Pastor’s Corner

Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you,

for the glory of God. Romans 15:7

Welcome!

Maybe you grew up Catholic. Maybe you think of yourself as Catholic.

Maybe you haven’t been to church in a while. Or, you are worried that you won’t be welcomed here.

And maybe it feels awkward and scary to take that first step. Questions.

Doubts. Yearning, but not sure for what. We get it.

We’ve been there. Now we are here.

Maybe God is calling you, too. Just as you are.

Welcome home.

Join us for a “Thank you Celebration”

In Honor of... Sr. Mary Margaret

and Sr. Lana Sunday, June 3

After the noon Mass in Kavanagh Hall

Celebrate Pentecost at St. James

Our parish is made up of many people of different nations and cultures; let us rejoice in the fact that all of us, from different parts of the world, are one in Christ Jesus.

Over the past years, the Lector Ministry has encouraged the members of St. James to live out Pentecost by reading two line petitions in the language of their ancestors and dressed in their native, ancestral or traditional clothing at Masses on Pentecost.

If you speak a second language, we encourage you to participate at this year's Pentecost celebration on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20. We are looking for 4 different languages at each Mass. Please email Samantha Pierce with the Mass and language of your choice at [email protected]

To proudly portray our cultural diversity, we encourage all St. James parishioners to dress for Pentecost liturgy in their ancestral dress. From Highland Kilt to Hindi Sari, be part of the joy of this liturgical celebration!

Dear Friends and Families,

Today we remember and honor our mothers, living and

deceased, and those women that have served as a

mother to us at various times in our lives. The nurturing

and sacrifices that they have made in placing the needs

of their children ahead of their own desires has helped to

shape us into the persons we are today.

We need only to look to our Blessed Mother as the

perfect example of a mother. During this month of Mary,

let us call upon her love to assist us in our faith journey

as she guides us to her Son and eternal life. Rediscover

the power of the rosary as we meditate on the life of her

Son.

The Memorare: Remember, Oh Most Gracious Virgin Mary.

That never was it known, that anyone who fled to thy

protection, implored thy help, our sought thy intercession

was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto

you, Oh Virgin of Virgins, my mother. To thee I come,

before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. Oh Mother of

the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy

mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.

Wishing you blessings on this mother’s day.

Ministry to the Incarcerated and Their Families

“I was in prison and you visited me... Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:36,40

No family wants to see one of its members go off to prison. Mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, brothers, sisters, and children are devastated when their loved one is incarcerated. Families who have a member in a state or federal prison or county jail are a hidden and isolated group. As they try to deal with everyday life on the outside, their fear of stigma means they suffer a silent sentence of their own and their needs go unnoticed.

We are continuing to organize a mass for the families of those currently or formerly incarcerated and anyone who knows someone that is or has been incarcerated. There will be time after mass for hospitality and a chance to connect with others that may be in a similar situation. The mass is scheduled for Saturday, May 19th at 2:00 pm. Hospitality will be in Kavanagh Hall im-mediately after Mass.

We are inviting any formerly incarcerated or family member to help advise us about what may make this event meaningful. If you would like to participate in an advisory role, please give us a call.

Catholic Q & A

Q: As part of its ministry, the St. James Choir beautifully proclaims the words of 2 Corinthians: "We walk by faith, and not by sight..." What does the Catechism Of The Catholic Church teach us about this multifaceted gift from God called faith? A: A personal and ecclesial act, faith is placed at the very heart of the elemental structure of the catechism. Included are the four pillars of the catechism: the baptismal profession of faith; the sacraments of faith; the commandments are at the heart of the life of faith; the prayer of the faithful, the Lord's Prayer. Part One of the catechism is a good starting point to explore the many layers of our faith. Presented in this essential section are insights and examples of living faith, among them: Moses in exodus amid the challenges of the ancient faith of the covenant; Abraham and his unflinching faith; and the pure example of faith that is Mary. Also in this first section of the catechism are the Church's dogmas of faith, which are presented as the entrusted heritage of faith called the "depositum fidei", (the sacred deposit of faith). These are discussed, as are Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Church, timeless keys in maintaining, practicing, and professing the faith.

Call and discover God’s purpose for your life.

Gospel Reflection This Sunday's Gospel is known as the "priestly prayer" of Jesus. The entire passage is Jesus entrusting us to the Father. "When I was with them I protected them ? I guarded them," Jesus says. He asks his Father, "Keep them in your name." In this prayer of Jesus, we see the paradoxical tension of our life as Christians in the world. He anticipates struggle for the believer. He describes it in strong words, words that could even appear frightening to the believer. "I gave them your word, and the world hated them." Not only that, but with our eyes on eternal life, we "do not belong to the world." And yet in the midst of those realities, Jesus doesn't take us out of the world. On the contrary, "as you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world." Christians live in this tension daily. The call of Jesus often defies nice, neat categories. We uphold justice as virtue yet are invited to love our enemies. We offer gifts and generous hospitality to others while being reminded of the value of temperance. We are called to teach the truth of right and wrong without losing sight of the beam in our own eye. It can be difficult to find the balance in our own lives, and a Church that preaches moral perfection can easily fall under scrutiny when it falls short. In the midst of these complications, Jesus offers a message of hope. He is well aware of the contradictions into which he sends us, and his Father will equip us accordingly. "Consecrate them in truth." "Keep them from the evil one." Jesus does not abandon us to the tensions of our time but remains near at hand by the grace alive in his Church.

Everyday Stewardship

In the Church, we observe a liturgical calendar that takes us through the life of Jesus and highlights fundamental doctrines of our faith.

Starting with this Sunday, our observance of the Easter Season continues for one more week until the celebration of Pentecost.

While many outside of the Church only see Easter as a one-day celebration, we celebrate for an entire season, much like we do during Christmas as well. Of course, this calendar only serves to remind us and point to great-er realities.

We are not called to be more generous at Easter or Christmas than we are on other days. We do not choose to love more during one time of the year. The fact is that Jesus is alive right now and at all times is calling us to give of ourselves.

When we make an intentional decision to follow Jesus and adopt a stewardship way of life, we commit ourselves to this journey 365 days a year. We are an Easter people at all times. The high and low points of our journey are not tied to a liturgical year, but instead to our own experiences of life and shortcomings.

A season or holiday may make it easier to have a giving attitude, but we need to do the same when little around us is pointing us in that direction.

It is sometimes when few are paying attention that love and generosity are most needed. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Father, you have taught us to overcome our sins, by prayer, fasting and works of mercy. When we are discouraged by our weakness, give us confidence in your love. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. – Amen.

Dear Parishioners, We are so proud of our 4th Grade Religious Education Teacher Debbie Williams-Stiffler and her Girl Scout Troop #2205 from Beryl Heights Elementary school. They have created a new program with the Redondo Beach Police Department. This program is called “Kid Kits.” These kits will be placed in the back of the RBPD squad cars. Each ‘Kid Kit’ will have toys for babies through the teen years. Items include Lovies (sewn by the girls them-selves) for the babies, art supplies, cars, stuffed animals, Legos, journals, fidget spinners, action figures and more. The idea is to bring a little comfort to children facing stressful situations. When a child is involved in one of these stressful situations, an officer will open the “kid kit” and allow that child to pick a toy to help comfort them while the situation is being handled. The child will get to keep that toy. Troop 2205 has sold nuts and cookies for two years to help fund the toys.
