What Is a Hospitalist?Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in caring for patients in the

hospital. Th ey are available around the clock and are dedicated solely to

the care and treatment of hospitalized patients.

Th e hospitalist sees you every day and supervises your treatment while

you are a patient at the hospital. Th is doctor is available to you and your

family to answer your questions and to discuss your care.

Not an isolated doctor, your hospitalist works together with your primary

care physician. When you are admitted to the hospital, your primary

care physician and hospitalist will discuss your current condition and

any relevant information from your medical history. When you leave the

hospital, a summary of your hospital stay is sent to your primary care

physician. Th e hospitalist will make arrangements for any prescriptions

you may need when you are discharged. After discharge, you will follow-

up with your primary care physician. If you do not have a primary care

physician, the hospitalist will refer you to a doctor and give your new

doctor information about your medical history and recent hospitalization.
