Who is AP appropriate for?

AP is open to any student from any background

AP is not necessarily right for everyone

Students must be disciplined, curious, and have

a strong desire to work hard and learn.

AP is for students who want to learn along side

other dedicated classmates in a challenging and

rigorous environment.

AP is for students who love to learn.

What is special about AP?

Skills developed in AP classes thoroughly prepare students for college courses

Discussions are challenging, engaging, probing and intellectual

AP students are taught to be critical and discriminating readers and thinkers. Teaching students to evaluate and interpret challenging primary source texts is a crucial AP component

AP classes teach students to analyze, interpret, reason, and understand their subject from multiple perspectives

What are the advantages of taking

AP classes?

AP classes are highly regarded by universities

and college admission officers.

AP success is directly correlated to success at the

university level. Students who succeed in AP

generally excel at the university level.

AP prepares students for the rigors of college.

Many students feel confident and ready to enter

college after AP. Many say college is easier.

What’s this AP test I hear so much

about?

Every AP class has a rigorous 2-3 hour final exam given in May.

Depending on the score, universities may grant credit, advanced placement, or both. The AP website gives specific credit information on nearly every major US university.

Every university is different, but generally, some give credit for a three, most for a four, and nearly all for a five.

Any other benefits?

AP could allow students to double major more

easily

AP could allow students to graduate early

Students may save money—course

waivers/credit earned in AP could save them

thousands of dollars per course.

Okay—let’s be honest. This could save parents

thousands of dollars per course.

What….more benefits?

Many CHS AP teachers give students who score

a 4 or 5 on the test and have no missing

assignments a grade bump in the course.

Starting with the class of 2012, AP grades at

CHS are factored in the class rank calculation on

a five point scale.

Cornerstone

College in the HS This program is intended to provide

students a course option consisting of

attendance in the high school while

simultaneous earning of university

credit.

Page 23: Welcome to CHS - Camas High School - "Home of the …chs.camas.wednet.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/ap_powerpoint.pdf · Why? CHS Vision The mission of Camas High School is to prepare

Who is eligible?

• Tenth (10th),Eleventh (11th), and

Twelfth (12th) grade students have a

right granted by Legislature to

participate in forms of Dual Credit

classes. The exercise of that right is

subject only to minimal eligibility and

procedural requirements, which are

spelled out in state administrative

rules.

What are the benefits of

Cornerstone?

• College credit is granted at the same time as high school graduation

requirements are being met

• Student may be ready for a more vigorous academic experience

• Significant Financial savings

• no textbooks or parking passes to purchase now

• Saving thousands on future university tuition

• Students earn university credit while still involved on their high school campus

(services, support, safety)

• Schedule follows high school calendar, unlike Running Start programs where a

student may have competing schedules off-campus

Page 25: Welcome to CHS - Camas High School - "Home of the …chs.camas.wednet.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/ap_powerpoint.pdf · Why? CHS Vision The mission of Camas High School is to prepare

• Grades become part of student’s permanent record

• Challenging to take classes simultaneously at the high

school and at CWU

• One five credit course at CWU will require

approximately 10 hours of study time per week
