TODAY’S MISSION: CUTTING CARBON, INDUSTRIAL SIZE
Important policy and technology actions are transforming electric power generation and passenger vehicle Sectors. However, substantial progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions is being made in industrial engines and equipment -- heavy-duty engines, vehicles and equipment that are the backbone of the global economy.
This event will highlight how these sectors are reducing greenhouse gas emissions and evolving for the future. Current and future global policies and approaches for continued progress in these sectors will be discussed. Finally, a detailed look at how advanced renewable biofuels are low-carbon solutions today. challenge.

INTRODUCTION -- Meeting the Climate Challenge
• Solving complex problems requires many technology solutions.
• Sustained and proven progress today lowering GHG emissions and short lived climate pollutants is a key strategy.
• Strategies should be balanced between near term and longer term approaches.
• What technologies are working in the industrial sectors today and which can we expect tomorrow?
• How will these technologies contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions?
One out of Every Two Economic Sectors Relies on Heavy-Duty Vehicles, Equipment or Engines
to Get the Job Done
• Most energy-efficient internal combustion engine• Most operating range of any fuel type on a single tank • Available – extensive servicing, fuelling, repair network
• Proven, Reliable, Durable• Economical – acquisition, operation, resale- long term TCO
• Near-zero emissions performance • Low-carbon fuel capabilities – burn an array of blends of advanced renewable biofuels
For nearly all these sectors, Diesel is the technology of choice: WHY?
Challenge: How to grow the global economy and support prosperity while reducing emissions to cool a warming planet?
Solutions: No single technology will meet the challenge alone. We need an “all hands on deck” approach that relies on a variety of fuels and technologies that are ready to help today…and that solution includes diesel

Since its invention in the late 1800’s, diesel engines have evolved
dramatically. Building on its inherent energy efficiency, coupled with
unmatched power, durability, reliability and scalability, diesel engines
have expanded their role in the global economy.
The dominant global technology for goods movement,
construction and agriculture, diesel technology has met its
latest challenge; to achieve near zero emissions.
Expanding utilization of low carbon renewable fuels
establishes a clear future role for diesel power
Case Studies: How Advanced Technology will Help
Meet the Climate Challenge in the Industrial Sector
World population is expected to increase by 1 billion between 2030
More powerful and efficient farm tractors improve yields and reduce input. The greatest opportunities to reduce carbon emissions from farm equipment involve modernization of equipment and the expanded use of more efficient farming practices using connected machines and equipment, and use of renewable biofuels.
Over two-thirds of all farm equipment is powered by diesel
FARMING: Advanced Diesel Engines utilized in Autonomous Farming Operations
Access to drinking water and safe removal of wastewater are fundamental to quality of life.
Emergency services and public transportation are foundations for strong and growing cities.
Diesel engines are a primary technology used in back-up electrical generators, as industrial engines for pumping water and in service and work equipment and vehicles. Their reliability, power and performance and economical operation enable public service to thrive.
Essential Public Services
Diesel Supports Essential Services Across the Globe
202 diesel generators will be hard at work helping communities stay linked.
EMPOWERING VILLAGES AND
PEOPLE WITH RELIABLE AND
AFFORDABLE ELECTRICITY
Microgrids provide communities
across the globe with sustainable and
low cost power supply
“Today in terms of cost per kVA, flexibility and responsiveness, there is still no better source of standby power than a diesel generator.
In the near future, we are going to see more power generation from renewable sources, although for the foreseeable future, we see generators powered by diesel engines co-existing with renewable power generation technologies. As in the automotive industry, hybrid generators are going to become more common.
And in Africa, there is huge potential for microgrids, integrated local power grids where you might have solar panels, batteries, wind turbines and generators all linked together and capable of powering remote settlements on their own. This approach could be a very cost-effective way to help electrify Africa.”

Enhancing Mobility: Mass Transport
• Diesel technology is the primary power source for moving people in many parts of the world.
• Because of its energy efficiency and performance it moves more people in the most economical way. New technology clean diesel buses are near zero emissions.
• The newest generation of near-zero emissions diesel technology is also available in locomotives.

Delivering the goods
• Movement of raw materials to factories and finished goods to market requires efficient and reliable technology
• Trucks come in all shapes and sizes but are the workhorse of the global economy.
• The majority of medium and larger commercial trucks are powered by diesel engines.
In the U.S., three out four trucks are powered by diesel technology. The latest clean diesel innovations have reduced carbon emissions by 59 million tons and saved 5.8 billion barrels of oil since 2010
Diesel is expected to be the dominant powertrain driving advanced technologies to meet fuel efficiency standards that will eliminate 1 billion tons of carbon emissions by 2027.

Solar + Plug-in Hybrid + Clean Diesel = 25% boost in fuel savings
Cutting Carbon: Goods Movement- Trucks
Globally, Diesel is expected to continue to be the dominant powertrain for the foreseeable future in large trucks. Depending on location truckers have options of natural gas, propane, gasoline, Diesel.
In the future new options may become commercially available including hybrid, electric, Hydrogen and other alternative fuels for use in specific trucking segments, such as localized pick up and delivery or urban operations.
What is the Opportunity for Alternative Fuels and Electrification in Commercial Trucking?

It’s About More than Just C02Newest generation of Diesel Cuts Black Carbon
What Is Black Carbon?
Since 2007, heavy duty Diesel truck engines have near zero particulate emissions thanks to Advanced particulate filter technology.
Eliminating Diesel’s black carbon contribution is an easy task but relies on access to cleaner diesel fuel.
“More than two-thirds of the world’s road diesel is already ultralow-sulfur (maximum 15 ppm sulfur). This share is projected to grow to more than four-fifths under adopted policies in 2021.” – The

Clean Diesel = A Low Cost Strategy to Eliminate Black Carbon Emissions
…And Clean Diesel Is an Integral Technology to Get the Job Done
Summary
1. Industrial sectors – agriculture, construction, mining, goods transport, power generation –offer opportunities to reduce greenhouse case emissions and short lived climate pollutants.
2. Diesel engines, which are projected to be the prime source of power for these global industrial sectors well into the future, have transformed to near-zero emissions and are more energy efficient (lower CO2). The use of newer technology diesel engines is already delivering measureable and significant results to key sectors in North America and Europe.
3. To realize the fullest range of climate and clean air benefits, the use of cleaner diesel fuels which are increasingly accessible around the world is required.
4. Alternative fuels and other technologies may play an increasing role in some sectors in the future, depending on infrastructure availability, market acceptance and other factors. However, for most industrial sectors, Diesel will remain the technology of choice.
Dear World Leaders,
As you come together for the Climate Action Summit, meeting the global challenge of lower greenhouse gas emissions requires more than one government or one solution.
Our world runs on diesel. That makes diesel power a key part of the solution.
Real progress toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions from diesel technology of all types is being delivered today.
Let’s work together to make progress on the world’s biggest challenges that require many solutions. The new generation of diesel technology is one of them.
