Four Year Colleges and Universities
Apply Texas- www.applytexas.org One application you can send to Texas Public
Colleges. If applying to more than one select private
school, complete the Common Application (www.commonapp.org). Can be used for several colleges, but read fine print concerning essays and supplements.
Please take your time on the application
College or Trade/Technology School? Technology Schools (Auto tech, Welding, Cosmetology
schools/Culinary Arts programs- Can be completed usually within 2 years.
Colleges typically 4 years. RESEARCH by going on the INTERNET.Check the deadlines to apply! ***Some are as early as Dec. 1st.
CAREER EXPOThis Thursday October 29th in the LPHS Student Center from
5:30-7:30 p.m. Local Businesses, some colleges and industrial
businesses will be there to offer information about careers in their organizations/colleges.
Community & Junior Colleges Are “Open Admission”
Open Admission: These colleges accept all students that apply to that school.
IMPORTANT: All students must still qualify to take college level classes based on TSIA test scores.
San Jacinto College offers free TSIA study help. Please contact them for info.
You must complete the entire application process

at any college in the state of Texas unless you are exempt
This is a College Level Placement Exam Determines what college level courses you will take See Ms. Brunson to see what days the test will be
offered at LaPorte HS Can Take the TSI Test at San Jacinto College
Central Location-No appointment necessary Or take the test at the college you plan on attending Usually free the first time but will be charged for

TSIA EXEMPTION CRITERIA USED BY MOST TEXAS COLLEGES:

S.A.T. SCORES: 500+ IN BOTH THE MATH & CRITICAL READING AREAS WITH A COMBINED TOTAL OF 1070+
A.C.T. SCORES: 23+ TOTAL, 19+ IN BOTH THE MATH & ENGLISH

Uniform Admissions Policy Before you can be accepted in to a 4 year Public University in Texas
(even if you are in the top 10%) you must meet 1 of the following requirements:
Successfully complete the Recommended or Distinguished Plan * New HB5 Graduation Plan/Check with the college, most are fine with it if student has Chemistry & Physics.
OR SAT Score of: 1500 out of 2400 (CR+W+M)
OR ACT Score of: 18 English, 21 Reading, 22 Math, 24 Science
OR Submit the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Exemption

Students in the Top 10% of their graduating class get automatic admission to Texas public universities.

SAT/ACT Scores (sent directly by the testing institution)
Official High School Transcript (Request one in registrar’s office) Fill out a transcript request form at
the end of the year to send a final transcript.
Application Fee can be $60 each (Fee waiver available to those on free/reduced lunch who used an SAT/ACT fee waiver)
Include any necessary essay(s) or optional resume/letter of recommendations
Transcripts You must submit an official transcript to any
college you apply to. Some scholarships also require transcripts. Complete a “Transcript Request Form” with
the registrar, Julia Carter. Keep a copy for yourself IMPORTANT!
Fill out a request to have a final transcript sent to the Technical School/College/University that you decide to go to.
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
*Someone who knows you well
*Give that person 2-weeks advance notice. Do not wait until it’s almost due to ask someone for a recommendation. Your lack of planning does not create an emergency on their end.
*Complete a Counselor Recommendation Form

SENIORS MAY HAVE TWO COLLEGE VISITATION DAYS EACH YEAR.
MUST BRING the “College Visit Form” GIVING THE DATE OF VISIT TO THE ATTENDANCE CLERK ON THE DAY YOU RETURN and
Must have signature, name & phone number to college representative that gave you a tour.
College Night Date: Tuesday, NOVEMBER 17th Location: Deer Park HS -South Time: 6:30-8:00 p.m. Over 100 college reps will be there.

This will take hours to research and time to complete the information (most likely essays).

Who are Scholarships for? Not just for the student who is the star athlete. Not just for the top academic students. Scholarships are available for a lot of reasons. SOME EXAMPLES: How tall/short you are Hispanic, Indian, African American, etc. Student who is a twin or multiple Student with a disability or parent with a disability Hardship in life that you can explain Certain career field student is interested in GO ON THE INTERNET AND RESEARCH-LOOK AT
