CNP JOINS WHMG ANNA PRACTICE Dawn Macke, certified nurse practitioner (CNP), has been work- ing in collaborative effort with Dr. Matthew Vasko and the WHMG Anna Practice staff, seeing and treating patients of the practice. As a CNP, Macke is an experienced registered nurse (RN) who has additional education and training in the specialty area of family medicine. Dawn started with Wilson Health in 2005 as a regis-tered nurse. After a few years in Acute Care at the main hospital campus, she joined the Anna Family Practice where she worked as an RN for Elissa Martin. Dawn completed her CNP degree from Maryville University, in St. Louis, Missouri. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call the office at (937) 394-2900.

DAISY AWARD RECIPIENTS Anita Bornhorst, RN, and Jeff Emrick, RN, were selected as the recipients of the fourth quarter 2015 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.Anita and Jeff worked together to make contact with a patient who had failed to show at the appointed time in Same Day Surgery. They tried reaching the patient through several outlets because he was diabetic and NPO (nothing by mouth) since the prior evening. Finally, connecting with a son, who lived out of state, he called the squad to check on his father. The son called Wilson Health a half hour later and thanked Anita and Jeff for their efforts in contacting a family member because when the squad arrived his father was found unconscious. The patient returned to the hospital for the initially scheduled procedure 5-weeks later and thanked the two for saving his life that day.

Wilson Health strives to find ways to extend care beyond the walls of the hospital with programs and resources designed to keep you in charge of your health.

Wilson Health Sports Medicine recently held the first annual 21 Day Lean Weight Loss Challenge. Participants included faculty from partnering sports medicine schools. For three weeks, teachers and staff at Anna, Fort Loramie, Fairlawn, Riverside, Minster, New Bremen, Lehman Cath-olic, Botkins, New Knoxville and Jackson Center schools, participated in the weight loss challenge with the winning school receiving a $500 donation to a local food pantry of their choice. This year’s first place winner was Anna High School. The 35 participants lost a total of 222 pounds during the three week challenge. Fort Loramie High School came in a close second with 41 participants with a combined total weight loss of 179.5 pounds. Fairlawn High School came in third place and had 41 participants compete in the challenge and lost a total of 160.6 pounds. Together, all ten participating schools lost a combined total of 856.7 pounds with a total of 196 participants.Paul Miller, athletic trainer, Wilson Health Sports Medi-cine and Anna High School, came up with the idea for the weight loss challenge. “With the average person gaining one to two pounds during the holidays, we wanted to do something to get people in the right mind set as we en-ter into the New Year,” he said. “We also wanted to have some fun with the weight loss challenge by making it a competition. Plus, being able to lose weight for a cause makes it that much more meaningful.”Anna High School donated the $500 to Agape Food Pantry located in Sidney.

AREA CARES PARTNERS WITH WHRepresentatives from Area Energy & Electric delivered “Area Cares” plush bears to Dave Buchanan, director of Wilson Health’s Emergency Department. The bears were distributed to pediatric patients that were in need of medical care over the holiday season as a way to brighten their hospital visit.“As a local business, Area wanted to create a program to empower our employees with a sense of char-ity through community involvement,” states Bruce Wilcox, Human Resources Director at Area Energy & Electric. “No one wants to be in the hospital over the holidays, so we thought Wilson would be a great place to kick off the program with our Area Cares bears.”“The mission of Area Cares aligns perfectly with Wilson’s Purpose, so we were thrilled to partner on this program and look forward to more partnership opportunities with Area Cares in the future,” said Mark Dooley, president and CEO of Wilson Health.

CARING AT CHRISTMAS UPDATEThis year the Caring at Christmas project receiveddonations of $24,655 to benefit Wilson Hospice Care. This is the 22nd year for the program and over the years more than $506,000 has been collected.Instead of mailing Christmas cards to friends and relatives, area residents chose to donate the money they would have spent on cards and postage to “Caring at Christmas.” Shortly before Christmas, a “Christmas Greeting,” listing the names of all contrib-utors to this fund, appeared in the Sidney Daily News.
