Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, regresó de las orillas del Jordán y fue conducido por el Es-píritu al desierto,�donde fue tentado por el demonio durante cuarenta días. No comió nada durante esos dí-as, y al cabo de ellos tuvo hambre.�El demonio le dijo entonces: "Si tú eres Hijo de Dios, manda a esta piedra que se con-vierta en pan".�Pero Jesús le respondió: "Dice la Escritura: El hombre no vive solamente de pan".�Luego el demonio lo llevó a un lugar más alto, le mostró en un instante todos los reinos de la tierra�y le dijo: "Te daré todo este poder y el esplendor de estos reinos, porque me han sido en-tregados, y yo los doy a quien quiero.�Si tú te postras delante de mí, todo eso te pertenecerá".�Pero Jesús le respondió: "Está escrito: Adorarás al Señor, tu Dios, y a él solo rendirás cul-to".�Después el demonio lo condujo a Jerusalén, lo puso en la parte más alta del Templo y le dijo: "Si tú eres Hijo de Dios, tírate de aquí abajo,�porque está escrito: El dará órdenes a sus ángeles para que ellos te cuiden.�Y también: Ellos te llevarán en sus manos para que tu pie no tropiece con ninguna pie-dra".�Pero Jesús le respondió: "Está escrito: No tentarás al Señor, tu Dios".�Una vez agotadas todas las formas de tentación, el demonio se alejó de él, hasta el mo-mento oportuno.�

Filled with the holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert�for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.�The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."�Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"�Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single in-stant.�The devil said to him, "I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish.�All this will be yours, if you worship me."�Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.'"�Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,�for it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,'�and: 'With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"�Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, 'You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.'" When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time. �


“Así como por la desobediencia de un solo hombre, todos fueron constituidos pecadores, así también por la obediencia de uno solo, todos serán constituidos justos” (Rm 5,19)�

�

El diablo atacó al primer hombre, nuestro padre, por una triple tentación: lo tentó por la gula, por la vanidad y por la codicia. Su tentativa de seducción tuvo éxito puesto que el hombre, dándole su consentimiento, estuvo desde entonces, sometido al diablo. Lo tentó por la gula enseñándole el fruto prohibido que estaba en el árbol e invitándole a comer de él; le tentó a través de la vanidad diciéndole: “Seréis como dioses”; al fin le tentó a través de la��codicia, diciéndole: “Conoceréis el bien y el mal” (Gn 3,5). Porque ser codicioso no es tan sólo desear dinero, sino también toda situación ventajosa, desear más allá de lo comedido, una situación elevada... El diablo fue vencido por Cristo, quien fue tentado de manera totalmente parecida a la que fue vencido el primer hombre. Igual que la primera vez, le tentó a través de la gula: “Di que estas piedras se conviertan en pan”; a través de la vanidad: “Si eres el Hijo de Dios tírate de aquí abajo”: a través del deseo violento de una buena situación, cuando le enseña todos los reinos del mundo y le dice: “Todo esto te daré si te postras y me adoras”... Es preciso hacer resaltar una cosa en la tentación del Señor: tentado por el diablo, el Señor le ha replicado con textos de la Santa Escritura. Hubiera podido echar a su tentador al abismo sólo con la Palabra que él mismo era. Y sin embargo no recurrió a su poder poderoso, tan sólo le puso delante los preceptos de la Santa Escritura. Es así como nos enseña soportar la prueba, de manera que, cuando los malos nos hacen sufrir nos veamos impulsados a recurrir a la buena doctrina antes que a la venganza. Comparad la paciencia de Dios con nuestra impaciencia. Nosotros, cuando hemos soportado injurias o sufrido ofensas, en nuestro furor tendemos a vengarnos tanto como nos es posible, o bien amenazamos con hacerlo. El Señor, carga con la adversidad del diablo sin contestarle de otra forma que con palabras pacíficas.�

"Just as through the disobedience of one person, Adam, the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of one person, Jesus Christ, the many will be made righteous" (Rm 5:19)�

Our ancient enemy, the devil, rose up against the first human being, our ancestor, in three temptations. He tempted him by gluttony, by vain glory and by avarice. And he overcame him when he tempted him, because he subjugated him through consent. He tempted him by gluttony when he showed him the forbidden food of the tree, and told him: "Taste it." He tempted him by vain glory when he said, "You will be like gods." He tempted him by adding avarice when he said, "knowing good and evil." Avarice is concerned not only with money but also with high position. We rightly call it avarice when we seek high position beyond measure… But the means by which the devil overcame the first man were the same ones which caused him to yield when he tempted Christ. He tempted him by gluttony when he said, "Tell these stones to become bread." He tempted him by vain glory when he said, "If you are the son of God, cast yourself down." He tempted him by an avaricious desire for high position when he showed him all the kingdoms of the world, saying, "I will give you all these if you will fall down and worship me"… But there is something else we have to consider too in this temptation of the Lord's, dearly beloved. When the Lord was tempted by the devil, he answered him with the commands of sacred Scripture. By the Word which he was, he could have plunged his tempter into the depths. He did not reveal the power of his might, but he only brought forth the precepts of Scripture. This was to give us an example of his patience, so that as often as we suffer something from vicious persons we should be aroused to teach rather than to exact revenge. Consider how great God's patience is, how great our impatience. If we are provoked by injuries, or by some attack, influenced by rage we either take vengeance for ourselves to the extent of our ability, or we threaten to do so. The Lord endured the devil's opposition, and he answered him with nothing except words of meekness.�
