Hospitality & Culinary Arts SHSM 2011-2012 Slide 3 A Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry-approved specialized education program in Hospitality and Tourism for secondary students. SHSM allows students to focus on knowledge and skills that are of particular importance in the Hospitality and Tourism industry. Students will obtain certifications recognized in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry, as they work towards meeting the requirements for their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Students who graduate with a SHSM designation in Hospitality and Tourism on their diploma are prepared for success in the postsecondary destination of their choice, whether it be apprenticeship training, a college or university program, or the workplace. Slide 4 Every SHSM in Hospitality and Tourism must include the following five components: A defined bundle of 8 to 10 Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits. Sector Recognized Certifications and Training courses/programs. Experiential Learning Activities within the sector. Reach Ahead experiences connected with your postsecondary pathway. Development of Essential Skills and work habits required in the sector, and use of the Ontario Skills Passport (OSP) for purposes of documentation. Slide 5 Slide 6 8 12 bundled credits Certification / Training Experiential Learning Ontario Skills Passport Reach Ahead Opportunities School / Work Slide 7 8 12 bundled credits Certification / Training Experiential Learning Ontario Skills Passport Reach Ahead College 8 12 bundled credits Certification / Training Experiential Learning Ontario Skills Passport Reach Ahead Apprenticeship 8 12 bundled credits Certification / Training Experiential Learning Ontario Skills Passport Reach Ahead School / Work 8 12 bundled credits Certification / Training Experiential Learning Ontario Skills Passport Reach Ahead University Specialist High Skills Major Slide 8 4 Hospitality and Tourism major credits that provide sector specific knowledge and skill: e.g. TFT3C, TFH4E, HFA4M, CGG301 or grade 12 business or science course. 3 other credits from the Ontario curriculum, in English, Mathematics and Science or business studies in which some expectations are met through learning activities contextualized to the Hospitality and Tourism Sector. 2 cooperative education credits that provide authentic learning experiences in a workplace setting, enabling students to refine, extend, apply and practice sector specific knowledge and skills. Two Additional Smart Serve Safe Food Handling Slide 11 Slide 12 SJA Culinary Arts molinaro Experiential Learning Activities Slide 13 Depending on your destination after graduation, whether it be heading into the workplace, attending university or college, you must take an opportunity to explore your destination. For example: Take a tour of the post-secondary institution of your choice. Job-shadow for more than one day. Compete in a skills competition. Slide 14 Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) has identified the Essential Skills that people need for life, learning and work. Essential Skills are foundational skills that enable people to perform tasks required in their jobs and to participate fully in the workplace and in the community. Slide 15 As a SHSM student you will use the OSP to: Help identify and gather evidence of your skill. Plan further skill development Have a point of reference in order to match your skills and work habits with your strengths and interests. Ease your transition from school to post secondary program or occupation. Slide 16 When I told my parents about this program they were very happy that I was starting to plan my life and consider a career path. I am now thinking about going to college as well as apprenticing for a local company. Student, Windsor My training has provided me with greater confidence in the kitchen and has made me even more enthusiastic to further develop my skills in the culinary field. The best experience I've had. I have found what I love. Nothing is better than that. As a SHSM student, in Hospitality and Tourism, we are fortunate to get industry recognized certifications such as First Aid, CPR, WHMIS, Food Safety and Customer Service Training. This is great because it will help me to get a better job in the hospitality industry. Also, in the post secondary program that I am applying to after graduation, you need these certifications. Student Slide 17 Graduate with a SHSM seal of designation on your secondary school diploma. Earn a Specialist High Skills Major designation on OSSD transcript. Gain valuable industry specific work experience and knowledge. Establish relationships and networks in the industry. Obtain industry approved certifications. Slide 18 Students who graduate with a SHSM can look forward to improved prospects after graduation because of the recognition of and support for the SHSM framework content from a variety of representatives from the hospitality and tourism sector, apprenticeship training programs, colleges, and universities. Slide 19 Talk to your hospitality teacher and guidance counselor and express your interest in the program.
