Dear CVES Parents and Guardians,

The mission of the Alabaster City Schools is to partner with families and the community to inspire and

prepare graduates to be responsible and productive champions of their future.

Welcome to Creek View Elementary School! We are incredibly excited to begin the 2019-2020 school

year. We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can reach

their highest potential. Our teachers and staff have spent much of the summer planning for the new

school year and we welcome you!

CONTINUOUS SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT

Focusing on Student Performance

Creek View Elementary is accredited by AdvancED, the “unified organization of the North Central Association

Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), Southern Association of Colleges and

Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), and Commission on International

and Transregional Accreditation (CITA). AdvancED is dedicated to advancing excellence in education

worldwide through accreditation, research, and professional services.

“AdvancED creates the world’s largest education community, representing 27,000 public and private schools

and districts across the United States and 65 countries worldwide and education 15 million students…NCA

CASI, SACS CASI, and CITA schools share a unified, clear and powerful accreditation process designed to

help schools continuously improve (This information is quoted from the AdvancED web site, www.advanc-

ed.org).”

AdvancED accreditation means that we have met their standards and are continuously involved in improving

our school by using a comprehensive, research-based, data-driven process. The focus of the process is on

improving student learning. All teachers serve on at least one school improvement committee. All teachers are

responsible for implementing the Continuous School Improvement Plan.

Page 10: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

10

In September 2015, the Alabaster City School System had an Advance Accreditation visit for current

recommendations and requirements to continue accreditation.

On an annual basis, we review, revise and implement Continuous School Improvement Action Plans. 2019-

2020 Instructional Action Plans will be developed early in the school year. They will be based on 2018-2019

learning results from a variety of sources, including standardized data as well as local school data, school needs

and so on.

In addition to Instructional Action Plans, our School Improvement Plan also includes the following Action

Plans:

❑ School Safety ❑ School Leadership Team/Professional Development ❑ At Risk/ESL/Counseling ❑ Technology ❑ Health/Wellness ❑ Marketing/Hospitality & Parenting/Title 1 ❑ Math ❑ Reading/Writing ❑ Science ❑ Special Education Team & Health and Wellness ❑ STEAM

their classrooms.

Breakfast is served from 7:00 – 7:40 a.m. Students who plan to eat breakfast at school should

report to the Cafeteria immediately. When finished, they will be dismissed to their designated area.

Students who do not eat breakfast should report to their designated area as soon as they arrive at

school.

I. ADMISSION

By law, certain conditions must be met before a student is admitted to an Alabaster City School.

1. A student whose custodial parent or guardian resides in the Alabaster City School district, who is

five years of age on or before September 2, and has not reached the age of 21 on or before

September 2, of the current school year is entitled to admission to an Alabaster City School.

2. A student entering school for the first time must present a birth certificate, immunization

record, social security card (optional), and proof of residence at the time of registration.

3. A certificate of measles immunization ADPH-F-IMM90 is required for all students attending

Kindergarten and Sixth Grade.

4. A child who is five years of age on or before September 1 or the date on which school begins in the

enrolling district shall be entitled to admission to the local public school Kindergarten at eh opening

of such schools for that school year or as soon as practicable thereafter.

5. A child who is six years of age on or before December 31 or the date on which school begins in the

enrolling district shall be entitled to admission to the first grade.

a. PROOF OF RESIDENCE AND TRANSFERS

Any student enrolled in school who does not reside in that school attendance zone must have an

approved transfer. All transfers are granted for one year only and without transportation being

provided. Information concerning out-of-zone attendance may be directed to Dorann Tanner,

Page 12: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

12

Coordinator of Student Services, at the Alabaster City Board of Education, telephone number

663-8400.

b. PROMOTION GUIDELINES

Promotion/Retention Promotion means that one has successfully completed the grade’s work and is ready to move to

the next grade. In determining promotion, the following serve as guidelines:

● Attendance: Students who have 12 or more daily absences are in danger of being retained. ● Knowledge of skills: Students will show sufficient progress in the basic skills.

● Readiness.

Retaining a student is a serious decision. A comprehensive process is used to provide effective

intervention in order to avoid retention. If a teacher has concerns about possibly retaining a

student, the parents/guardians are informed no later than at the semester and a plan for

intervention is developed with them through PST. This plan is continually reviewed and

modified to best meet the child’s needs. Parents are frequently updated about their child’s

progress. If the plan of interventions does not result in satisfactory success, retention continues

to be considered, a Notice of Possible Retention is sent home with the third 9-weeks report

card. The final decision to retain a student will be made in May. Parent input into this decision

is strongly valued. Ultimately, it is the school’s responsibility to make that recommendation.

c. WITHDRAWALS

Parents planning to withdraw children from school should contact the school office at least one

day in advance of the withdrawal. Transfer and immunization forms may be picked up

at school the last day the child attends. Cumulative records will be sent upon request to

the receiving school. All payments for lost books, library books and lunch accounts

showing deficiencies must be cleared through the school office before withdrawal.

II. ATTENDANCE/ABSENCES

Research shows that school attendance is directly related to success in school. Alabama law requires

that all children between the ages of six and sixteen attend school. If any child fails to attend school

without legal excuse, that child and the person having custody of that child will be referred to the

juvenile court system (the Early Warning Program).

The Alabama State Department of Education has now provided clarification for schools and parents by

adopting a statewide definition for truancy. Any student absence for which a written excuse is not on

file at the student’s school is considered to be truant. For this reason, a parent/guardian must

provide a written explanation that states the cause of any and every absence of a student no later

than three school days following the student’s return to school. In the case of absences due to

medical/dental appointments, a written excuse from the physician/dentist is also required.

Throughout the course of the school year, should unexcused absences accumulate, the parent/guardian

will be required to attend an attendance conference with local school administrators and/or possibly

participate in the Early Warning program provided by the Shelby County Juvenile Court. Upon the

fifth (5) unexcused absence, a truancy referral will be made to the Early Warning Program. Should a

Page 13: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

13

student accrue as many as five (5) unexcused absences within a school year, that student would be

considered truant for the purpose of filing a petition against the student and/or parent with the Court.

After three (3) unexcused absences, the local school will conduct a pre-Early Warning Program referral

conference. Also, after five (5) unexcused absences the local school will issue another attendance letter

and a referral to Early Warning Court will take place. After seven (7) unexcused absences the local

school will issue an additional attendance letter. A student who has excessive absences may be retained

due to excessive absences. Absences beyond 12 (excluding a doctor’s excuse or a court excuse) must

be documented with a doctor’s excuse or a court excuse or permission of the principal. Parent-written

notes will not excuse time missed from school after any combination of absences coded 1X (parent

note for student illness), 4X (Principal’s permission/death in the immediate family), 6X (parent note)

or 7X (no note or explanation) has exceeded 12 or more. Once a student has accumulated 12 or more

absences (coded 1X, 4X, 6X and 7X), parent notes are not excused and a doctor’s excuse will be

required to explain any future absences through the end of the school year.

For questions about attendance our registrar’s name is: Deborah Homrich and her email address

[email protected]. Our assistant principal Mandy Wesson [email protected]

addresses attendance issues.

a. ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES– School Hours are 7:45 a.m.—3:00 p.m.

Regular daily attendance on the part of the student is essential if academic progress is to be made.

When a parent knows in advance that an absence is forthcoming, the parent shall ask permission

from the principal, in writing, at least one week prior to the absence.

The following are allowed excused absences under the Alabaster City Schools’ Code of Conduct:

1. Illness

2. Death in the immediate family

3. Inclement weather which would be dangerous to the life and health of the child

as determined by the principal.

4. Legal quarantine

5. Emergency conditions as determined by the principal

6. Prior permission of the principal and consent of the parent or legal guardian.

Out of town business trips are unexcused absences.

No emails, faxes or phone calls will be accepted. Parents must send a note in writing or a doctor’s

excuse within three (3) days of the child returning to school. Make sure all days absent are

included on the note. Parents should send a note for absences, if a student must check in and/or

check-out.

*If the student is absent for any excused reason as defined above, the student shall be allowed to

make up major assignments and other work missed during the time of absence. Arrangements for

making up work must be made by the parent or guardian within THREE DAYS after the student

returns to school from the excused absence. A note must be sent within 3 days upon returning to

school.

Page 14: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

14

*Pre-School and Kindergarten students are under the same attendance laws as the other

students.

*Administrators are the only local school personnel that can grant absences excused.

Arriving Late OR Checking Out Early: Tardy!

It is essential that your child is in school each day, all day. Arriving late or checking out early disrupts learning

for each and every child in the classroom and is unacceptable unless in an emergency. Please make every effort

to schedule appointments after school hours.

“Tardy” refers to any loss of instructional time during the regular school day. In the morning, students are

considered tardy if they are not in their classroom, ready to learn at 7:45 a.m.

The Alabaster City Schools’ Student Code of Conduct and Attendance indicates that tardies to school and

unexcused check-ins and check outs should not exceed 2 per month. Tardies will be closely monitored and

students with consistent tardies may be summoned to the Early Warning program. Students who check out

before 11:30 a.m. or check in after 11:15 a.m. will be considered absent for the entire day. Please see the

Alabaster City Schools’ Student Code of Conduct and Attendance for a more detailed explanation about tardies.

A parent/guardian signature is required for both a late arrival and an early check out. Should your child be

unable to be in his/her classroom at 7:45 a.m., a parent/guardian must accompany the child to the office to sign

the child into school. However, if your child is transported by buses provided by Alabaster City Schools and

arrive after 7:45 a.m., your child will not be counted tardy.

b. PERFECT ATTENDANCE Perfect Attendance: No absences, No check-ins, No check-outs, No tardies.

Exemplary Attendance: No more than two check-ins, check-outs, or tardies during the

school year.

III. ARRIVALS / DEPARTURES

Students should arrive on time for school each day. School begins at 7:45 am. Students need to be in

the classroom at this time and are considered tardy if they enter the classroom at 7:45 a.m.

Arrival time for students begins at 7:00 a.m. Do NOT drop your child off early and drive off.

Teachers are not on duty to supervise early students. Parents/guardians are required to come to the

office to complete and sign a Tardy/Early Departure Slip for students who arrive after the 7:45 bell.

STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CHECK THEMSELVES IN OR OUT OF SCHOOL. A

student must be in attendance one - half of the instructional day to be counted present. Students who

check in at school after 11:15 a.m. or who check out before 11:30 a.m. will be counted absent the

entire day. Late check-ins and early check-outs are counted against the attendance of students.

Excessive tardies or early check-outs will be a reason for concern.

Car riders are dismissed to front loading area at 2:55 pm. All car riders will have an assigned car rider

number. The front loading/unloading area is the only campus area where students are to be dropped

off or picked up. For the safety of all our students, please come only to the carpool lane to pick up the

students. Students riding in cars must be picked up only in the designated carpool lane. Children

leaving early or parents who choose to park in the parking lot must go into the office and check their

child out through the office. Special situations are addressed as needed. Parents may not pull a child

Page 15: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

15

from the carpool line without first going through the office. No one may park in the bus areas (or other

areas) and walk to get their child out of the carpool lines.

IV. BOOKBAGS

Book bags can be very useful in carrying items to and from school. Primary students will not have the

largest amount of books and materials that older students will have. Please keep this in mind when

buying book bags. Our students are small so make sure the book bag does not overwhelm them.

BOOKBAGS ON WHEELS ARE NOT PERMITTED AT CREEK VIEW. Young students get hurt

with them and can hurt other students.

V. COUNSELING PROGRAM

Creek View Elementary offers each child and family the services of a developmentally comprehensive

counseling program. Classroom sessions are held to help students understand themselves, make good

decisions, form friendships, and achieve their goals. Children may see the counselor individually or in

continuing small groups. The counseling program coordinates with the total school program to help

each child have the best possible educational experience. If you need help or have questions, please

call the school office at 205-685-6100 and request a counselor.

VI. CURRICULUM

We are committed to providing exemplary instruction that reflects research and recognized best

practice throughout our curriculum. We adhere to the Alabama Course of Study in each curricular

area, which is also reflected in the Alabaster City School curriculum and pacing guides for each grade

level. Parents can access these guides on the Alabaster City Schools’ web site (www.acsboe.org).

College and Career standards are also used to ensure student content is taught sequentially appropriate.

Reading/Language Arts All of the CVES teachers have been trained in the Alabama Reading

Initiative (ARI). This training provides a deep understanding about how children learn to read and

how teachers can most effectively instruct them in reading. ARI addresses the five building blocks of

reading, as defined by the National Reading Panel: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary

and comprehension. Our reading program uses a wide variety of resources which include: the

Harcourt reading series, the Primary Comprehension Toolkit and numerous other books and resources.

Our reading program provides a balanced approach to the language arts with a focus on developing

reading comprehension. It also promotes a balanced approach to decoding words including strategies

in phonics (letter-sound relationships), semantics (meaning) and syntax (structure). Whole word

strategies are also taught and practiced. Good readers use all of these approaches.

Writing is also an essential component of our language arts program. Creek View Elementary

teachers implement Writing Workshop, a process-conference approach to teaching all aspects of

writing, on a daily basis. This is a powerful approach to teaching writing and is considered to be the

best practice in writing instruction. In addition, our boys and girls write across the curriculum on a

daily basis. Language conventions, grammar and spelling strategies are taught within the context of

authentic writing.

An important literacy goal for us is for each child to read like a writer and write like a reader!

Handwriting Kindergarten through third grade students will meet standards focusing on handwriting

skills and expectations. This instruction is developmentally appropriate and helps our students develop

confidence and handwriting fluency. 2nd graders are introduced to cursive handwriting, connecting

letters into words and continue implementation of developmentally appropriate skills through 3rd

grade.

Mathematics All of our teachers have now been trained in the Investigations math program.

Although we are not an AMSTI (Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative)

school, this is the mathematics program used by AMSTI schools. This approach to teaching

mathematics is based on the work of Jean Piaget and reflects National Council of Teachers of

Mathematics (NCTM) standards as well as best practice instruction in mathematics. Internalizing

number sense and developing problem-solving skills and strategies are critical components of this

program. Students are actively engaged in mathematics learning through the use of manipulatives,

small group activities, math journaling and problem-solving.

Science/Social Studies Our teachers develop units or themes to teach the objectives outlined for

their grade level in the Alabama Course of Study for each respective content area. The District’s social

studies and science programs utilize Scott Foresman as a resource and science standards are what

direct our instruction. Teachers have completed year 2 of AMSTI Science training and use kits

provided to complete with the grade level pacing guide.

Special Subjects: Art, Music, Physical Education and Technology The Alabama Course of Study

identifies specific objectives in each of these areas. Our teachers provide varied instruction to help our

students achieve these objectives. Our school strongly supports learning in these areas because we

believe they positively contribute to educating the whole child.

Physical Education Every student receives 30 minutes of physical education instruction daily as

required by state law.

● All students should wear socks and tennis shoes for P.E. in order to be safe. ● Shorts worn under dresses allow our girls to participate in activities that they would otherwise

miss.

Guidance CVES provides a comprehensive counseling and guidance program for all our students.

We have two full-time guidance counselors who provide a planned, purposeful and sequential program

of activities. The program includes classroom instruction as well as a variety of small group

opportunities. Our guidance counselors work closely with parents, teachers, school administrators and

other professionals to enhance the total development of all students.

Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners Classroom teachers regularly modify instruction and

materials to meet the needs of diverse learners. In some cases, students qualify for additional services

in the areas of Special Education and/or Gifted Education. A comprehensive process is involved with

identification of these students. If you have questions about either program, please contact your

child’s teacher, the principal or the assistant principal.

STEAM Lab The STEAM Lab represents Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics;

students are able to explore learning in all academic areas using a hands-on approach. Lessons are used

from a comprehensive variety of learning experiences and materials are provided to support experiments

and exploration during instruction.

Computer Lab The Alabama Course of Study identifies specific technology standards to ensure

students have practice and understanding using technology in education. Students have scheduled time

in the computer lab with a computer lab aide and classroom teacher supporting computer usage.

VII. CUSTODY

In most cases, divorced parents continue to have equal rights, such as access to information, where

their children are concerned. If you have a court order that limits the rights of one parent in

matters such as custody or visitation, please bring a complete copy to the office. Unless your

court order is signed by a judge and has the stamp of the court on file with us, we will provide equal

rights of visitation within the school setting to both parents.

VIII. DISCIPLINE

Our school supports and enforces the rules and guidelines outlined in the Alabaster City Schools Code

of Conduct and Attendance. Further, the Creek View Elementary administration supports the

management techniques used by the classroom teacher. When an exception arises, the teacher is

encouraged to contact the parents and/or the administration for assistance. Parental support will insure

that the learning atmosphere can be maintained at school. Close, open communication between the

parent, teacher and administrator, when needed, will result in the best outcome for everyone involved.

Having high expectations is a characteristic of effective schools. At Creek View Elementary School,

we have high expectations for ourselves and for our students. Therefore, compliance with school rules

is expected.

The following SCHOOL RULES are to be followed by all students in the classroom, cafeteria, hallways,

playground and restrooms:

● I will respect myself. ● I will respect others. ● I will accept responsibility for my actions. ● I will do my best.

Teachers may have additional rules for their classrooms.

Please see this year’s edition of the Alabaster City Schools Student Code of Conduct and Attendance

for a comprehensive list of violations and corresponding disciplinary actions. Offenses justifying a trip

to the principal/assistant principal’s office include but are not limited to: ● Disrespect shown to school personnel/striking a Board employee ● Inappropriate language or profanity (including threats to harm) ● Obscene gestures (including gestures suggesting violence or intent to harm) ● School/Bus vandalism ● Theft ● Fighting ● Assault/physical aggression ● Bullying

Students will be disciplined for not following rules and committing any of the offenses mentioned.

When they are sent to the office for discipline, the administration views these incidents as

opportunities to teach and reinforce appropriate skills. Options that will be considered are: ● Corrective teaching

Page 18: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

18

● Teaching the needed social skill ● Time out ● Isolation in the classroom or in another classroom ● Loss of privilege ● Parental note ● Parental phone call ● Work detail (age appropriate) ● In-school detention/supervised isolation ● Out-of-school suspension ● Early Warning Court Conduct Referral at 2 Out of School Suspensions

When students are sent to administration because they have violated the Code of Conduct, parents are

contacted and a Report of Student Disciplinary Action is sent home. The report should be signed and

returned the following day.

Individual teachers implement classroom discipline plans that include both rewards and consequences.

When classroom discipline issues occur that do not warrant administrative involvement, teachers

contact parents as soon as possible. If a discipline note is sent home, we ask that the parent/guardian

sign and return the notice the following school day.

We believe that regular communication between parents/guardians and the teacher helps diminish any

problems that may occur, whether they are academic or behavioral. We urge parents and teachers to

take a proactive approach in developing and maintaining open communication.

a. DISCIPLINE: BUS

Riding the school bus to and from school is a privilege, not a right. Students who misbehave

on the bus create a safety hazard for everyone. If a student is cited for an infraction that

might jeopardize the safety and well-being of all students, the bus driver will complete a bus

discipline form and the parent will receive a copy, which will be given to the student to share

with the parent/guardian. Bus drivers contact parents if a behavior issue arises.

The following progression of consequences will occur as bus discipline forms accumulate:

1 discipline form – student conference with the assistant principal and/or bus drivers

2 discipline forms – assistant principal will call the parent

3 discipline forms – suspension off the bus for 1 day

4 discipline forms – suspension off the bus for 3 days

5 or more discipline forms – off the bus for 5 days or indefinitely, depending on the

discipline problem.

Behavior concerns that are a risk of safety to student(s) or others can result in immediate suspension without the progression steps.

IX. DISCRIMINATION

Alabaster City Schools does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, religion, national origin,

handicap, color, or creed.

X. DRESS CODE

Please refer to the Alabaster City Schools Code of Conduct and Attendance for this information. In

particular, flip flops are not allowed at school for safety reasons.

Students are required to be neat, clean, and fully clothed at all times. Teachers and administrators

will refer students to parents when clothing, jewelry, or grooming is questionable. Students who

have questionable or inappropriate dress will not be allowed to attend class and parents will be

contacted. The following will serve as a general guide to acceptable dress for Creek View Elementary

students. See the Alabaster City Schools Student Code of Conduct book for the complete policy.

XI. E-MAIL POLICY E-mail will not be a means used to discuss individual student academics, behaviors, or study skills between

teachers and parents. These important matters should be discussed in scheduled parent-teacher

conferences, or if not possible, in a scheduled telephone conference. Classroom instructional schedules

do not allow teachers time to answer e-mail messages during their school day. E-mail messages from

parents to teachers will not be acknowledged during instruction time or until after dismissal at

3:15 p.m. each day.

NO e-mail messages to the school requesting changes in transportation, excuses for absences, medication

instructions, or personal messages for children will be accepted to ensure security and

confidentiality from sender.

XII. EARLY DISMISSAL

You will have the opportunity to sign up for Notify Me on the Alabaster City School Website. Notify

Me will give you updates on Creek View, Alabaster City Schools and Early Dismissal. However,

please listen to local TV and radio announcements. In case of bad weather you DO NOT need to come

check out your child. This is for the safety of you and your child. If your child is enrolled in Creek

View ASCP, your child will become a car rider. Arrangements will need to be made by parents to

pick up children who are in the After School Care Program (ASCP).

XIII. ELECTRONICS Cell Phone Use is not permitted within the school. If a student brings a cell phone to school, it must be

stored appropriately; not visible or audible during the school day. If a cell phone is seen or heard

it will be taken by a school administrator.

XIV. EMERGENCY DISMISSAL

Page 20: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

20

When inclement weather occurs, officials from Alabaster City Schools will decide if school will be

closed. The decision will be announced on local radio and television stations and will be posted on the

Alabaster City Schools’ web site.

If inclement weather or emergencies occur during the school day, city officials will notify the media of

any closings. In the event of an early school closing due to weather conditions, it is safest and best for

the children to go home using their regular mode of transportation.

EMERGENCY DISMISSAL cont. In these situations, we realize that parents may be anxious

about their children’s safety. Rest assured that we take their safety and security very seriously. We

will take whatever measures are necessary to maintain their safety. In that effort, we request that

parents help us keep the school telephone lines free so that we can make and receive contact from our

Board of Education, civil services agencies and so on.

On days when there is threatening weather, please attend to major radio and television for emergency

information. You may also refer to the Alabaster City Schools’ web site (www.acsboe.org). Under

Parent Resources, click on Safety and Security and then click on Inclement Weather and School

Closings.

XV. EXTENDED DAY CARE After school care is provided Monday through Friday from 3:00pm until 6:00pm. Various activities are provided

including homework assistance, craft projects, games, and play time. For more information call 205-

664-0080 after 3:00pm. The Extended Day Care Program is not part of the school program but part

of the Community Education Program.

XVI. FIELD TRIPS

Field trips are scheduled to provide educational experiences that are pertinent and appropriate for each

grade level. Field trips are correlated with the Alabama Course of Study and teachers develop specific

learning objectives for each field trip.

Permission slips will be sent home with each student and must be signed by the parent/guardian. A

signed permission form must also be returned before any student will be permitted to leave the school

grounds on a field trip. We do not accept verbal permission over the phone.

Students pay for the cost of the trip. Field trip money should be sent in a separate check from other

monies and in an envelope labeled “Field Trip.”

a. Field Trip Rules

1. All students must leave the school and return to the school with the group. There will

be no check-out from field trips. Students must return to school with their class. Only

teachers, chaperones and students from the class will be allowed to participate in field trips.

For everyone’s safety and protection, no one will be allowed to join a group at the site of a

field trip unless previously authorized.

2. All money and permission slips must be turned in during the designated time because

arrangements are made in advance. No late money can be taken after tickets have been

ordered. 3. All chaperones must arrive at the time designated by their child’s teacher.

4. All chaperones must pay unless otherwise notified.

Page 21: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

21

5. Students not attending field trips will stay in another classroom at school. The absence of a

student due to non-participation in a field trip will be unexcused.

Field Trips Cont.

b. Field Trip Chaperone Guidelines We appreciate the willingness of parents/guardians to

chaperone field trips. Your assistance helps us ensure a safe learning experience away from

school. “Thank you!” in advance.

1. Chaperones are depended upon to assist during the entire field trip. 2. Siblings are not allowed on the field trip. 3. Arrive at school promptly, as directed by the classroom teacher.

4. Report to the office first and get a Field Trip Chaperone badge unless you are

meeting the group at the field trip site.

5. Report to the classroom/designated area to receive instructions from the teacher. 6. Ask questions or share concerns with the teacher at any time. 7. Provide your own transportation to and from the field trip. You may want to

consider carpooling. 8. Remain with the class/assigned group at all times.

9. Inform the teacher of any students who misbehaved, would not follow

instructions, etc. 10. Contact the teacher at last two (2) days before the trip if you will not be able to

fulfill your chaperone duties. 11. Chaperone must be a legal guardian or parent unless authorized prior in writing.

Board policy does not allow students or preschool children to go even if they go in a separate car.

Only CVES students and school personnel may ride the school bus approved for field trip

transportation. Classroom provisions will be made for those students unable to attend the field trip.

XVII. GRADING AND REPORTING

Grading standards in subject areas are established by Alabaster City Schools. Nine week grades will

be assigned from such materials as test, homework, classwork, projects, and other sources identified by

teachers. Grade reports to parents will be sent home at the end of each nine weeks. The failure of a

student to bring their report card home should result in your calling the office. We will cooperate in

getting report cards to you. Please schedule a teacher conference if grades indicate a problem.

Parents may expect to receive graded papers and tests on a weekly basis.

Make-up work should be completed within two days for every day of an excused absence unless other

arrangements have been made with the teacher. IT SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE

STUDENT’S PARENTS OR GUARDIAN TO ARRANGE WITH THE TEACHER TO MAKE UP

WORK.

Page 22: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

XVIII. “Leaders of Their Own Learning”

CVES will implement Leader in Me leadership skills and 7 Habits of Happy Kids. The Leader in me is

a whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and

creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. These

skills include critical thinking, goal setting, listening, and speaking, self-directed learning, presentation

making and the ability to work in groups. The 7 Habits of Happy Kids include:

● Be Proactive ● Begin with the End in Mind ● Put First Things First ● Think Win-Win ● Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood ● Synergize ● Sharpen the Saw

XIX. HEAD LICE

Symptoms of head lice are irritation and itching of the scalp. Presence of light grey insects and nits

(eggs) in the hair mean the student is excluded from school until effective treatment of the scalp, skin,

and clothing is performed. Re-shampooing is recommended in seven to ten days with some products.

Please alert the school office if you suspect your child has lice. This information will be kept

confidential. However, it will allow the school to alert other parents in the classroom and hopefully

eliminate the problem.

All nits must be removed from the hair and students must be checked by the school nurse before

returning to school.

Head Lice

The Student Service Department of Alabaster City Schools has advised that absences due to lice

infestation, in excess of two days, must be reported as unexcused absences. Excessive absences

could subject parents to a citation from Family Court for the violation of the compulsory attendance law.

Additional information on the identification of head lice and effective treatment is available in the

nurse’s office. Any 3 occurrences within a 90-day period will be reported to the Shelby County Health

Department.

XX. HOMEWORK

Homework assignments are a very important part of the total school program. They are based on one

or more of the following purposes:

1. Drill and additional practice to strengthen new skills introduced in the classroom.

2. Complete unfinished classroom assignments.

3. Work on projects of short-term or long-term nature such as book reports, reading assignments,

projects, etc. participate in research activities in locating facts and data.

If you are concerned that your child has excessive homework, contact your child’s teacher for a

conference. It is imperative to check take home folders daily.

XXI. HOME/SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Page 23: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

23

We encourage open, frequent communication between school and the home. Regular contact between the home

and school helps our children see that both parents and teachers care about them and their progress. CVES

teachers communicate regularly, most on a weekly basis, with parents. This is usually in the form of a

newsletter that may contain homework information, curriculum/theme updates, important dates, field trip

information and so on. If you have questions, please communicate with your child’s teacher first. A conference

may be needed and can be requested by the teacher or the parent. If, after consulting with the teacher, parents

continue to have concerns, they are encouraged to contact administration.

It is the parent/guardian responsibility that all telephone numbers are current and in working order,

should the school need to contact you in case of an emergency; illness or behavior issues. Please

inform school should contact numbers change.

Teachers are asked to have at least one conference per semester with parents. Parents may schedule a

conference by sending a note to the teacher. Definite conference periods will be established and

parents should not intrude upon a teacher’s preparation time or interrupt classes without

permission from the administration. Please be respectful of scheduled conference times and

confidentiality of students.

XXII. LOST AND FOUND

Our lost and found box is located in the Cafeteria. To insure that a child’s lost items are promptly

returned, please label all personal articles, coats, sweaters, lunch boxes, etc. The lost and found box

is periodically emptied and the contents are sent to a charitable organization. Ask your child to check

the lost and found box immediately if an item is lost. Parents may also check the lost and found box for

lost items. Any unclaimed lost and found items are donated to charity at the end of each 9 week period.

XXIII. LUNCHROOM

We will continue to use the student account number system for lunch and breakfast. This system

maintains an account for each child; therefore your child may eat either breakfast or lunch as long as

they maintain an account balance. It is the responsibility of the parent to make sure their child has

funds in their cafeteria account. Should your child’s account be negative, this money should be paid

directly to the cafeteria.

Free and reduced priced meals are available to qualified students. If you believe your child is eligible

to receive free or reduced meals, please complete an application online at

https://paypams.com/OnlineApp.aspx or return the form immediately to the office to prevent the student

from accruing a negative lunch account balance. If hardship arises during the year, forms may be

obtained any time in the office.

If your child was on free or reduced meals last year at Creek View Elementary, you are required to

complete and return a new form every year. The student will be removed from the free/reduced

program if a new form has not been received. If you are approved for free or reduced lunch, you are

also approved for free or reduced breakfast.

Page 24: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

a. Cafeteria/Child Nutrition Program (CNP)

The CVES Cafeteria provides delicious, healthy meals for our boys and girls. We welcome

adults to dine with their children during lunch. Guests may sit with their child at a guest table.

We ask that our guests help us consistently reinforce our Mealtime Rules:

● Say “Please,” “Thank you” and “Excuse me.” ● Sit flat at table with feet under the lunch table. ● Use a napkin. ● Eat first. ● Speak quietly to your neighbors. ● Clean up your own space.

Please check with your child regularly to see if s/he needs additional money placed in her/his lunch

account. Parent/Guardians are notified when lunch accounts show a negative balance. It is the

parent/guardian responsibility to cover expenses of lunch purchases.

Meal Prices for the 2019-2020 School Year

Breakfast: Elementary/Intermediate -- $1.25 Sixth Grade Center/Middle/ High -- $1.25 Faculty/Staff -- $1.75 Visitor -- $2.25 Lunch: Elementary/Intermediate -- $2.75 Sixth Grade Center/Middle/ High -- $3.00 Faculty/Staff -- $3.75 Adult/Visitor -- $4.25

Feel free to call Heather McDermott, CNP Director at 205-663-8460 if you have any questions.

The lunch period is a planned part of the school program and provisions should be made for all

students to eat in the lunchroom. Please encourage your child to participate in our school lunch

program, whereby we may teach them the proper use of trays and utensils, responsibility in handling

money, appropriate lunchroom manners, awareness of proper lunchroom procedures, and knowledge in

nutrition education. Students may bring lunches to school, but we ask that no bottles or breakable

thermos jugs be used. Microwaves are not available for student use. To ensure proper nutrition, coke

type products and carbonated drinks will not be allowed.

b. Lunchroom Visitors

Parents are welcome to eat breakfast/lunch at school with their own child at a visitor's table.

Birthday treat, etc. may be taken to and eaten in the Cafeteria only after the scheduled

lunchtime has been concluded and is not considered a party.

The Alabaster City Schools Child Nutrition Program is proud to provide access to

www.myschoolbucks.com. This service allows parents to go on-line to fund their child’s lunch

account. It also allows parents to view their child’s account balance and a week of purchases.

XXIV. MEDIA CENTER

The Library Media Center plays a significant role in your child's education and we are available for

Teachers, students, and parents. Students will come to the library twice a month. Please check with

your child's teacher to see when that will be. It is very important for them to have their books returned

on time so that they will be able to check out new books each visit. We also welcome family members

to visit the library, use computers, and borrow materials that we have available to use at home.

We will have two book fairs during the school year to provide books and materials for your family to

enjoy at home.

a. Birthday Book Club

The library sponsors a Birthday Book Club. This is a great opportunity to enhance the library

collection, while honoring your child’s special day. If you chose to participate for a $15

donation, a bookplate will be placed in a book of their choice and your child’s picture will be

displayed on the birthday board in the hallway. To participate please pick-up a form from the

library.

b. Library Volunteers

There are many opportunities to volunteer in the library repairing books, sorting, shelving, copying,

and helping with our book fairs. Please let the PTO know you are interested in this area.

c. Library Fines

The Media Center does not charge overdue fines, but if a book is beyond repair or lost, the cost of

replacement is $18.00. Library privileges will be suspended until all overdue books are

returned, or the $18.00 is paid. Please note no refunds will be given. If you have questions

regarding library policy or materials, please contact Jackie Killingsworth at 685-6163. Check

the CVES Library Media website for resources at cves.acsboe.org

XXV. MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

The term “medication” as used below includes but is not limited to prescription and non-prescription

products, chemicals, pills, vitamins, herbal agents, and other substances used as a treatment or remedy

for a medical condition, injury, or disease.

All MEDICATIONS must be turned into the nurse’s office by the student’s parent or guardian

in the original container. NO student will be permitted to carry or possess any type of

medication whether prescription or non-prescription on their person at any time during school

hours, including transporting to and from school. The school nurse will only dispense prescription

medications that have been prescribed by a licensed prescriber. NO NON-PRESCIPTION

medications will be given to the student during school hours unless specifically authorized by a

parent/guardian. The school will not give any medicine to students through parent telephone request.

Each medication given by the nurse, whether prescribed or non-prescription will require the following:

Page 26: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

26

1. Licensed Prescriber Authorization - A school medication form must be administered for more than

a two week period. If the medication order has changed during the school year by the licensed

prescriber, a new signed form is necessary.

2. Parent/Guardian Authorization - The parent/guardian must sign the School Medication Prescriber /

Parent Authorization form before any medication can be administered by the school.

a. MEDICATION LABELING:

1. For prescription medications, a current pharmacy labeled container is required which

includes the student’s name, prescriber’s name, name of medication, strength, dosage time

interval, route, and date of drug’s discontinuation when appropriate.

2. For non-prescription medications, an original container of the drug identifying the

medication and all the manufacturer’s labeling plus the student’s name (written on the

container) should be supplied by the parent/guardian.

3. All medication will be counted and recorded by the nurse as it is received.

XXVI. MONEY/CHECK GUIDELINES

We are not allowed to cash checks. Please make every effort to send exact amounts when sending

cash to school. All money must be sent in separate envelopes for each item. We recommend that any

money brought to school be sealed in an envelope with the student’s name and the teacher’s name

clearly written on it. Please specify what the money is for (i.e., lunch, field trip, etc.). All checks

MUST be payable to Creek View Elementary School. We must have one (1) telephone number and

street address recorded on each check.

Non Sufficient Funds Checks Policy: Any check returned for insufficient funds will go directly to our

collection agency. There will be a fee for collection in addition to the individual bank charges.

● Bank guidelines require that all checks sent to CVES should be written in dark blue or black

inks only. ● No counter checks allowed ● No post dated checks allowed

XXVII. PARENT - TEACHER ORGANIZATION (PTO)

Cooperation between home and school is essential to develop an educational program which will greatly

enrich the students. The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) is an important component of the total

school support system. All parent/guardians and teachers are considered members; please visit

cvespto.org for updated information. The PTO is only as strong as the parents and teachers make it.

Your active participation in this organization is strongly encouraged. Show your support by participating

in events sponsored by PTO.

XXVIII. PARENT VOLUNTEERS We encourage the participation of parents as volunteers in our school. Please arrange schedules with

your PTO/school office. School volunteers cannot bring siblings or younger children while

volunteering. This is a policy of Alabaster City Schools. Volunteers are not at liberty to drop by their

child’s class if working in designated areas in the school; unannounced visitors cause disruptions of the

academic day. If you are willing to help volunteer weekly and/or daily please contact the school office

at (205)685-6100. Due to student confidentiality materials to be cut, copied, etc… for a classroom will

be picked up and delivered to the front desk of the main office. Volunteers should remain in workroom

Page 27: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

27

or designated area when volunteering to ensure student safety and confidentiality.

XXIX. PARTIES: SCHOOL AND BIRTHDAY

In addition to an end-of-the-year party, each classroom may have two (2) holiday parties—Christmas

and End of the Year. These parties are held in the classroom and are coordinated with the teacher and

homeroom mothers. There will be a special snack for Valentine’s Day. For safety reasons, we do not

allow participation in these parties by siblings or other children not enrolled at Creek View

Elementary School. If a child has not been at school half the school day, the student cannot attend

extracurricular activities i.e.: class parties and school performances.

a. Parties: Invitations, Balloons, and Flowers

Invitations, balloons, and flowers for private parties may not be distributed at school. Hurt

feelings can occur when invitations to birthday parties and other non-school events are passed

out at school. Balloons and flowers can be a disruption to the school day and cannot be

transported by school bus.

b. Party Refreshments

The following question and response come from the Alabama State Department of Education

Child Nutrition Frequently Asked Questions web site:

I want to bring a birthday cake and refreshments to my child’s room for his birthday. What

are the restrictions?

The policy prohibits “any food or beverage that has sugar or high fructose corn syrup listed as

the first ingredient on the school premises until after the end of the last scheduled class.” This

would not preclude a parent from bringing a birthday cake, cupcakes, or other baked item for a

birthday party. It does preclude any use of soft drinks or sweetened beverages to such a

celebration during the school day. It would be very important to read the label and make the

determination if any item has the first ingredient listed as sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

Special desserts can be provided at the end of lunch with in the lunchroom. This would be a

special snack but not considered a birthday party.

XXX. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Students are expected to participate in all P.E. activities unless parents send a written request for non-

participation due to illness or injury. Extended illness must have a doctor’s excuse. Students must

wear tennis shoes to physical education class.

XXXI. PROBLEM SOLVING TEAM (PST)

The State of Alabama defines PST as “a model to guide general education intervention services for all

students who have academic and/or behavioral difficulties. The PST is central to the school’s

successful implementation of the Response to Instruction (RtI) framework.”

Team members discuss concerns related to specific needs of students and teachers and offer

teachers assistance in resolving concerns. The PST is composed of regular education teachers,

Page 28: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

28

Guidance Counselors, the Reading Coach, administrators, parents and other individuals, as needed.

The Assistant Principal chairs this team. Occasionally, Special Education teachers attend these

meetings.

There is a very specific referral process for PST. Typically, children who are experiencing

some kind of difficulty (i.e., academic, behavior, attention or social interactions) in school have

already been referred to the Diagnostic Child Study Team. If Child Study Team interventions have

proven unsuccessful, then the child may be referred to the PST. Working as a team, the PST shares

information about the child, reviews work samples, assessment and test results. Once a specific are of

concern has been identified, the team develops an intervention plan of appropriate strategies to help the

child. The classroom teacher implements the plan for 6 weeks, documenting performance weekly.

The child’s progress is regularly monitored to determine if adequate progress is being made, if the plan

of interventions needs to be revised or if the plan can be discontinued.

a. Grade Level Professional Learning Community & Enrichment Team: “Teachers helping teachers help children”

The Enrichment Team process will be implemented at CVES during the 2019-2020 school

year. The purpose of the team is to provide support to colleagues who have students who are

experiencing academic and/or behavioral concerns needing different strategies to meet specific

needs. It follows the same Response to Instruction (RtI) framework required of the PST and

enables us to quickly provide purposeful interventions for students who are having difficulty.

Grade Level PLC Teams meet regularly to collaborate with teachers about students who are

experiencing difficulty or who would benefit from additional content. Based on individual

student needs, intervention strategies are identified and implemented for both school and home.

Frequent communication with parents and parental support are critical elements in this process.

Student progress is closely monitored and, if necessary, interventions are modified in order to

help students achieve their greatest learning potential. Administration is kept apprised of the

students being supported through the PLC Team process and is more directly involved, when

necessary or requested. If interventions within the classroom do not prove successful, then the

child may be referred to the school Problem Solving Team (PST).

XXXII. SEARCH AND SEIZURE

The principal or authorized school official may conduct a search and seizure. Searches and seizures may

extend only to school property, private automobiles parked on school premises, and the student.

Additional information is provided in the Alabaster City Schools Code of Conduct and Attendance

Handbook.

XXXIII. SNACK

We encourage students to develop good eating habits by choosing healthy food during snack time.

Students may bring snacks but, please Do Not Allow your child to bring cola, candy, or other sugary

foods for snack.

XXXIV. STUDENT RECOGNITION SYSTEM

Page 29: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

29

Our Student Recognition System was developed to recognize and reinforce desirable student behavior

in a developmentally appropriate manner. We utilize the following forms of recognition.

a. Class 100’s Chart

Purpose: Recognize an entire class for demonstrating appropriate behavior, foster positive

interdependence and a sense of community within each class.

Process: Each classroom receives a chart with 100 squares on it. When a staff member other

than the classroom teacher compliments the entire class for exemplary behavior, the classroom

teacher marks off one square. After earning 100 compliments, the chart is wiped clean and the

class may begin the process again.

Recognition Method: Each class that earns 100 compliments will: (1) be recognized during morning

announcements (2) enjoy a party (i.e., popcorn, popsicles, cookies, sundaes, etc.) funded by our PTO

b. Warrior Cards Purpose: Recognize students who demonstrate extra effort ---academically, socially, behaviorally or in

some other way that positively affects their learning or the learning of others. Recipients may be

students who consistently demonstrate effort or students who have made a special effort in a particular

area that deserves special reinforcement/recognition. For whatever reason, recipient behavior should be

of the “knocks your socks off” variety.

Process: The teacher fills out a warrior card and the student brings it to the office and will put it in the

warrior cars box.

Recognition Method: Once a week, names will be drawn from the warrior card box and the names will

be announced on the morning news. Students whose names are called will be rewarded with a treat from

the office.

c. NBA – Never Been Absent Certificates - perfect attendance each 9 weeks.

d. Positive Office Referral - Positive phone call home by administration for students who have

been referred by their classroom teacher for exemplary behavior choices.

XXXV. SUPPLIES

Supplies needed at school other than textbooks must be provided by the parent. This includes paper,

pencils, notebooks, and other supplies as designated by the teacher. Students are to come to class

prepared daily.

If students are in need of school supplies, please contact the school counselor.

XXXVI. TEACHER REQUEST GUIDELINES

To ensure equity for all students, we do not encourage requests from students, parents or guardians for

specific teachers. Students will be randomly placed in heterogeneous groups with teachers.

● If parents/guardians feel that their child has special needs which they would like the school to

consider when placing him/her in classes for the following school year, they may express this

in writing to Mrs. Cole, school principal. ● Requests for specific teachers are not considered. ● If, based on previous, personal experience, there is a specific teacher that parents wish their

child not to be placed with the following school year, this request should also be submitted in

Page 30: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

30

writing to the principal; it must include a thorough explanation of the previous, personal

experience. Requests of this nature that do not include an explanation of the previous

experience will not be considered. ● Requests based on hear-say will not be considered.

The deadline for all written requests is the last day of school. Requests should be signed and dated.

Phone requests will not be accepted. Requests that do not adhere to the guidelines described above

will also not be considered.

Appropriate requests, as described above, will be given serious consideration. However, there is no

guarantee that all requests can or will be honored.

XXXVII. TEXTBOOKS

All textbooks are the property of the State of Alabama and Alabaster City Schools. No writing should

be done in or on textbooks. It is the responsibility of the student to keep up with their own books. Lost

or damaged books must be paid in full before a replacement may be issued. This is in accordance

with Alabaster City Schools policy. Prices for textbooks may be obtained in the office.

XXXVIII. TORNADO, FIRE, AND INTRUDER DRILLS

Student safety is our primary concern. Fire, tornado, and intruder drills are held monthly to ensure

student safety and to teach students basic safety procedures.

In the event of a tornado warning, the student must remain in the care of the school. If a parent wishes

to check out a student, the parent must sign a checkout slip after the warning has been lifted.

XXXIX. TRANSPORTATION Students may be transported to and from school by bus or automobile. Method of transportation should

be designated in writing by the parent upon enrollment in school. Changes in transportation will

only be allowed for cases of EMERGENCY and must be communicated in writing to school

officials. NO TRANSPORTATION CHANGES WILL BE TAKEN OVER THE PHONE OR

BY FAX. Written requests for changes should be made to school officials on the morning of the

proposed change. Written instructions are needed by 2:00 p.m. All communication must have

the date parent wants the change made. To ensure your child’s safety, parents must write a note

every time there is a change, however excessive changes in transportation are discouraged and will

require approval from administration.

Transportation

a. Car Line Directions

1. AM At 7:00am car riders will be allowed to get out of their cars and enter the building. There will be two

lines of traffic. If the student gets out of their car on the side closest to the building, they should walk on

the sidewalk to the door. If your child gets out on the far lane, they will walk down the middle to the

center entrance before crossing to enter the building. Car rider supervisors will monitor students exiting

cars and entering the building.

● Teach your child to unbuckle his/her seatbelt. Staff members will be present to assist with opening

doors, however, please encourage your child to open her/his car door independently.

● It is not necessary to post your car line number in the morning.

Page 31: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

31

● For the safety of our students, please refrain from using your cell phone while in the car rider

line.

● Students should not exit their cars until a staff member motions at the appropriate time once

traffic has stopped.

2. PM Please follow these directions so that our children can be loaded safely and quickly.

● Forming the Line: Vehicles may form two lines while waiting in the car rider line but the closer

you get to the school, one line should be formed.

● Know Your Number: Your child’s car line number will be assigned during registration. Practice

having your child recognize the number when s/he sees it AND when s/he hears it. Ask your child

to listen closely and respond quickly when their name and the color they are to go to is called (i.e.,

stand and go to a teacher). Children are directed to go to cars when traffic has stopped.

● Show Your Number: As you approach the front of the school, a school official with a bull horn

will announce your child’s name and will call out a color for them to go to. Please display your

child’s number from your rearview mirror, well in advance of approaching the school official and

keep it there until your child has been placed in your vehicle.

● Picking Up Your Child: Your child will be assigned to an area according to his/her grade level.

Teachers will help the children find their assigned area during the first few days of school. As cars

merge into a single line and pull in front the school, the first car in each group should pull up to the

teacher with the stop sign close to the color. Do not stop near your child. A teacher will direct

your child to your vehicle and see that s/he is safely inside. Students are loaded into the passenger

side of the vehicle. Please have the doors unlocked.

● The Need for Parents to Pull Over: Several weeks into the school year, after expectations and

routines have consistently been taught and reinforced, drivers of students who do not respond

promptly to their car number when called will be asked to pull over, exit their vehicle, locate their

child and take him/her by the hand to their vehicle.

● Frequently Late Drivers: Afternoon drivers who are chronically late when picking up their child

will be asked to sign up for the After School Care Program.

Let’s Be Safe and Courteous: ● Please refrain from using cell phones when dropping off or picking up children. ● Graciously merge from two lines into one. If not given directions by the school official, take

turns merging. ● Please require all children in the vehicle to remain seated and belted while you drive through

the car line. ● Smoking is not allowed on any part of our school campus, including the car line.

b. BUS TRANSPORTATION

Every rider is required to obey the bus safety rules or be subject to removal from the bus. A

student may ride only their assigned bus and get off at their assigned stops, except by written

request from the parent or guardian. This request must be made to the school office the

morning of the proposed bus change. This request must be signed by the school administrator

and then given to the bus driver. Due to bus safety and to prevent overcrowding students who

do not normally ride the school bus can not ride home with a friend.

Bus Rules:

Page 32: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

32

1. Talk only in a normal voice. Keep quiet when approaching a railroad crossing.

2. Remain seated at all times, keep head and hands inside the bus.

3. Do not eat, drink, smoke, or strike matches.

4. Do not tamper with any of the equipment on the bus, especially the emergency doors.

5. Do not carry weapons of any kind.

6. Do not throw objects inside or outside of the bus.

7. Do not leave the bus except at the regular stop without written permission from the administration.

8. Obey instructions given by driver.

9. Violations of bus rules will be treated as any other discipline problem.

10. See ACS Policy Manual and Procedures.

c. DISMISSAL To ensure a safe dismissal for everyone, we strive to make dismissal time calm and orderly. A routine

is established the first day of school in which students are called to After School Care, buses, daycare

vans and car riders. Students are closely supervised during dismissal.

Students are not allowed to wait for parents in classrooms.

Please keep these additional dismissal guidelines in mind:

● Establish a consistent dismissal routine with your children. When students know that they

always go home a specific way, they are less likely to get confused and more likely to get home

safely and on time. ● Changes to established individual student dismissal routines must be made in writing to the

child’s teacher. ● When a child’s regular dismissal plans need to be altered during the school day due to an

emergency, they must be made in writing and submitted no later than 2:00 p.m. ● Make arrangements with your child for after school activities before the child comes to school.

Routines are essential for a safe and timely dismissal. Last minute changes can cause confusion. ● Once bus dismissal has begun, students cannot be dismissed from school through check-out

procedures. The parent should go to designated bus stop and wait for the student to arrive.

XL. VISITORS

Alabaster City Schools policy and academic integrity require that when visitors, volunteers or contractors check-in, or parents come to pick up students, they will be asked to present a valid state issued ID for entering into the Raptor system. The system has the ability to provide alerts on people who may jeopardize the safety of the campus. We feel certain this will help us keep our campus safer, and ask for your cooperation in presenting your valid state issued ID when checking in at the school. Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

a. OTHER VISITATION—

Parents are welcome to walk their child to his/her classroom the first day of school. Teachers

and students have routine activities that must be done before the bell rings. Parents who need to

talk with a teacher may make an appointment during the teacher’s planning time.

School Procedure for Visits During the Regular School Day

While parents are frequently invited to special programs and events on campus (e.g., honors programs,

plays, concerts, events, PTO meetings, etc.) that are not typically a part of a regular school day, parents

sometimes wish to have additional opportunities to visit with their child during the regular school day

(e.g. eating lunch with their child or volunteering). The school allows such visits provided that the

visit will not disrupt the educational environment for students. The principal or designee is authorized

Page 33: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

33

to restrict such visits in order to maintain appropriate security, minimize disruption and distraction

within the learning environment, or to avoid a potential safety risk to a student or employee.

Adults visiting the school during the regular school day must abide by the following procedures:

● Report directly to the office to sign-in and be prepared to present a state issued photo

identification. ● Be listed on the student checkout form indicating that visits by the person in question are allowed

at school. If custody arrangements change, guardians are to notify the school. ● Wear the visitor’s badge given to them by the office staff so that it is visible while on-campus.

● Cooperate with any directions regarding the visit given by school staff.

In addition, the following rules apply to adult visitors:

● Do not take pictures, video, or make audio recordings of students other than your child or the

student you are visiting.

● If eating lunch in the lunchroom, ● Only the student you are visiting will be allowed to eat lunch with you. ● You may purchase the school lunch or bring one from home. Bringing in restaurant

food is discouraged. ● You must visit during the child’s regularly scheduled lunch time.

● You must sit at the round visitor tables inside the lunchroom or at the tables outside the

cafeteria area. ● You may not visit other areas of the campus without prior office approval.

● If you are volunteering in the school, ● You must coordinate a time for your visit with the school office and the classroom

teacher in question.

● You must have the approval of the school office and/or classroom teacher for the

volunteer work you are performing. ● You must minimize any disruption to the school environment that your presence might

create. ● Siblings are not permitted to be with visitors while volunteering.

Visitors who do not follow these procedure, rules, or the instructions of school staff; who disrupt the

learning environment; or who create potential safety risk to a student or employee may be asked to

leave campus and may be restricted from visiting the school in the future.

XLI. CHAMPS Preschool

Creek View is offering a preschool program for students age 4 by September 2nd for the 2019-

2020 school year. This program follows federal guidelines to serve 2 classrooms having 18

students with 1 classroom teacher and 1 paraprofessional supporting each classroom

environment. Students participating in the program must have applied prior to the April 30th

deadline and were drawn randomly at a public board meeting in May. There is a waiting list for

students who were not originally selected to complete the classroom roster for enrollment in the

program, this list will be utilized if any of the first students selected no longer participate.

Arrival/Dismissal

All Preschool Students participating in the CHAMPS Preschool should arrive between 7:45 a.m.

Page 34: Welcome to Creek View Elementary School...1 Welcome to Creek View Elementary School An Alabaster City School 2019-2020 Principal – Mrs. Charissa Cole Assistant Principal – Mrs

34

and 8:00 a.m. daily. Preschool students will dismiss at 2:30 p.m. each day. Preschool students

are to be transported by car to and from school and are offered Extended Day Care through our

ACS After School Care Program from 2:30-6:00 p.m. for a weekly/drop-in daily cost. Paperwork

must be on file to ensure appropriate means of transportation and dismissal with the Preschool

Teacher, School Office, and Extended Day Program.

Any questions pertaining to the CHAMPS Preschool Program can be answered by coordinator

of Federal Programs Director, Dr. Ke’ Jones through contact with the Alabaster City School

Board of Education 663-8400.
