I was happy, sing in my easy chair watching the Astros win another game on their march to the playoffs, when out of nowhere my wife asked, Do you realize that this year we have our high school 40th year reunions? Now why did she have to go and bring that up? I dont really like thinking about the fact that I graduated 40 years ago. Its thinking about things like that, and looking at mirrors, that make me feel old. And the worst part about feeling old is that old age in our society has but one consequence: irrelevancy. We reach a certain age and we become irrelevant and extraneous. We find ourselves the peripheral wall decoraons of society instead of those whose insight and understanding make them essenal and of value. It calls to mind the psalmists prayer, For You are my hope; O Lord God, You are my confidence from my youth. By You I have been sustained from my birth; You are He who took me from my mother s womb; My praise is connually of You Do not cast me off in the me of old age; Do not forsake me when my strength fails (Psalm 71:5,6,9). I dont want my life to be reduced, by reason of age, to fading pictures in a scrapbook. I don t want all of my sentences to begin with, I used to ….” I want to be like Caleb and looking towards the next great challenge full of confidence and faith (Josh. 4:10-12). I dont want to remember sermons and lessons I had success with in years past, I want to have a beer min- istry in Gods word in the days ahead. I have the same prayer as the psalmist when he said, O God, You have taught me from my youth, and I sll declare Your wondrous deeds. And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, Unl I declare Your strength to this generaon, Your power to all who are to come. For Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You?(Psalm 71:17-19). I hope all of us are of the mindset that God is not finished with us. Just as important, I hope that we are as steady and confident as Caleb, determined that we are not finished with His work. I am encouraged by Pauls statements about the value and importance of older men and older women in the church (Titus 2:1- 5). This generaon can be blessed because God has preserved and connually strengthens those who may be forced to admit that it has been more than a few years since high school graduaon. This generaon also needs to know about Gods love and His power and they need Chrisan role models who exhibit hope and confidence in uncertain days because of an unswerving faith in God. In Gods kingdom, none are irrelevant except by personal choice! DC Brown

Welcome!

Not Ready For The Pasture!

I was happy, sitting in my easy chair watching the Astros win another game on their march to the playoffs, when out of nowhere my wife asked, “Do you realize that this year we have our high school 40th year reunions?” Now why did she have to go and bring that up? I don’t really like thinking about the fact that I graduated 40 years ago. It’s thinking about things like that, and looking at mirrors, that make me feel old. And the worst part about feeling old is that old age in our society has but one consequence: irrelevancy. We reach a certain age and we become irrelevant and extraneous. We find ourselves the peripheral wall decorations of society instead of those whose insight and understanding make them essential and of value. It calls to mind the psalmist’s prayer, For You are my hope; O Lord God, You are my confidence from my youth. By You I have been sustained from my birth; You are He who took me from my mother’s womb; My praise is continually of You … Do not cast me off in the time of old age; Do not forsake me when my strength fails (Psalm 71:5,6,9). I don’t want my life to be reduced, by reason of age, to fading pictures in a scrapbook. I don’t want all of my sentences to begin with, “I used to ….” I want to be like Caleb and looking towards the next great challenge full of confidence and faith (Josh. 4:10-12). I don’t want to remember sermons and lessons I had success with in years past, I want to have a better min-istry in God’s word in the days ahead. I have the same prayer as the psalmist when he said, “O God, You have taught me from my youth, and I still declare Your wondrous deeds. And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come. For Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You?” (Psalm 71:17-19). I hope all of us are of the mindset that God is not finished with us. Just as important, I hope that we are as steady and confident as Caleb, determined that we are not finished with His work.
