In the summer of 2019, 22 BYU students, along with faculty and clinicians, traveled to Samoa to help screen children for rheumatic heart disease, a deadly condition prevalent in Samoa. The group visited 24 schools and screened 6,288 children. Senior All-American Clayton Young won the men’s 10,000 meter at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. For the first time as president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Russell M. Nelson spoke in a devotional address at BYU in 2019.

World Languages at BYURanked No. 3 for the most bachelor degrees in a foreign language, BYU teaches twice as many advanced classes as lower division classes. Approximately 65 percent of BYU students speak a second language, with 131 languages spoken on campus. Of those students who have served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 45 percent learned a language during their service and many achieve advanced proficiency.

Current language offerings include:

• 63 different languages ranging from Arabic to Welsh

• Competency-based language certificates in 15 languages

• Foreign language student housing in 10 languages

• Translation and localization courses

• Graduate courses in language, literature, and second language teaching
