WELCOMEWelcome to Christ Church for the worship that begins the great three days, or the Triduum. Since the fourth century, with great devotion the church has honored the story of the night before Christ died, for it was then that he changed the meaning of the meal shared by God’s covenant people. In taking, blessing, breaking the bread, and giving it to his disciples as his body, all share in his suffering death and God’s raising power for forgiveness and life eternal. That night Jesus also gave a mandate, a mandatum, for which this day is named. He commanded his disciples to love one another as he loves us. To demonstrate this new commandment, Jesus washed feet as a household slave would do.

In our worship today, we share that ritual of humility as well as the meal that gives us life. You are invited to participate in the foot washing, removing your footwear before you come forward. First be washed by one of the clergy or another disciple; then you may kneel to wash another’s feet or return to your seat.

After the sharing of communion, the service concludes with the stripping of the sanctuary, preparing for the stark reality of Gethsemane, his arrest, and the cross of Good Friday, on which hung the Savior of the world.

Thank you for being present today; join us again for worship tomorrow and on Easter morning. You are welcome here.

Celebrant Let us pray. Holy God, source of all love, on the night of his betrayal Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment, to love one another as he loved them. Write this commandment in our hearts; help us to serve as Jesus served, and let him live in us, for he is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

PROCLAIM AND RESPOND TO THE WORD OF GODPlease be seated. The reader introduces our passage before reading

St. Paul Writes to the Church I Corinthians 11:23-26I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

At the conclusion the People respond, “Thanks be to God.”

The Gospel Story as told in The Kingfisher Children’s BibleThe Passover was drawing near. Everyone was busy, getting ready. Peter and John were sent into the city to prepare for the Passover meal. Jesus told them, “You will meet a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him, and when he reaches a certain house go in and say to the owner, ‘Where is your guest room?’ It is there that we will eat the Passover meal together.” Soon, Jesus and his disciples were sitting at the table. While the food was being prepared Jesus got up from the table, wrapped a towel around his waist and began to wash the disciples’ feet. Peter did not understand. He said, “You should not do this, Lord!” But Jesus went to each one in turn, washing away the dust and drying their feet with a towel. He said, “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord’ and that is what I am. But I am setting you an example. I have washed your feet, and now you must wash one another’s feet.” Then he took bread, gave thanks to God, broke the bread, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body.” In the same way he took the cup of wine, gave it to them, and said, “This is my blood of the new covenant which will be poured out for many, so that their sins might be forgiven. Whenever you eat and drink together, do this to remember me.”
