WELCOME PARENTSThe 2nd grade teachers welcome you to an informational meeting
about what goes on at Rivera Elementary.
Rivera Mission Statement:
Our mission, in partnership with parents, and the community, is to promote academic
excellence and to develop responsible citizens, problem solvers, and life-long learners.
INTRODUCING THE 2ND GRADE TEACHERS….

EXPECTATIONS FOR OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM Students need to be one behind each other with their hands
behind their back at a voice level 0 while walking in the hallway. The students need to be very careful while playing at recess. Students need to follow the cafeteria expectations at all times.
They need to wait in line quietly and get their food. They need to sit down at the next available table, and talk quietly to their table peers.
Students need to try to use the restroom when the class takes a class restroom break. We have designated times when the class uses the restroom. The students need to be at a voice level 0 while using the restroom.
During dismissal, they need to wait quietly for their ride to get here.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Each classroom has come up with a list of expectations that the students thought would be appropriate for the classroom. The lists are hanging up in each classroom.
However, the main expectations are: No talking when the teacher or presenter is
talking Be respectful to the teacher and classmates No running Participate in every activity or lesson No bullying
OUR SCHOOL USES CHAMPS
C- Conversation level (level 0: no talking, level 1: whisper, level 2: partner/group work, level 3: presenting voice, level 4: outside)
H- Help: If the students need help with what they are supposed to be doing. They would either raise their hand or ask a buddy, etc.
A- Activity: What the students are doing at that time. M- Movement: The students can either get up and get some
water or they need to sit down. No running at anytime. P- Participation: What the students should be doing and how
they should be doing it. S- Success: If the students follow the expectations, then they
will have success!
CHAMPS
WHAT ARE THE STUDENTS LEARNING IN MATH? Math: Rivera is incorporating a “Math Workshop” model in the
classroom. Math Workshop consists of an opening, explore time, and a closing. We also use Investigations. Investigations is a math resource that teachers use to support student learning.
What the students will be learning this year in 2nd grade: 3 digit addition and subtraction Place value to 1,200 Comparing numbers Problem solving (UPS check) Measurement using inches and centimeters Geometry- different attributes of shapes Money
WHAT ARE THE STUDENTS LEARNING IN READING? Reading: 2nd grade incorporates books with lessons to teach
reading strategies. What the students will be learning this year in 2nd grade: Make connections to what their reading (does this remind
them of something that has happened to them, something that has happened before, or something that they have seen or read before)
Make inferences Authors purpose How to monitor their own comprehension Elements of stories (setting, characters, sequence, summary)

year in 2nd grade: Characteristics of a scientist Changes of physical properties of Matter How to read the weather Natural and manmade resources The Water Cycle Living Organisms- Food Chains
WHAT ARE THE STUDENTS LEARNING IN SOCIAL STUDIES? What the students will be learning this
year in 2nd grade: Landmarks Government functions and leaders Locate places on maps and globes Contributions of historical figures Producers and Consumers
REMINDERS Please have your students here before 7:50am. If the students need to eat breakfast, please
have them here earlier than 7:50am. The students need to bring their homework
folder and planner back to school every day. If your child is getting home differently one day,
please let the teacher know. If you have any questions or concerns, call or
email your child’s teacher. We allow students to bring snack if you want to
provide them something healthy.
This is going to be a wonderful year of learning, growing,
confidence, and readiness!!
