Kick in after a behind

After giving “all clear” the Umpireshould position himself on the majoraxis, 15m from the kick off line.

NB: A defender can only kick the ball inonce the goal umpire has finishedwaving the flags

Signalling

Videos Examples of many aspects of the rules are on the same

page as this presentation – these were produced by the

NFL and there are minor differences between the two

junior leagues – notably SMJFL is a 10m distance before a

bounce must be taken (not 15) and the ball is kicked back

into play after a behind is scored in the SMJFL rather than

going back to the middle as per the NFL video.

Spirit of the LawsIt is the Spirit and the intention of the Laws of AustralianFootball (L.O.A.F) that a free kick shall be awarded to:

Ensure that a match is played in a fair manner; Provide to a player, who makes obtaining possession of

the football his or her sole objective, every opportunity togain possession;

Protect players from sustaining injury; and A player who executes a correct (modified) tackle that

results in an opponent failing to dispose of the football inaccordance with these laws.

Common sense approach

Club Volunteer Umpires are a match official of the CLUB TEAM. No different to the Coach,

Assistant Coach, Runner, Trainer, Umpire Escort etc.

So ALL communication (including questions) must be directed to the Team Manager and/or

Club Secretary. Not the SMJFL Umpiring Department.
