When you think about the month of March, do thoughts of
St. Patrick's Day come to mind? There is a lot more to
March than corned beef, parades, and green beer. There
are other holidays during the month. As we march into
March, entertain your brain with some fun facts about our third month.
First of all, March was not always the third month. For the ancient Romans, it was the
first month of the year and was named after Mars, the god of war. This could go a long
way toward explaining some of the fierce weather that can occur in this month and the
familiar saying that “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.”
March is a month of opposing forces. It's warm enough for rain one day and cold enough
for snow the next ~ but this can be laughed off in the face of brighter days ahead. The
sight of the first crocus is cause for celebration! March is an ideal time to reflect on the
opposing facets of ourselves. For instance, why do we sometimes give freely and other
times seem a bit stingy? Or why do we sometimes face a situation with a sunny disposition
while at other times we have a gloomy outlook? March is a two-faced month, and it invites
us to examine our two natures as well.
The two birthstones for March are aquamarine and bloodstone.
The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua,
meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea. This gemstone was
believed to protect sailors, as well as to guarantee a safe
voyage. The serene color of aquamarine is said to cool the
temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and levelheaded.
Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the
color usually is more intense in larger stones. This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but
also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique.
The second birthstone for March is bloodstone, dark-green jasper flecked with vivid red
spots of iron oxide. This ancient stone was used by the Babylonians to make seals and
4
amulets and was believed to have healing powers — especially for blood disorders. It is
sometimes called the martyr's stone as legend tells that it was created when drops of
Christ's blood stained some jasper at the foot of the cross. Generally found embedded in
rocks or in riverbeds as pebbles, primary sources for this stone are India, Brazil, and
Australia.
The official March flower is the daffodil, better known locally as the
jonquil. It’s one of the first flowers to bloom as spring draws near, making
it the flower of rebirth, along with other meanings such as friendship and
respect. Its traditional sunny yellow color makes it the perfect cheerful
flower for celebrating the end of winter.
March Holidays and Observances
The most well known holiday of the month is March 17th, St. Patrick's
Day. Parades are held in many major cities in honor of St. Patrick's
Day. Many people celebrate by eating a meal of corned beef and
cabbage and by drinking lots of green beer.
In the northern hemisphere, the spring equinox occurs with the first day
of spring falling on March 20th or 21st.
Also worth noting is that daylight savings time begins on the
second Sunday in March. Don't forget to "spring forward" by setting your clocks
ahead one hour.
Easter is March 31st this year.
5
Historic Events in March
Many major events happened during the third month of the year. Here are four historical
events that took place in March.
o The Boston Massacre took place on March 5, 1770.
o Paper money was issued on March 10, 1862 in the U.S. for the first time
o An act of Congress created the first United States National Park (Yellowstone) on
March 1, 1872.
o The Star Spangled Banner was made the United States National Anthem on March
3, 1931.
Patrick O'Reily wasn't feeling too good so he went to the doctors. The
doctor ran some tests and came back to tell O'Reily, "I can't find
anything wrong with you, Patrick. It must be the drink."
O'Reily shrugged and answered, "Don't worry about it doc. I'll come back
when you're sober."
May you always walk in sunshine.
May you never want for more.
May Irish angels rest their wings right
beside your door.

March President’s Article
I have been asked a number of times how we ended up choosing Lake Hammock
Village as our winter residence. I always respond that from the very first time we drove
through the front gate, we “knew” this was the community in which we wanted to buy a
home.
Perhaps it was the cleanliness of the well-kept houses, or the beautifully manicured
lawns and gardens or the size of the park that made us feel this was to become our
Florida home. Perhaps it was the resident re-sale agent who kindly took us around to
look at houses, even though it was the end of his work day. But, now after having the
pleasure of wintering here for the past six years, I now realize that it is really the people
who make this such a special place.
It is obvious to recognize the people who put in credible effort into making Lake
Hammock Village an active, fun place to live. Hopefully, as HOA President I have and
will continue to thank them for their time and talent in organizing special events and
regular activities. The role of Park Manager is a difficult one as there always seems to
be so many directions pulling at the same time and all have to addressed. Both
Managers I have known truly care about this community and I appreciate their efforts.
But what I have come to realize is that it is the unnoticed, quiet acts of kindness that
make our community special. It is the couple who take grocery bags with them on their
daily walks and pick up garbage and dog droppings so that our park is cleaner and
appealing. It is the person who anonymously tried to fix an outdoor Christmas
decoration for a less able resident and ended up replacing it with a new one. It is the
couple who every night can be seen quietly crossing through the garden to deliver a hot
dinner complete with dessert to the next door neighbor. It is the many people who
regularly visit our residents in the hospital or rehabilitation centers, so that they know
someone cares. It is the person who offers to drive someone to appointments or contact
family members so they know what is happening.
These are but a few examples of what goes on every day in Lake Hammock Village. To
all of you who pay-it-forward with your acts of kindness, allow me on behalf of all of us,
to thank you for everything you do and for making our community a special place to be.
“ Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of
kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.”

If you wondered where your sweetheart was on Valentine's Day, she could have been at
the Lake Hammock Village Fashion Show and Luncheon. Over one hundred ladies were in
attendance to view the fashions selected from BonWorth, modeled by eight of our own
LHV ladies. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who helped with this event. It
is impossible for us to personally name all of you, for we wouldn't want to leave anyone out,
but thank you to the models, who did an excellent job on the "runway", to the generous
people who donated all the door prizes, to our kitchen help and servers, who managed to
serve everyone, including dessert, in less than an hour, to the ticket sales people, to those
who helped with traffic detail, to the bakers for the cakes and the strawberry preparers,
and to all the others who made our fashion show a success. A special thanks goes out to
BonWorth and Shirley Reese for providing the beautiful outfits for our ladies to model.
We hope you enjoyed this event as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you.

LAKE HAMMOCK VILLAGE SPRING YARD SALE
It’s coming. Get ready. Saturday, March 16th from 8:00 – 12:00.
Yard Sale Co-ordinators Jerry Butler (248 887 0965) and Lee Emery (585
330 6328) respectfully request that you consider volunteering to make the Yard Sale
another success.
We need help with food sales (coffee & donuts, baking, hot dogs), taxi drivers and traffic
control.
Once again we call upon all the fabulous Lake Hammock Village bakers to make the bake
sale successful. Please bring bake sale goods to the Clubhouse by 4:00, Friday March 15.
The Bake Sale is open to residents on Friday night from 6:30 – 7:30p.m.
The cost is $3.00 per carport to hold a yard sale. Jerry or Lee will be around to collect
the fee on Friday, March 15th.
At the conclusion of the Yard Sale, Lighthouse Ministries will collect any leftover items
you wish to donate. Please put your unwanted items at the end of your driveway for pick-
up.
Signup sheets can be found in the Clubhouse or contact Jerry or Lee. The Yard Sale is an
important event which generates revenue for the HOA. Success depends on the willingness
of our residents to get involved and help. It’s a great way to promote the sense of
community for which Lake Hammock Village has always been known.
We thank you in advance for making this the best Yard Sale we’ve ever had.

A man was blissfully driving along the highway when he saw the Easter Bunny hopping
across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the Bunny, but unfortunately
the rabbit jumped in front of his car and was hit. The basket of eggs went flying all over
the place.
The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the
road and got out to see what had become of the Bunny carrying the basket. Much to his
dismay, the colorful Bunny was dead. The driver felt guilty and began to cry.
A woman driving down the same highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and
pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong.
"I feel terrible," he explained. "I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny and killed it. There may
not be an Easter because of me. What should I do?"
The woman told the man not to worry. She knew exactly what to do. She went to her car
trunk and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead Bunny and sprayed the
entire contents of the can onto the little furry animal.
Miraculously the Easter Bunny came to back life, jumped up, picked up the spilled eggs and
candy, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped on down the road. 50 yards away the
Easter Bunny stopped, turned around, waved, and hopped on down the road. Another 50
yards, turned, waved, hopped another 50 yards and waved again!
The man was astonished. He said to the woman, "What in Heaven's name is in your spray
can? What was it that you sprayed on the Easter Bunny?"
The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. I t said: "Hair
spray. Restores life to dead hair. Adds permanent wave."

Last Spring my wife, Caroline and I were standing in front of our
house in LHV. She said how quiet and peaceful it was. It sure is
relaxing, I replied. She looked up at the sky, the white clouds,
stars and half moon and she said, “sure looks nice an peaceful up
there”. Six months later she passed away. I know she went up to
heaven. So, I am alone, thinking back to her words was my
inspiration. In memory of her I sat down and wrote this poem.
Walter Paulovske
Our Peaceful Sky
Look up and see our beautiful sky
So blue and white and pleasing to the eye
At times we may find danger there
For it was not meant to disturb that peaceful air
Mother nature can be calm or rough
And can destroy all your dreams with just one puff
Is she our friend or foe?
What happened to our peaceful sky?
The sun shines bright and the air is clear
So in our hearts we have nothing to fear
An eclipse passes once a year
And we feel fear for darkness is here
Rain, thunder and lightning appear now and again
But not to stay so we can see
How peaceful the sky is as was meant to be
If you look up and are lucky I am told
At the end of a rainbow may be your pot of gold
Thanks to our peaceful sky
Walter entered this poem into a poetry writing contest. He was chosen to have it published in an
anthology book as well as having it entered in the contest.

An Irishman, by the name of O’Malley proposed to his girl
on St. Patrick’s Day. He gave her a ring with a synthetic
diamond. The excited young lass showed to to her father,
a jeweler. He took one look at it and saw it wasn’t real.
The young lass on learning it wasn’t real returned to her
future husband. She protested vehemently about his
cheapness. It was in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, he smiled.
I gave you a sham rock.

Activities in Lake Hammock Village
Dominoes
Chickenfoot Dominoes is a
fascinating domino game which is
played in our clubhouse on
Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm.
The game begins in a cross format from the opening
double, so that there are initially four free ends.
Dominoes are played with touching ends matching in
number as usual. Doubles are played crosswise, and
after a double is played the next three plays must
be next to the double. These are spread out slightly
like the toes of a chicken's foot, forming three new ends of the layout. The object as
usual is to be the first to play all your dominoes.
Men’s Poker
A group of men gather for a friendly game of
poker on Monday & Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm.
Bring your nickels, dimes, & quarters and
try your luck.

Bingo
Every
Thursday night you
can find a loyal
group of Bingo
players gathered in
the Clubhouse
trying to get the
chance to yell
“BINGO”. You need
to arrive by 6:45 to
purchase your cards and Bingo begins at 7:00 pm. The
more players we have the more money
you can win plus have a good time.
New Activity
We will now be playing Euchre in the
clubhouse on Sunday nights at 7:00 PM.
Single players and couples are always
welcome.
It was a Ladies Only Night in the All Blonde Bingo Hall.
The night had been pretty boring, not one single
person had a BINGO all night. The last game was up
for grabs, with a huge bingo prize of $3,500 in the
pot. The game drags on and on, and finally a number
was called and no-one shouted Bingo. The frustrated
caller gets up and says: "I've just called every darn
one of these 75 balls out of this machine and nobody
has a Bingo? Just what number are all you ladies
waiting for?" All together, 412 blonde ladies shouted:
"FREE SPACE!".
