August Dance Instruction
Our dancer in-structor for August will be Monica Lung, who returns to teach the inter-mediate lesson in the East Coast Swing. Monica began teaching dance at the age of 16. She is an ex-perienced compet-itive dancer,
coach, and choreographer for all levels and all styles of ballroom dancing. On Wednesdays you can find Monica teach-
ing the Indianapolis Seniors at the Starlight Ballroom and in the spring she teaches the Hendricks County Special Olympics for an exhibition at the Ball-room Bash, which is a fundraiser for Special Olympics. In August, Monica takes her dancers to compete in the Fort Wayne Dancesport Special Olympics competition.
Both beginning and intermediate dance lessons are available only WITH paid admission to the dance. Please, no video recording of the lesson without permis-sion of the instructor.

February 2019 Volume 59, Number 2 A Word from Our President
Hello to all our great dancers! Half of 2019 is now past and the second half will fly by as it does each year. I’m happy to report we’re on pace to have a profitable year. We really appreciate our newest members, but are also glad for all of you who fill up the dance floor every Sunday evening.
On Friday, July 12th, Roger and Amy Greenawalt and Bill Woodward
staged their event of the year, the Big Ballroom Bash, which so many of our members support. Some mem-bers performed dance routines, others helped by training and dancing with Special Olympics students, and still others made donations to the Special Olympics organization. Roger, Amy and Bill have been doing this great event for the past 24 years. So, the very next time you see them, give them a big “high five” for all the time and effort they put into this great an-nual tradition.
Once again, I was not let down on our special Sunday for the month. Our Roaring 20s party was hot! The only thing that might have made it hotter would have been for us to turn off the air conditioning, I thought, - how the heck could dancers have had any fun without air conditioning 100 years ago? It is always fun to see everyone dressed up for our special events, and of course, I have to men-
tion the food all the great cooks in this club bring to share. It makes my mouth water just remembering those not-to-be-resisted desserts. When I die, I hope I am right in the middle of eating dessert!
The month of August brings two spe-cial evenings. First, we dance at the State Fair on Saturday, August 3rd. Then on August 25th, we will be at the Indiana Roof for Homecoming, stepping out on that beautiful floor to the music of the Sentimental Journey Dance Band. Remember, there will be no dance at Starlite that evening, so be sure to get your tickets for the Roof ahead of time.
I’m going to end with a request: Please, please do not be tempted to mess with the thermostat in either of our ballrooms at Starlite. This time of year, it is hard for the air conditioners to keep up. If you believe there’s an issue, please tell Jane Perry at the front desk, or let Darrel Trexler, Ben Davis or me know. Note to self and you: If the blue light is on and you can see it from pretty far away - the air conditioner is trying to cool down the ballroom.
Hope to see you on the dance floor soon.
Dave

MY CDC MARILYN CLOUTIER
Hi All! I started dancing by virtue of
three things: my mom’s tenacity as I
was growing up in get-
ting me to dance lessons
for eight years, my Dad’s
musical ability (piano),
and some proclivity for
dancing that I had as a
teen. My parents began taking ball-
room lessons with six other couples
when I was a teen, and both Daddy and
Mom would practice steps with me.
Although all these things made for on-
ly a very basic introduction to dance,
the memory stayed with me over the
years when I was doing very little
dancing. After I divorced and was
working on a Master’s degree at IU-
PUI, I started dancing with fellow stu-
dents after class on Wednesday nights
and took a few whirlwind lessons from
Chris Ford. I was rehooked!
Soon after retiring from nursing and
teaching in Terre Haute in 2009, I built
a condo in Plainfield, made the move
and found Starlite and you lovely peo-
ple -- there are precious few places to
dance in Terre Haute! I soon joined
Showtime Entertainers and we enter-
tained at nursing homes and such. The
routines were neat and the costumes,
one for each dance, were terrific. I re-
learned how to learn routines -- just
commit the steps to muscle memory. I
would have the costume on, be lined
up and ready to do the number, and ask
Karen Lewis, our leader and choreog-
rapher, “How does this dance start?”
But as soon as the music began and I
took the first step, it all kicked in!
Drove Karen crazy, though!
Although this blonde really just wants
to have fun at this point in her life, I
have been taking lessons from Monica
Lung off and on for the past 18
months. Still, I can only get just so se-
rious, much to my teacher’s chagrin, I
am sure. I prefer the Latin dances,
which somehow seem less serious. I do
adore the flow of the nightclub two-
step; it brings out a balletic aspect in
me from childhood I didn’t know ex-
isted anymore.
I have a son who lives in Terre Haute
with his family. His wife is a nurse,
and there are two granddaughters, both
into dance and music. The older girl is
a beginning drum major for her band;
the younger is just starting French
horn. By the time you read this I will
have returned from a Norway cruise
and side trip to St. Petersburg, Russia,
of Hermitage and Catherine Palace
fame. Real Opposites! Turns out my
sweet spot is where mountains meet
sea - that’s where I br-ea-the. Other-
wise, to stay relevant, I volunteer at a
horse therapy stable and at the hospital
in Danville. I single-hand my 21 foot
sailboat at Eagle Creek during boating
season, and do water
aerobics or cardio clas-
ses four days a week at
the Plainfield Recreation
Center. I dance with
some of you on Wednes-
days with Indy Seniors,
in addition to the Sunday nights at
Starlite.
To all of my dance partners, a big
thank you. You make it possible for
me to do what I adore—move to mu-
sic!
