WelcomeWelcome to Templestowe Park Primary School where we provide a friendly, secure and encouraging environment for our students and the other members of our school community. We value highly the contribution made by every member of our school community.

Preparing students for a changing world is essential to a successful education. Our focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is paramount to our learning programs. Our Specialist Science Discovery program provides all of our students the opportunity to participate weekly Science lessons. Exciting use of technology is supported throughout the curriculum and is highlighted by our very own Templestowe Park TV program (TPTV).

Our team of professional educators and dedicated support staff take great pride in the standards of both our curriculum and extra-curricula activities. School Council has recognised the importance of maintaining the highest levels of educational expertise by providing extra funding for the on-going professional development of our staff.

Templestowe Park has a long tradition of parental involvement, both within the classroom and in other activities such as social events, specific project working bees and “special event” days.

We value the partnership that develops between our parent community and members of staff – it is this team approach to your child’s education that enables us to deliver excellence in children’s education.

Then there are the most important members of our school community – the students. Whether they are one of our new prep students or someone who has been with us throughout their entire primary school education, each child is treated as a very special individual. We take great delight in watching the students developing, celebrating the differences that each child brings to our school.

Templestowe Park is a great place for children, for teachers and for parents. We hope that you will soon feel very much a part of the school community.

Mark Roberts, Principal

Our SchoolTemplestowe Park Primary School was established in 1977 on a 3-hectare site in Church Road in Templestowe. The grounds are well developed with a very large playing area, including several sets of play equipment, netball and basketball courts, an outdoor learning environment and other activity spaces for our students. Future plans to re-surface the rear oval will further enhance the grounds.

The comprehensive curriculum emphasises the development of literacy and numeracy skills. Mathematics and English are taught as separate subjects, while other curriculum components are incorporated into the integrated aspects of the learning program. Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) are integrated into classroom activities, with notebooks and iPads in each classroom.

Templestowe Park employs specialist teachers to provide other learning programs in Chinese (Mandarin), Health & Physical Education, Visual Arts, Science and Performing Arts.

Facilities include a special precinct to ensure our prep students are welcomed into a safe, supportive environment to cater for their needs, a senior school centre, library resource centre, Discovery Room, Visual Arts room, Performing Arts room and well equipped middle school classrooms.

School Council The Department of Education and Training requires all schools to have a School Council.

This is a representative body, charged with the following responsibilities:

◊ Determining the general educational policy of the school

◊ Developing the school charter

◊ Reporting annually to the school community

◊ Approving and monitoring the school budget

◊ Developing the student code of conduct, and

◊ Generally stimulating interest in the school

Our School Council consists of the Principal, eight parent representatives, four staff representatives and two other community members.

As well, School Council operates several sub-committees, each having the responsibility for a specific aspect of the school’s operation.

These sub-committees are open to anyone who would like to participate in the decision making processes within the school, particularly anyone with specific expertise in the sub-committee’s area of accountability.

If you are interested in participating in the School Council process, either by joining a sub-committee or as a School Council representative, please contact the School Office.

Strategic Planning The Department of Education and Training requires all schools to undertake structured strategic planning. This involves spending time considering academic results, results of parent and staff surveys plus a range of other data and considering the direction of the school in the next three years. Specifically, this planning must address:

◊ School Profile

◊ School Goals and Priorities

◊ Curriculum Profile

◊ Codes of Practice for School Council, the Principal, Teachers and for interaction with the broader community

◊ Student Code of Conduct

◊ School Accountability Statement

◊ Budget Summary

School Council ensures this planning is fully incorporated into all policies and committee activities.

The Curriculum Templestowe Park Primary School provides a high quality, sequential education program, based on the Victorian Curriculum. Our curriculum has a strong emphasis on English and Mathematics and is tailored towards ensuring that every student is able to achieve to their potential, regardless of their ability levels.

Templestowe Park aspires to develop the ‘whole child’ by planning and implementing a balanced curriculum. This means that there is a strong emphasis on not only Literacy and Numeracy, but also Science, The Arts, Physical Education and Technology. The foundation to learning is student engagement and it is important to TPPS that we help our students develop a passion for learning while building upon their level of self-esteem and confidence.

Our curriculum places a strong emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy, with a comprehensive coverage of the following learning areas:

As well as the areas designated within the Victorian Curriculum, other programs operate within the Templestowe Park curriculum, including:

Students also have the opportunity to participate in a range of programs outside of the curriculum, including:

Information and Communications Technology Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a key component of the school’s curriculum. Each classroom is equipped with a “bank” of modern notebook computers that provide access to the school network, as well as the Internet and other software. In years 4, 5 and 6, students participate in the BYOD (iPad) program. Using the philosophy ‘It’s not about learning to use iPads but about using iPads to learn’, these tools compliment quality teaching and support the development of Literacy and Numeracy skills.

They are a great tool to not only access information quickly, but to also use features such as the camera, video and sound recording options to present or record what students know about a concept or topic, what they would like to know or what they have learnt quickly and efficiently.

While students currently bring their own iPad in Year 4, 5 and 6 as part of the ‘1:1 iPad Initiative’, students in all other year levels have access to school owned iPads and iPad minis as well as notebooks.

Notebooks and iPads are used to further develop skills associated with Literacy and Numeracy, presenting, researching and creating. A range of approved software applications and apps are made available to students.

Senior students use school hardware to produce episodes of TPTV (Templestowe Park Television). Students and parents then have the opportunity to view the student created shows.

Internet and Email access

The Department of Education and Training have an approved internet “cache” effectively, a “filtered” collection of internet sites that have met certain criteria in regard to their suitability for school students.

When students access the internet from the school network, they, in fact, access this cache. This means that they are almost certainly not able to see inappropriate internet sites. This cache is maintained and monitored by the Department on an ongoing basis.

Templestowe Park’s School Council has developed an Internet / Email / iPad agreement. This is written in language that is understood by students, and which must be signed annually by students before they can use an iPad or a notebook.

Reading Programs As indicated in our Strategic Plan and most other curriculum related documents developed by Templestowe Park, the school places exceptional emphasis on the development of literacy skills.

As part of this, the school offers a range of reading programs for the students.

Home Reading Program

The Home Reading Program focuses on Prep to 6 students. Students are able to choose from a wide range of books appropriate to their reading ability. The children are encouraged to take these books home and read in their own time. Home reading is a major component of homework and an opportunity to read with parents and siblings.

Reader’s Workshop Program

This program is designed for all students and focuses on reading for understanding (meaning) and discussion. Selection of books is carefully monitored to ensure that students are reading material that is ‘just right’ for their reading ability. Ongoing discussions in small groups are typically led by the teacher and students independently follow up activities. Motivating and engaging students in reading with a focus on comprehension is a key outcome in every classroom.

Reading Assistance Program

The Reading Assistance Program provides Year 1 and 2 students who require extra assistance to improve their reading and writing in a specially designed intervention program. Selected students receive intensive thirty minute lessons four days a week with a support teacher. The students work in small groups of no more than three other students and these special lessons are in addition to the regular literacy instruction in the classroom.

Toe by Toe

The Toe By Toe Reading Support program provides assistance for individual students from Grade 3-5 that have difficulty reading. In particular, trouble with decoding and reading fluency. The designer of the program chose the name Toe By Toe to signify that students make progress by the tiniest steps – one toe at a time when working individually with a reading coach.

◊ Donations from families as part of the annual School Council voluntary donation program

◊ The annual book fair that enables students to choose the books they wish to see in the school’s book collection

◊ Other “one-off” activities that have been organised to raise funds for our Library Resource Centre.

The Library Resource Centre Since the school’s establishment, Templestowe Park has valued its Library Resource Centre. During that time, it has evolved from being a facility that focused exclusively on books to one that provides access to a range of resources, including printed, audio visual and multi media resources.

The Library Resource Centre has been able to develop its collection through the allocation of funds by School Council plus a range of other fund raising activities, including:

Activities Outside the Classroom

Not everything at Templestowe Park occurs inside a classroom! There are a range of activities that students can choose to participate in and others that, whilst compulsory, are certainly very special events in the students’ time at our school.

Sporting Events

All students undertake Physical Education sessions with a specialist teacher every week. During these sessions, students are introduced to a range of activities, including the development of skills in a variety of sports and games.

In Grades 1 to 4, students participate in additional sports for one session per week.

During this time, students are broken up into groups to play games and sports against one another. This introduces students to many sports for the first time and has a very strong emphasis on participation ahead of winning.

In Grades 5 and 6, students are encouraged to participate in inter-school sports, against other schools in the local area. This is a terrific opportunity for children to represent their school in a sporting activity, whilst learning and developing their skills in that sport.

In addition, our senior students participate in:

If they are successful in any of these events, students could be selected to represent the school in district, zone, regional and ultimately, state championships.

Throughout the entire sports program, there is a great focus put on participation and each child performing to achieve their personal best.

As well as participating in sporting activities within school times, as outlined above, there are a number of sporting activities that take place outside of regular school time that have a very clear link to our school.

Our school has many basketball teams participating in a local basketball association. The teams are coached by parents from our school and train at our school each week.

7

◊ athletics days

◊ swimming carnival

◊ cross-country running event within our sports house structure

◊ golf clinic

◊ Hooptime (basketball)

◊ Tennis clinic.

Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) The Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) is designed to develop and extend the motor perceptual abilities of the prep students through a series of challenging sequential activities involving memory, balance, eye tracking and gross motor coordination.

All Prep students participate in this program. This is a program within the school that relies heavily on the ability for parents to support the teachers throughout these sessions.

PMP also provides a great opportunity for the prep parents to meet one another in the school setting and for these parents to be involved in their child’s first year at school.

Activities Outside the Classroom cont. Camps and Excursions

Our camps and excursion program provides our students with an even broader range of activities to support their learning program.

Every year level undertakes several excursions throughout the year, ranging from visits to local places of interest (e.g. Box Hill Hospital, the Greenery Nursery etc) through to more significant excursions such as our day trip to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat for Year Five and Six students.

We also operate a camping program for all students.

The current program is:

◊ Prep: Games and a BBQ after school

◊ Grade One: Dinner and a movie at school

◊ Grade Two: An excursion and dinner out of the school between 2:00pm and 8:00pm

◊ Grade Three: An overnight camp

◊ Grade Four: 4 days – Anglesea

◊ Grave Five: 5 days – Neerim (Gippsland)

◊ Grade Six: 5 days – Alexandra

Elective Programs

Whilst we focus on providing a strong core curriculum at Templestowe Park, we also recognise the need to provide opportunities for children to develop skills and knowledge outside of traditional curriculum areas. As a result, the school offers a range of elective programs – some undertaken during regular class time, with other activities taking place during lunch and recess breaks.

These elective programs include:

8

◊ Instrumental Music

◊ Chess (including inter-school chess)

◊ G.A.T.E. Ways

◊ Dance

◊ School Choir

◊ Art

◊ Drama Club

◊ Computer Coding Club

Prep Transition Program

9

The school has an outstanding Prep Transition program that ensures that our newest arrivals feel very comfortable within the school environment before their first day of school.

The program enables next year’s prep students to become familiar with the primary school routine in readiness for their first year at Templestowe Park.

This also gives the chance to meet other children from their year level, find their way around the school and get to know their teachers before the big day.

For more information, please speak to the Prep Transition Coordinator via the School office.

Activities Outside the Classroom cont. Visual Arts

Visual Arts is part of our core curriculum at Templestowe Park, however there are also some art activities that take place beyond the classroom programs.

The first Templestowe Park Primary School Art Show was held in 2005. This art show ensures that every child is able to display one piece of work along with professional artists from around the Templestowe community.

Another Visual Arts project is the annual Year Six legacy project, the first of which was completed in 2000. Each Year Six group completes one or more pieces of visual art which is presented to the school to be displayed in a prominent location.

It provides a permanent reminder of the students who passed through our school, while giving the former students something to look at on future visits.

Make sure that you look out for these pieces of art during your next visit to our school.

Performing Arts

In the same way that Visual Arts operates within the curriculum, there are a number of activities and electives that relate to the Performing Arts.

The major extra-curriculum activity in our Performing Arts program is the major school production and dance events.

Every second year, the grade five and six students will develop, rehearse and perform a school musical or drama. The choice of script is made to be appropriate for senior primary students and to provide every child with an opportunity to be in the production.

Extension and Support Activities.

At Templestowe Park, we recognise that students develop skills and knowledge at different rates and in different areas.

In response to that diversity, we have a number of extension activities that operate for a number of students. Extension programs are operated in Mathematics and for gifted and talented students. Some students are also offered the opportunity to participate in G.A.T.E. Ways – an independently operated education program that enables students to work in themed extension activities with children from other schools.

For students who need more intensive support, students are able to participate in the Reading Assistance Program and Toe by Toe.

Activities Outside the Classroom cont.

RRIPO

RRIPO stands for our school values: Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Pride and Optimism.

It is a pastoral care program that was introduced to TPPS in 2012 and is now an important part of our Positive Education program. RRIPO is a unique program and one that we are very proud of.

In RRIPO groups:

◊ Every student at TPPS from Prep to 6 is involved.

◊ Every class teacher, specialist teacher, the Principal and Assistant Principal are also involved.

◊ Every student in the school is allocated a RRIPO teacher who will care for them throughout their years at TPPS.

◊ Each fortnight for one hour, everybody moves into their RRIPO groups where they participate in a range of activities. Some groups may be playing sport, cooking in one of the kitchens, undertaking an art activity or having circletime where students have a chance to share any concerns they have or can raise any questions about school life and beyond.

◊ All activities have the purpose of promoting our school values and developing a whole school connectedness. Each activity must directly relate to a focus that the school identifies for the particular session.

◊ RRIPO groups focus on developing resilience, self esteem and a sense of belonging.

RRIPO groups are all about building relationships. It gives an opportunity for students to connect with other students outside of their grade level as well as another significant adult. At the end of the year we unfortunately say good bye to the grade 6 students in each RRIPO group while at the beginning of the following year we welcome new prep students into each group.

The Buddy Program

One of the most popular activities offered within our school is the Buddy Program, involving the Grade Five and Prep students.

During the first couple of weeks of prep, each child is assigned to one or more Grade Five students. It is the responsibility of the Grade Five students to look out for their buddies during recess and lunch breaks and during scheduled class time activities. The Buddy Program has benefits for both groups of students.

Clearly, the students have the benefit of having a big friend to look out for them. They know that they can ask questions and look for advice from their buddy whenever they need to.

From the Grade Five student’s perspective, they enjoy the responsibility of looking out for a younger friend. The relationships that are built often extend into Grade Six/Grade One, giving both children two years in which to enjoy one another’s company.

There are a range of events organised throughout the year, including excursions, lunches and other classroom based activities.

Out of Hours School Care Templestowe Park Primary School uses Camp Australia to conduct its Out of Hours School Care (OHSC).The OHSC program consists of three major components:

◊ Before School Care (from 7:00am each school day)

◊ After School Care (until 6:15pm each school day)

Parents may register their child(ren) in the OHSC program for a nominal annual fee.

Once registered, the child(ren) can make use of the services on either a regular or casual basis.

More details about this program are available from the school office or from Camp Australia.

Communication with ParentsTemplestowe Park prides itself on the way that all facets of our school community - the students, the staff and the parents interact with one another. The channels of communication are numerous, both formal and informal. Some of the key communication channels are discussed below.

Templestowe Park News

Our fortnightly newsletter is produced and shared with the school community every second Friday throughout the year. The newsletter can also be accessed via Compass or the school website. This newsletter provides information about the coming week as well as a celebration of the previous week’s achievements.

Compass

Compass is a school management system that not only improves the communication between home and school but also allows permission forms, payments and absences to be recorded and completed efficiently. Each family is provided with a Compass log in that will allow access from any computer or smartphone.

Grade / Specialist Websites and Blogs

Each grade level and specialist has their own specific website where information about the classroom program can be found. Information about homework, upcoming events, curriculum programs and areas of focus are just some examples of what can all be found on these websites.

School Website

The Templestowe Parks website serves many purposes.

Firstly and foremost, it has been designed as a celebration of what makes Templestowe Park a great place to be – the children, their work, their performances and their on-going development.

Secondly, it’s been designed to provide up-to-date information for the school community. Printed documentation often goes out of date very soon after printing whereas the website is more readily maintained as current.

Finally, the web site has been designed to provide the first glimpse of our school for parents who are considering schools for their child. We encourage members of our school community to recommend our website to neighbours, friends or family members who are working through the process of choosing a school.

To view our website, please visit us at www.templestoweparkps.vic.edu.au

Parent Teacher Nights

There are two scheduled opportunities for parents to meet with teachers each year.

The first of these occurs in February each year. This evening tends to be more of a “get to know you” for both parties – an ideal opportunity for teachers and parents to discuss their students, show how their year might unfold, special learning requirements, etc.

The second of these opportunities occurs in June each year. This is a meeting involving the parents teacher. School Reports will have been prepared and made available prior to the conversation, so the student’s progress will be discussed.

These are not the only opportunities to meet with teachers to discuss students’ progress - teachers are always happy to make an appointment to meet with parents at a mutually convenient time.

Student Progress Reporting

Teachers will provide a written assessment of the students’ progress twice each year. The first of these will be presented during the last two weeks of term two. The other will be prepared and published on Compass during the last week of the school year.

The report format has recently been revised to comply with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s requirements.

The student’s progress is also shown graphically, compared to their level of achievement at the same stage

during the previous year and the expected level of achievement for all students in Victoria.

These summary report cards will be supported by more detailed comments regarding the student’s progress and achievements, as observed by the classroom teacher and, where appropriate, the specialist teachers.

Parent Involvement

Templestowe Park prides itself on both the opportunities for parents to take an active part in school life and the degree to which parents take up those opportunities.

The relationship between the students, staff members and parents is a critical component in developing an environment of student well-being and in their intellectual and emotional development.

Staff members who are able to interact with both the students and their parents can develop a more meaningful relationship with the family.

Parents who take a more active role in their children’s education through participation in school activities, develop a better understanding of the way their child learns and have the opportunities to celebrate achievements as they occur.

Children who see both their teacher and their parents within their school environment have the opportunity to see the value that each place upon the child’s education and growth.

Parents in the Classroom

Many parents become involved in activities within the classroom. For many, this involvement starts during their child’s first year and continues throughout their entire primary school period.

Parents are able to take part in various activities including:

Prior to parents being involved in the classroom program, it is a requirement that all parents complete a Parent Helper program. These programs are conducted by experienced teachers at the start of each school year and aim to better equip parents to utilise their skills. Any adult who assists in any program at TPPS will need to show a valid Working With Children card.

Assemblies

The school assembly is one of the great features of our school. The theme of our assemblies is always to do with the celebration of achievement by our students. In many instances, the assemblies are facilitated by the students themselves, with limited involvement by the staff.

The assemblies are held every second week from 2.45pm. Parents and other family members are very welcome to attend any assembly. If you would like to attend an assembly, simply arrive at our school hall a few minutes before 2.45 pm on the designated day. The dates for our assemblies are clearly located in our newsletter and on the calendar within Compass.

Parent & Friends Association

Our Parents and Friends Association (PFA) was created with two key objectives in mind:

◊ To provide a social context for parents and friends of the school to enjoy being part of Templestowe Park◊ To undertake activities that raise money for the school.

The PFA meets on a monthly basis and conducts a range of activities for students and for parents throughout the year, including:

Templestowe Park is truly fortunate to have the support of such an active group of parents and friends, with tens of thousands of dollars having been provided for school facilities, playground equipment and other resources.

Community Projects

Templestowe Park is located within a large school ground, containing a range of playground areas, ovals, asphalt courts and other more passive areas.

Whilst most maintenance tasks are completed by paid contractors, occasional “special effort” community project events are held. Many families participate in these occasions, with a great chance to get to know other parents whilst creating a more enjoyable school environment for the students and staff.

Parent Involvement cont. School Council and its Subcommittees

As discussed earlier in this publication, School Council is an officially convened body of parents and staff, responsible for the direction and policy of the school.

Through the sub-committee structure, parents have the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process, without needing to commit to being a full member of School Council.

Membership of a School Council sub-committee requires a commitment of one to two hours per month.

No specific qualification or experience is required to be involved - only that you are a parent of a Templestowe Park student who is interested in being part of this very important process within the school.

Security, Safety & Health There is no more important consideration within the Templestowe Park community than the health, safety and security of our students and staff.

Student and Staff Security

The school maintains strict policies concerning visitors to the school, even those who are regular classroom helpers, School Council members, etc. who spend considerable time at the school.

Students who need to arrive at and depart from school at times other than normal school times are also required to sign in or out at the office with their parent or other responsible adult.

Whilst these processes may seem to impose extra time on parents who need to get to and from appointments, the security of the members of our school community means that this requirement is not negotiable.

Student and Staff Safety

The safety and security of students and staff is paramount. The school believes that everyone who enters our school environment has the right to leave without any negative impact on their health and safety.

Codes of behaviour have been designed to minimise the risk of injury. The school facilities are regularly monitored to ensure that any damage or maintenance tasks are attended to as soon as possible.

Staff members are encouraged to demonstrate good safety behaviours and to encourage their students and colleagues to do likewise.

Student and Staff Health

Templestowe Park is committed to working with students and staff to maintain good physical and mental health.

Each student will be involved in various wellbeing programs incorporating the philosophies of the Kids Matter program and the school’s PERMAH model (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment and Health). TPPS openly states it would like the students to ‘be the best they can be!’

The school also embraces a “Fresh Five” policy where the students are encouraged to eat fresh fruit and vegetables prior to going outside for a play. As well, our Physical Education program promotes exercise and a sensible diet as being a critical part of caring for the student’s health.

Sun Smart

Templestowe Park is proud to be an accredited SunSmart school, as part of The Cancer Council Victoria’s SunSmart program.

Students are taught to be sun-smart, applying sunscreen and wearing sun protective clothing. During first and fourth term, the school operates a “no hat, no play” policy, where students who are not wearing an approved school hat are not permitted to play outside.

Our playground structures have all been covered with appropriate shade covering to ensure a safe play environment for our students.

Templestowe Park outsources our school canteen to a registered provider. The canteen operates five days a week and provides many healthy options for our students. The canteen does not sell soft drinks or lollies. All food items are required to meet the standards of the Healthy Life program.

School Facilities

Templestowe Park is fortunate to be located in a large and spacious school ground. This has enabled School Council to develop the grounds to include a variety of playground areas, including:

◊ Two school ovals

◊ Year-specific playground equipment

◊ Asphalt courts for netball, basketball, bat tennis and other sports

◊ Shaded areas (under trees and/or shade sails)

Our school buildings are a combination of permanent and relocatable classrooms and other learning spaces. Our prep grades are clustered together with good access between rooms, allowing interaction between the grades for a range of activities.

The other grades are also clustered together in either our main building or our new building.

All classrooms have access to an interactive screen and wireless internet connection.
