Facts about Saumur Nestling in the heart of the Anjou vineyards, the medieval town of Saumur, nicknamed the pearl of Anjou, is a very scenic place with its magnificent turreted château overlooking the Loire Valley and old town stretching along the wild river. Surrounded by fortifications, the castle of the Dukes of Anjou is houses a decorative arts museum and a horse museum. It also offers a stunning panoramic view over the roofs of the town and the Loire River.

Below, the historic centre of Saumur is the perfect place for a stroll – along the narrow streets edged by old houses and around Saint-Pierre square where there are old timber-framed houses and a church containing stalls and tapestries. Worth seeing as well: the Notre-Dame-de-Nantilly Romanesque church, which contains a magnificent 16th- and 17th-century tapestry collection.

Saumur is known for being the city of horses and good wine. With 49,000 acres and 32 AOCs, this region is the reflection of a rich palette: dry or sweet whites and rosés, red wines of character and fine sparkling wines. A green and golden triangle, drawn from Montsoreau to the Puy-Notre-Dame and to Saumur, encloses not only some of the best views in the region but also some of the best tastes. This land of vineyards has its celebrities: Saumur-Champigny, the sweet Coteaux de Saumur, and the sparkling Saumur Brut and Crémant de Loire. Under the wing of the Minister for Health, Youth and Sport, the National Riding School is founded on the knowledge and experience of the ecuyers (Riding Masters) of the Cadre Noir who have rediscovered their ancestry at Saumur. Address of the Cadre Noir/Ecole Nationale d’Equitation (ENE): Avenue de L’Ecole Nationale d’Equitation, 49400 Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent

The history of WBFSH How did it start? When the level of sport started to increase in the late 1970’s and 80’s, and as the warmblood type began to develop into a more athletic horse, there was no connection between breeding and sport. Pedigree information on starting lists was lacking or completely absent. There was little to no co-operation and communication between individual studbooks and no exchange of information. The discussion of how to grow the recognition and visibility of breeding, breeders, and studbooks lead to the idea of developing a world studbook competition. HRH Princess Anne, who was the FEI President from 1986 to 1994, invited a group of people from the main European countries where the Sport Horse was starting to have a great economic influence to a meeting in Appeldoorn (Netherlands) on the 4th of September 1988. This was followed by a meeting at Buckingham Palace in December 1988 and Badminton in May 1989, to further discuss how to create a network of contacts, organise a young horse championship of the studbooks, what guidelines to set for the championships, and how studbook rankings could be produced.

It took three years of diplomatic efforts and logistical planning until the World Breeding Championship for Sport Horses (WBCSH) took place in Maastricht (Netherlands) in November 1992. This was not yet a young horse competition. The Hanoverian studbook won as a team, with 6 of the best horses of the year. Leon Melchior, the founder of studbook Zangersheide, and who bred the Olympic Champion of Barcelona 1992 Ratina Z, was awarded Breeder of the Year, and Ratina Z was named Horse of the Year.

On the 19th of November 1994, the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses was officially founded in Berlin/Germany. The first president to be elected was Gert Jan van Muijen (NED). HRH Princess Anne was the Federation’s first patron. At this time there were already 25 studbooks involved. The first World Breeding Jumping Championship at Zangersheide in Lanaken Belgium took place in September 1995 – pictured here is the cover of the program of this first WBFSH championship. After the success of the jumping championship it was decided to expand the competition into the disciplines of dressage and later also eventing. Today our federation has grown to over 75 studbook members in 34 countries on 5 continents.
