What is the Early Years Foundation Stage? • The Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S.) is the stage

of education for children from birth to the end of the Reception year.

• It is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning.

• Learning for young children should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience in which they explore, investigate, discover, create, practise, rehearse, repeat, revise and consolidate their developing knowledge, skills and understanding and attitudes.

The E.Y.F.S. is based on 4 themes. • 1 A Unique Child

• 2 Positive Relationships

• 3 Enabling Environments

• 4 Learning and Development

The 7 areas of learning.•Prime Areas

•Personal, social & emotional development

•Communication & language• Physical development• All areas of learning and development are important and

inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

Teaching in Foundation Stage• Teaching in the Foundation Stage is taught through a

combination of Child Initiated and Teacher Directed Activities .

• Child Initiated Activities • This the time when children can select any activity and

have opportunity to develop their learning in their play.• The role of any adult working with the children is to

support and extend their learning.• Our role is to be observers ,co-players

(modelling ,playing alongside, offering suggestions) and extenders (discussing ideas ,asking open questions, offering challenges and introducing new resources)

Page 16: Welcome to Ightham Primary School Mr Sherhod – Head Teacher

Teaching in Foundation Stage• Teacher directed Activities • Teacher planned activities that take the children's learning

forward in all 7 Areas of Learning .• Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds

and letters and to begin to read and write. • Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to

develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition .

• These activities are still “Hands on, brains on”• Learning is inside and outside. We weekly use the woodlands . • These activities develop communication, literacy and numeracy

skills which will prepare children for Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum
