discussing:
• What the author’s message is (the “moral” of the story)• What the story reminds you of from your life, connected to the author’s
message (if the author’s message is about having patience, then your connection should be about patience)
• Why the characters have made the choices that they made, and what kinds of choices you would make in that situation
• Why the author chose the words, sentences, and structures that they did to tell the story
• Think about this: when you are in a book club, do you sit and retell the events, or do you talk about your opinions, reactions, feelings and author’s writing?

Homework Helpful Hints
Help set up a consistent organized place for your homework to be done
Help your child establish a consistent schedule for completing homework
Encourage, motivate, and prompt your child, but do not sit with them and do the homework for them
If your child is practicing a skill, ask them to tell you which steps are easy for them, which are difficult, or how he is going to improve. If
your child is consistently unable to talk about the knowledge they are practicing or using, please contact your teacher
WCPSS has set up a homework schedule that should be followed based on the grade of your child. When bedtime comes, please stop your child, even if they are not done. It can be completed the next
night. If your child is having difficulty with a skill and becoming frustrated and it is taking a long time please attach a note to the assignment
informing me of this so I can reinforce this skill at school.
