WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room.
Please feel free to take this publication away with you.
Dear Cathedralites
My prayer is that this year at the cathedral we will be lively, functional and God honouring. This morning at 10, our choir comes back especially from the holidays to celebrate Epiphany Sunday. While it means we have to sing again ‘We three kings of orient are’, it does signal the fact that many countries in the west have maintained January 6 as a very special day!! It’s on that day that some in America and Europe make cakes with a little model of Jesus somehow hidden in the cake. At teatime, when the cake is cut, the person who ends up with the piece of cake with Jesus in it, is “king” for the rest of the day or in some cases for the rest of the month.
Thank you so much to Sally Astridge and her team who made a wonderful meal for CAMEO on Friday. In January, many people are away on holiday leaving ones lonely at home and so Sally encouraged us to have a CAMEO during this month.
Next Sunday, we celebrate the baptism of Jesus, while the following Sunday I am going to look at one of the most radical changes in leadership witnessed in the Bible. I am mentioning three Sundays in a row because this letter spans the next three weeks, giving Teresa a much deserved holiday break.
The Christmas Tree Festival has been fantastic. My son in law Phil recorded a thousand visitors in the cathedral on one day soon after Christmas.
I am keen that those who come on Sunday from other sides of the world or New Zealand are given a really good welcome as they enter our cathedral for the first time. Even if they are just tourists wanting to take a photo in the middle of our church service, let them do it. Who knows what they will hear from God in those few minutes they happen to inhabit the cathedral. One of my favourite parables Jesus tells is the one where he goes to the highways and byways and invites everybody in. May that be the sort of cathedral we have here in Nelson; no one is excluded, all are welcome. We may say the words but our actions need to reinforce them with our lively and friendly welcome.
Christopher Jonas (CBE) will be staging a photographic display at the end of January here in the cathedral. It promises to be amazing. If you have an interest in photography and Cathedrals then contact Murray Campbell who is our local contact for Christopher and Lady Judith as they spend summer here in Nelson.
Patsy and I will not be on any significant holiday over New Year. However, my brother is at French Pass so we may camp a couple of days at Elaine Bay and do the day trip out to see him and eat some of his fish!! (I may even catch a few!!)
Can I commend a mission by Jim Doack and Mark Hermans here at the cathedral from January 18 to 20. Paul Devine who has been a faithful member of our 7pm service

is the local contact and knows Jim well. I’ll be trying to get there as much as I can. The main public services will be at 7pm on Friday 18th, 6 pm on Saturday and 6.30pm on Sunday 20th at the cathedral. Thanks very much to everyone who helped for our Christmas services. Congrats to John Laing, our children’s worker who turn 60 about now. It was lovely to help Diana Collins celebrate her 80th birthday recently.
May you have a chance to enjoy the fantastic playground God has provided in this Nelson Tasman region. While James our grandson was here we went swimming 6 days in a row, either in the Maitai river, or at Tahunanui beach. It was glorious for which we praise God.
Have a great few weeks. In His service, Mike

The Sentence and Collects for the day (6 January 2019)
Sentence In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. Matthew 2:1a
Epiphany Collect God of all wisdom, As the wise men were guided to Your stable by a star: so lead us through this world with gifts of love, reason, and wisdom that we shall know and love You, our beginning and our end; through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

1Arise, shine; for your light has come,
and the glory of the LORD has risen
upon you. 2 For darkness shall cover
the earth, and thick darkness the
peoples; but the LORD will arise upon
you, and his glory will appear over you. 3 Nations shall come to your light, and
kings to the brightness of your dawn. 4 Lift up your eyes and look around; they
all gather together, they come to you;
your sons shall come from far away,
and your daughters shall be carried on
their nurses’ arms. 5 Then you shall see
and be radiant; your heart shall thrill
and rejoice, because the abundance of
the sea shall be brought to you, the
wealth of the nations shall come to you. 6 A multitude of camels shall cover
you, the young camels of Midian and
Ephah; all those from Sheba shall
come. They shall bring gold and frank-
incense, and shall proclaim the praise
of the LORD.
7 Of this Gospel I have become a
servant according to the gift of God’s
grace that was given to me by the work-
ing of his power. 8 Although I am the
very least of all the saints, this grace
was given to me to bring to the Gentiles
the news of the boundless riches of
Christ, 9 and to make everyone
see what is the plan of the mystery
hidden for ages in God who created all
things; 10 so that through the church the
wisdom of God in its rich variety might
now be made known to the rulers
and authorities in the heavenly
places. 11 This was in accordance with
the eternal purpose that he has carried
out in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom
we have access to God in boldness and
confidence through faith in him.
1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus
was born in Bethlehem of Judea,
wise men from the East came to
Jerusalem, 2 asking, ‘Where is the child
who has been born king of the Jews?
For we observed his star at its
rising, and have come to pay him hom-
age.’ 3 When King Herod heard this, he
was frightened, and all Jerusalem with
him; 4 and calling together all the chief
priests and scribes of the people, he
inquired of them where the
Messiah was to be born. 5 They told
him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it
has been written by the prophet: 6 “And
you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers
of Judah; for from you shall come a
ruler who is to shepherd my people
Israel.”’ 7 Then Herod secretly called for
the wise men and learned from them
the exact time when the star had
appeared. 8 Then he sent them to
Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search
diligently for the child; and when you
have found him, bring me word so that
Isaiah 60:1-6

4
I may also go and pay him
homage.’ 9 When they had heard the
king, they set out; and there, ahead of
them, went the star that they had seen
at its rising, until it stopped over the
place where the child was. 10 When
they saw that the star had stopped, they
were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On
entering the house, they saw the child
with Mary his mother; and they knelt
down and paid him homage. Then,
opening their treasure-chests, they of-
fered him gifts of gold, frankincense,
and myrrh. 12 And having been warned
in a dream not to return to Herod, they
left for their own country by another
road.
Isaiah 60:4-11 4 Lift up your eyes and look around; they
all gather together, they come to you;
your sons shall come from far away,
and your daughters shall be carried on
their nurses’ arms. 5 Then you shall see
and be radiant; your heart shall thrill
and rejoice, because the abundance of
the sea shall be brought to you, the
wealth of the nations shall come to you. 6 A multitude of camels shall cover you,
the young camels of Midian and Ephah;
all those from Sheba shall come. They
shall bring gold and frankincense, and
shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. 7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be
gathered to you, the rams of Nebaioth
shall minister to you; they shall be
acceptable on my altar, and I will glorify
my glorious house. 8 Who are these that
fly like a cloud, and like doves to their
windows? 9 For the coastlands shall
wait for me, the ships of Tarshish first,
to bring your children from far
away, their silver and gold with them,
for the name of the LORD your God, and
for the Holy One of Israel, because he
has glorified you. 10 Foreigners shall
build up your walls, and their kings shall
minister to you; for in my wrath I struck
you down, but in my favour I have had
mercy on you. 11 Your gates shall
always be open; day and night they
shall not be shut, so that nations shall
bring you their wealth, with their kings
led in procession.
John 1:1-14
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God; 3 all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might
believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.9 The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. 11 He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the
5
will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace
and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.

The Sentence and Collects for the day (13 January 2019)
Sentence John answered all of them by saying, " I baptise you with water; but
one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Luke 3:16
Collect Almighty God, You anointed Jesus at His baptism with the Holy
Spirit, and revealed His as You beloved Son; grant that we who are baptised into His name may give up our lives to Your ser-vice, and be found worthy of our calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

13 January – 5.30pm Readings:
Isaiah 55:1-11
1 Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the
waters; and you that have no money,
come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine
and milk without money and without
price. 2 Why do you spend your money
for that which is not bread, and your la-
bour for that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to me, and eat what is
good, and delight yourselves in rich
food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to
me; listen, so that you may live. I will
make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 See,
I made him a witness to the peoples, a
leader and commander for the peoples. 5 See, you shall call nations that you do
not know, and nations that do not know
you shall run to you, because of
the LORD your God, the Holy One of Is-
rael, for he has glorified you. 6 Seek
the LORD while he may be found, call
upon him while he is near; let the
wicked forsake their way, and the un-
righteous their thoughts; let them return
to the LORD, that he may have mercy on
them, and to our God, for he will abun-
dantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are
not your thoughts, nor are your ways
my ways, says the LORD. 9 For as the
heavens are higher than the earth, so
are my ways higher than your ways and
my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 For
as the rain and the snow come down
from heaven, and do not return there
until they have watered the earth, mak-
ing it bring forth and sprout, giving seed
to the sower and bread to the eater, 11 so shall my word be that goes out
from my mouth; it shall not return to me
empty, but it shall accomplish that
which I purpose, and succeed in the
thing for which I sent it. Romans 6:1-11
1 What then are we to say? Should we
continue in sin in order that grace may
abound? 2 By no means! How can we
who died to sin go on living in it? 3 Do
you not know that all of us who have
been baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we
have been buried with him by baptism
into death, so that, just as Christ was
raised from the dead by the glory of the
Father, so we too might walk in new-
ness of life. 5 For if we have been united
with him in a death like his, we will cer-
tainly be united with him in a resurrec-
tion like his. 6 We know that our old self
was crucified with him so that the body
of sin might be destroyed, and we might
no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For who-
ever has died is freed from sin. 8 But if
we have died with Christ, we believe
that we will also live with him. 9 We
know that Christ, being raised from the
dead, will never die again; death no
longer has dominion over him. 10 The
death he died, he died to sin, once for
all; but the life he lives, he lives to
God. 11 So you also must consider your-
selves dead to sin and alive to God in
Christ Jesus.

Sentence His mother said to the servants, “ Do whatever he tells you”. John 2:5

_______________________________________________________________ 20 January – 5.30pm Reading: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11, 12 1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 making every calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. 7 But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 11 The gifts he gave were that some would be evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.

ST BARNABAS PRAYER SUNDAY 6: Our Lord and Saviour, we remember today Your followers in Nepal and praise You for the tremendous Church growth there in recent years. Please equip Nepali Christians with wis-dom and boldness, as You did Peter and John, to follow Your commands to be Your witnesses, to speak of what they have seen and heard of Your grace, power and love in their lives. May they listen to Your voice and obey Your com-mands, even though the new law which came into force in Nepal in September means that any public Christian activity is potentially illegal. We ask this in Your Name, Lord Jesus. (Acts 4:13, 18-20) Amen
SUNDAY 13: O Lord, You hear the desire of the afflicted, You encourage them, and You listen to their cry. We pray today for Christians in Bang-ladesh – poor, vulnerable and despised but faithful to You. May they know Your provision for their needs and Your protection from those who seek to harm them. May they experience Your presence and Your power in their lives. As they boldly share the Gospel, please add to their number those who are being saved, and enable them to grow in knowledge and love of Jesus Christ, in whose Name we pray. (Ps10:17)
SUNDAY 20: Lord Jesus, we ask Your blessing on Your persecuted followers in many countries – those whom the world hates. May they draw comfort from the knowledge that You also were hated by the world without reason. May they find strength in remembering that You also were persecuted and that their suffering is for the sake of Your Name. May their lives shine with Your love, joy and peace, drawing others to You, even their persecutors. Help us to learn from their patient endurance, their forgiveness and faith, that their lives and ours will bring glory to You. (John 15:18-21)
