5

Loving God, thank you for your forgiving love.

What do YOU do to ‘make up’ or ‘reconcile’ with others?

6

Sacrament of Reconciliation

Christ is with us and we share in God’s mercy and forgiving love

Sacrament of Healing/Gift of Grace

We are forgiven through the ministry of the

church = Bishops or Priests

7

ABSOLUTION = Pardon from sins

Priest says: “I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

We say: “Amen.”

8

FORGIVENESS IS:

A SIGN OF

1. GOD’S FOR US

2. OUR FOR OTHERS

9

Praying Together

God, our loving Father, you send us the Holy Spirit.

Help us forgive one another

as you forgive us. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

10

After Jesus died, he was raised from the dead. He went to his disciples and said,

‘Peace Be With You.’

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help us to share the peace of Christ with others.

Our First Reconciliation Prayer Service

Gather

Sing

Listen to God’s Word

Quietly think about our sins

Our Father

12

Examination of Conscience

We spend quiet time praying and asking the

Holy Spirit to help us know how we have not

lived as children of God and followers of

Jesus.

This helps us to name our sins and to tell God

we are sorry.

13

Examination of Conscience Do I spend time in prayer? Do I pay attention and listen at Mass to God’s word? Do I speak God’s name respectfully? Do I respect my parents, teachers and other adults? Do I care for my health and follow safety rules? Do I treat other people fairly and with kindness? Do I share what I have with others or am I greedy? Am I truthful? Do I lie to get out of trouble or get someone else in

trouble?

14

First Reconciliation – The Rite

Greeting Your parents introduce you to

the priest.

Make the sign of the cross together.

15

First Reconciliation – The Rite

Confession

Tell your sins to the Priest. He will

never tell anyone what you talk

about. He will listen and remind you

how much God loves you.

16

First Reconciliation – The Rite

Penance The Priest will give you something to say or do that shows you are sorry for and want to make up for our sins. We say yes and promise to do our penance as soon as possible after celebrating the sacrament.

17

First Reconciliation – The Rite We pray the “Prayer of Sorrow” (“Act of Contrition”)

to show we are truly sorry for our sins. We can pray in any words. It is called ‘An Act of Contrition’

18

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.”

19

First Reconciliation – The Rite

Absolution

God forgives us our sins through the words and

actions of the priest in the sacrament of

reconciliation. He does this through the ministry of

the church. After he prays that prayer, we say,

‘Amen’, showing that we believe that God has

forgiven our sins.

20

Praise of God and Dismissal The priest sends us forth to glorify the Lord by our lives.

We say, ‘Thanks Be To God’. Silent Prayer in our Pew before leaving church We think about what the priest has told us and when we are ready, we pick up our Certificate and then go out into the world.

“Short Break”

Gather in Church Children will gather on steps with Fr. Jim Parents seated in pews with Reconciliation Books.

CHILDREN: Blessed are you, O God of all creation. By baptism, you called each of us by name. From the day of our baptism, you us on the path to this day.

PARENTS: We are blessed to journey with our precious children as they learn to share your mercy in First Reconciliation. It is through your Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit, that we pray our children will always come to you.

CHILDREN and PARENTS: Send the Holy Spirit to help us. Help us to make good decisions. Help us to say that we are sorry. Help us to forgive others. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
