I'm delighted to have the opportunity to introduce you to the higher education prospectus for the University Centre at Wakefield College. Whether you're considering studying with us for the first time as a home or international student, or one of the growing number of our current or past students who are interested in progressing on to one of our higher education courses, we hope that this prospectus will give you the information you need to help you to make one of the most significant decisions of your life.

We have 40 university-level courses across a range of subjects which are validated by Teesside University and the University of Huddersfield. We're an alternative higher education provider and we put you, the learner, at the heart of everything we do.

Embarking on undergraduate study locally instead of travelling further afield is a choice which an increasing number of students are recognising as both attractive and practical.

We ensure that our teaching meets our core values of employability, affordability, and excellence and we strive to offer outstanding resources, such as our new-build projects and excellent facilities, which will enhance your real-world learning experience.

Many of our courses are designed in conjunction with employers, which reaffirms our commitment to place the high-level skills which industry needs at the forefront of delivery.

At the same time, we're keen to support you in achieving your academic potential in every way, and ensure that contact time with tutors is maximised.

As a result of this combined focus on skills development and support, we have a proud history of achievement, with many results improving year-on-year and alumni progressing to a broad range of destinations, from postgraduate study to work within high-profile companies.

You're warmly invited to come and visit us to find out about higher education choices, talk to our staff and students, and get a feel of what we have on offer, we are sure you'll be impressed. I look forward to seeing you soon.

EmployabilityCore values of University Centre at Wakefield College - Employability, Affordability & Excellence Before I enrolled on the FdA Web Design course, I was

working for a local web design agency and didn’t think I needed to study at university level. Since then, I’ve graduated from the foundation degree and secured two jobs. I really think there’s a place for studying a higher education course regardless of your knowledge or experience.

What makes the FdA so different from other courses is the subject knowledge of the tutors. Everything I learnt from my foundation degree helps me in my day-to-day role but most importantly, it's given me the ability to manage my own learning.

I work in an ever-changing industry with new tools, techniques, and best practices changing every week and it can be difficult to stay on top of them all. The module on self-managed learning really helped me develop and understand my own learning style."

Student finance can consist of grants, loans, bursaries and/or allowances, and is intended to help you with tuition fees and living costs (maintenance) which are the main types of cost you'll have while you’re studying in higher education. You should note that if you’re studying on a part-time basis you’re only entitled to loans for tuition fees, not for living costs.

What are student loans?(full and part-time students)If you’re a full-time student, you’re entitled to loans for tuition fees, and living costs. This is money you will have to pay back, but don’t worry as these aren’t like bank loans and you only start paying it back once you have finished your course. Part-time students are also entitled to tuition fee loans.

What are student grants?(full-time students only)A student grant is money for living costs that is given to you if you meet the eligibility criteria, for example, if your household income falls under or between certain thresholds. Unlike loans, this doesn’t have to be paid back if you complete your course.Special Support Grant: If you’re a full-time student you may get a Special Support Grant instead of a Maintenance Grant if you get or qualify for Income Support or Housing Benefit. The amount you get is the same as the Maintenance Grant. Please note: Higher education student support is limited to a first undergraduate degree or other first HE qualification, with just a few exceptions. Go to: www.gov.uk/studentfinance for more information and to complete the application form.

Repaying your loanIf you’re a full-time student you’ll be due to start repaying your loan in the April after you complete or leave your course. If you’re a part-time student you’ll be due to start repaying your loan in the April after you leave your course or the April four years after the first day of your course, even if you’re still studying, whichever comes first. You’ll only start making repayments when your income is over the threshold of £404 a week, £1,750 a month or £21,000 a year. If your income falls below £21,000 a year, repayments will stop and only restart when your income is over £21,000. You can also make additional voluntary repayments to Student Loans Company at any time which will reduce your balance earlier.

Repayments are based on your income, not what you borrow or the number of student loans you have.

Additional SupportDisabled Students’ Allowance: This provides help towards the additional costs that a student may face as a result of their disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition, or specific learning difficulty.Childcare Grant: This grant helps with childcare costs for children under 15, or under 17 if they have special educational needs.Parents’ Learning Allowance: This is for full-time students with children to help with their learning costs.Adult Dependants’ Grant: This is for full-time students in higher education with an adult who depends on them financially.

Student support Your personal tutorThe key figure in guiding you through your studies is your personal tutor. You’ll get to know them pretty well during your time at the University Centre, with regular meetings to plan and review your personal, professional and academic progress. These discussions will ensure you’re getting the support you need to succeed.

SafeguardingOur safeguarding policy ensures that everyone attending activities in the College does so in a safe and secure environment. It sets out the steps we take to protect vulnerable adults and young people and the procedures we would use to deal with any issues. The policy is published on the College website and the staff and student Intranet.

Counselling and welfare supportSometimes it’s good to talk, and our counselling service is staffed by professionals who are on hand when problems arise. The service offers one-to-one support to students and a safe place to talk in private and get things in perspective. It isn’t advice, and you won’t be judged but helped to find your own solutions. If you would like to make an appointment, leave a message on our 24-hour answering machine: 01924 789226, phone or text: 07713 391716, 07713 391717 or email [email protected]

Additional Learning Support ServiceThe service has helped many students to achieve their potential by ensuring they have received the right kind of support to meet their specific needs. Ofsted inspectors commented on the College’s ‘excellent levels of support’ in March 2014. We would recommend that you discuss any disability or additional support need as soon as possible, so that we can make any reasonable adjustments necessary and give you advice and guidance. For example, if you need help in exams, such as extra time, a reader or a scribe, it’s important that you tell your tutor in good time so they can make the necessary arrangements for you. All HE students with disabilities need to apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance as it funds the support we are able to give you during your time at College. DSA is not a means-tested grant and we will support you with the application process. We 'll also help you to plan the extra support you need and advise your tutors on how to make the right adjustments for you. Please telephone 01924 789585 or email Zoe at [email protected] before you enrol to ensure that support is in place at the start of your course.

Careers and educational guidanceIf you’re not sure which HE course to choose, our Careers Advisers can help. Once you’ve started your HE course with us, you can use the services of our specialist HE Careers Adviser who will help you to decide on your next step, whether that’s further study, training or employment. We have all kinds of careers information on education and the job market both online and in our libraries, and you’ll have access to computer-aided guidance too. If you want to make an appointment, phone 01924 789113/789301 or email [email protected]

LibraryPlus servicesOur students benefit from extensive learning facilities in our libraries including LibraryPlus Discover - a research portal offering 24/7 access to full-text books and journals, plays and theatre productions, allowing you to choose when and how you want to study.

Students’ UnionThe Students’ Union represents you within College, and provides you with a voice and social activities. It’s student-led and elections are held annually for student officers to form the Students’ Union Executive committee. Getting involved with the Union can be a fulfilling experience, and allows you to develop useful skills, increase your self-confidence and will look great on your CV.

We have a long history of providing first-rate support for our students to ensure they get the most out of their studies. The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) gave us the highest rating for our management of both standards and quality and at our latest Ofsted inspection in March 2014 they praised us for our “excellent levels of support”. Our priority is putting students at the heart of everything we do. The following pages detail some of the services we offer to our students.

We aim to be a fully inclusive organisation, eliminating discrimination, promoting equality and embracing diversity in all that we do. We celebrate the rich variety of people from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds who make up our student community. We've put in place policies, training and procedures to make equality and diversity a reality for the whole College community.

Equality & diversity

How we demonstrate our commitmentFrom the outset, at the induction, staff are clear about our expectations of them in terms of supporting equality and celebrating diversity. This commitment is further underlined in policies, planning and staff training.College ensures that all policies are analysed to address any negative impact in relation to all nine protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010: sex, race, disability, marriage and civil partnership, sexual orientation, religion or belief, pregnancy and maternity, gender reassignment and age.We are firmly committed to equality objectives which will make a real difference in the classroom. Planning in the classroom is expected to maximise opportunities to promote diversity and foster good relationships among all groups of students. Regular training and development initiatives support staff in making this a reality. In keeping with our strategic objectives we aim to:• connect with our area in order to raise

aspirations, particularly in deprived areas• continue to play an active part in

initiatives across the Wakefield district to eliminate discrimination and promote equality and diversity.

Measuring our progressThe effectiveness of these policies is monitored through a comprehensive range of measures, which involves regular collection, reporting and analysis of staff and learner data on the basis of a range of demographic factors. A summary of this is available on the College website. An annual report on equality and diversity, including monitoring data, is considered by the College’s Board of Governors.

Students’ responsibilitiesStudents, too, have a responsibility to promote and embed equality and diversity. The College Charter sets out what students can expect from us, and the Student Agreement, which everyone must sign, details minimum expectations of students in relation to equality and diversity. Students can get actively involved in this by becoming one of the representatives on the Students’ Union responsible for promoting equality and diversity.

Care leaversWe are part of the HEART (Higher Education Access Rewarding Transforming) partnership and share their commitment to supporting care leavers who wish to aspire, apply, enter and succeed in higher education. This commitment seeks to facilitate an increase in the number of care leavers entering higher education, raise awareness of the needs of this group of students, and enable care leavers to make the most of their time in higher education and to complete their courses successfully. To support this commitment, we are providing a bursary to help students overcome barriers and support access and achievement. See page 23 for further information.

The College promotes equality and diversity very well and enables students of all abilities and backgrounds to engage in College life and flourish.

Your guide to qualifications What do they mean?Foundation degreesFoundation degrees are university-level qualifications which combine academic study with work-based learning. They are designed in partnership with employers, but are validated and awarded by universities. A full-time foundation degree is usually two years long, and designed to be slightly different in character from a traditional three-year honours degree, with an emphasis on subjects which are directly relevant to specific sectors. Students often spend some time in the workplace and some time in class, which makes it easier to find work in that sector at the end of the course. As well as meeting skills shortages, foundation degrees are designed to make higher education more accessible to people from lower-income backgrounds and those who are already in work. After completing your foundation degree you can progress to a top-up course and achieve a honours degree. This usually involves a year of full-time study.

HNDs (Higher National Diplomas) and HNCs (Higher National Certificates)These qualifications differ from foundation degrees in that they are awarded by Edexcel rather than a university. After you’ve completed a HNC, you can progress to study a HND. Completion of a HND can lead on to studying a top-up course which would allow you to achieve a honours degree. Top-up courses usually involve a year of full-time study.

Top-up degreesEquivalent to the final year of an honours degree programme at university. Students who already possess a Level 5 qualification can use one of these programmes to top-up to an honours degree in the shortest possible time. For example, a student with a HND or foundation degree in business can obtain an honours degree in business after one year of further study.

Higher apprenticeshipsThe Government has dedicated significant funding to the ongoing development of higher apprenticeships. They offer UK learners access to strong career progression routes to higher-level employment. They combine respected BTEC or Edexcel qualifications, on-the-job training, and industry endorsement from employers, leaders, and professional bodies. They offer a clear path to employment and a practical route to higher education qualifications.

Higher apprenticeships are developed in consultation with leading industry employers to meet their future skills needs and are endorsed by professional industry bodies such as the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE), Society of Biology, Royal Society of Chemistry, PRCA, and the Royal Aeronautical Society.Apprenticeships are a practical alternative to gaining a degree-level education, and can also be used as a route into a full honours degree.Source: Pearson: Work Based Learning

I’ve really enjoyed my time here at Wakefield so far, which is why I decided to continue studying here and top up my degree.

University Centre at Wakefield College has great opportunities for local university-level study because they offer affordable fees, high-quality teaching, friendly staff, and regular support and contact with the lecturers. My course also has smaller class sizes than those at university, which means that I can participate and get more involved with my learning.”

I’ve studied at University Centre at Wakefield College for three years now. I chose to study here because the campus is close to home and I’d heard from friends already at the University Centre that the staff were very friendly and approachable. Throughout my time at Wakefield, the staff have been very supportive and have always been available to help.

I first came to University Centre at Wakefield College to study a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dance, and chose to continue my study with a HND. I’m now in the second year of my course and I hope to further my knowledge by studying the BA (Hons) Performance Industries course. After I’ve graduated, I want to get a job as a dancer on a cruise ship.

The best thing about my course is that I get to study a wide range of styles and I have freedom to explore what I want within individual projects.

I decided to continue my study here at Wakefield rather than going to university because I really like the relaxed atmosphere and the tutors are really supportive and are interested in what you do!"

I’m currently in my first year on the course but it’s already opened doors and I’ve learnt so much.

University Centre at Wakefield College is great because it’s professional but has a relaxed and adult environment.

My favourite part of the course is working collaboratively with fellow students and teachers. The HND is really hands-on and a big part of the course is the performance element.

The advice I’d give to people thinking about taking this course is to consider what you want to gain from study. As long as you’re dedicated you can get so much out of this course!"

I decided to do the HNC Diploma in Mechanical Engineering to increase my knowledge of the industry I work in. I work for Craven Fawcett, part of Group Rhodes, one of Europe’s largest original equipment manufacturers in its field. I am a Business Development Executive and recognised that this course would be beneficial to my role and give me a better understanding of the industry, which would in turn help me to provide a better service to our clients and increase potential business opportunities.

My employer has been extremely supportive and flexible whilst I have been studying and the support I have had from my tutors and the University Centre has been very important and really helped me.”
