Dear Future Worldchanger,

Imagine a beautiful, brand new, 90,000 square foot Bible college, right in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. What an incredible setting to learn God’s word! Charis Bible College is planning to relocate from Colorado Springs, CO to Woodland Park, CO in December 2013. We will be having our inaugural classes in the first phase of our brand new facility, called The Sanctuary, by January 2013. Since our enrollment is increasing, we are very excited to move into the bigger building even if it is in the middle of the school year!

To help you in this transition, we have created a new relocation guide that includes helpful statistics and contact information for both Colorado Springs and Woodland Park. We have also included a frequently asked question section in this guide about this transition and are also including a short, two minute Woodland Park tour on DVD.

It is our desire that this relocation guide will assist you in making the right decision, whether you live in the city of Colorado Springs or the mountain town of Woodland Park. Since the new campus will be a thirty minute, scenic drive from Colorado Springs, you will have many options for work, housing and shopping between both communities.

Q: When will the Woodland Park campus be completed?A: At the current pace of construction, phase one of the new campus will be completed in November 2013.  If that completion target is achieved, CBC will move to the new campus over the Christmas break and classes will resume in January 2014 at the Woodland Park location.  The proposed academic calendar for the 2013-2014 school year is posted on our web site.

Q: Should I make arrangements for housing in Woodland Park or Colorado Springs?A: The choice to live in Woodland Park is yours to make.  Some considerations you will want to in-clude in your decision are your place of employment, where you will be going to church, where you wish for your children to attend school, and whether you prefer a small community or enjoy the city.

Q: Will there be housing available on campus in Woodland Park?  (#1 questions with international students who don’t always have transportation available.)A: A group of private investors has developed a proposal to build and manage a limited amount of student housing on campus.  At this time, however, that proposal is still in the developmental stages and no dates for construction to begin have been established.

Q: How long is the drive from Colorado Springs to the school?A: The drive to the school is approximately 30 minutes from our current location in Colorado Springs.  The length of your commute would depend on the location of your accommodations.

Q: Will there be transportation available to the new campus once the midyear move is made?A: The possibility of providing shuttle service from the current ministry location is being explored, although no decision has been made.  This shuttle service would most likely be at some cost to the users.  Details regarding cost and schedule will be finalized once the construction schedule nears completion.

Q: What type of housing is available in Woodland Park?A: We recommend you contact a realtor who is familiar with the Woodland Park area.  There are sev-eral real estate offices located in Woodland Park.  You might consider coming to CBC during one of our upcoming events such Campus Days in March or Summer Family Bible Conference in July.  This would give you an opportunity to see CBC and explore both the Colorado Springs and Woodland Park areas.  We are also working on a new relocation packet that will also include information for Woodland Park.

Surrounded by miles of the picturesque Pike National Forest, and boasting over 300 days of sunshine each year, Woodland Park and the Teller County region is both a popular year-round destination for outdoor recreation and a thriving center of commerce. The largest city in Teller County combines irresistable small-town charm with comfortable summers, mild winters, and various amenities that enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. With a population of over 7,200, it is a family-friendly city with a workforce that boasts a broad range of specialities, including tourism, mining, construction, educational/health/social services, retail, real estate, and light manufacturing, among others.

Situated along U.S. Highway 24 and State Highway 67, Woodland Park is located just 18 miles west of Colorado Springs. Known as a bedroom community, it has evolved into a destination as well, and it’s the perfect base for exploring nearby attractions like Pikes Peak, Mueller State Park, and the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.

The city’s diverse population includes singles, young families, retirees, corporate CEOs, artists, active military and part- time residents of Woodland Park. Michael Harper, 2011 chariman of the board for the Greater Woodland Park Chamber of Commerce, has lived in the area for over 30 years. “It’s the perfect place to live, work, and raise a family,” he said. “The natural beauty that surrounds us, the abundance of activities, healthy lifestyle, and the friendliness of the people who live here set our city apart from almost anywhere in the country.”

City Manager David Buttery says Woodland Park is a community that “takes pride in it’s past while taking steps to ensure a prosperous future.” Buttery adds that Woodland Park City’s Comprehensive Plan provides a framework for the future based on extensive input from city leaders, expert consultants, and members of the community. “The plan focuses on improving the city, attracting new business, and providing residents with a high quality of life; but it also addresses controlled land use and growth and both economic and environmental sustainablity.”

The city has a deep appreciation for it’s culture and history, often bringing residents and visitors together at festivals and seasonal events. Charis Bible College is thrilled to be moving to their new location in Woodland Park. When Zebulon Pike first saw the mountain overlooking Colorado Springs, he believed it would never be scaled. He was wrong, and “the fourteener”, later named Pikes Peak in his honor, has not only been scaled many times, but stands as an icon of the Colorado Springs culture of acheivement.

The city itself was founded by General William Jackson Palmer, an ambitious promoter for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in the post Civil War period. He envisioned a city of the future with a mountain backdrop where culture, temperance and gracious living would not be ruined by industry and slums, which had been the case in his native London, England. The first stake of the city was driven in 1871 at what is now the downtown corner of Pikes Peak and Cascade.

In the early 1950s, a local business group heard the United States Government needed a location for what would become the United States Air Force Academy. They mounted an effort to bring Colorado Springs to the “attention” of those making the site decision. Several years later, the United States Air Force Academy accepted it’s first class, and has been a thriving part of the local community ever since.

The environment of innovative thinking that brought the United States Air Force Academy to Colorado Springs has continued to attract major companies and organizations, including the United States Olympic Committee, Hewlett Packard, USAA Insurance, Progressive Insurance, Agilent Technologies, FedEx Services, Lockheed Martin, T. Rowe Price and over 40 headquarters of sports organizations and olympic governing bodies. These companies and many others came to Colorado Springs to take advantage of business opportunities, the highly skilled workforce and the extraordinary quality of life the area offers.

The city has seen continuous and sometimes explosive growth. Colorado Springs current population is now over 400,000 and El Paso County is over 600,000. The area is continuing to attract visitors and new residents at an astounding rate. In 2006 Money Magazine declared Colorado Springs the #1 best big city in the United States in which to live.

From the rich artistic history in Manitou Springs to internationally acclaimed youth art groups, the Pikes Peak region has a vital and growing arts and entertainment scene. More than 100 arts non-profits provide the backbone for the cultural community, ensuring that visitors, newcomers and longtime residents can find their niche.

Performing ArtsSummer means Shakespeare in Colorado Springs, thanks to UCCS Theatreworks, whose productions have been called by Shakespeare Quarterly “as good, in absolute, as the best in the world”. Other theater companies providing a wide array of shows include Star Bar Players, the Fine Arts Center Repertory Theatre, Manitou Art Theater, and more.

MusicThe music scene in the Pikes Peak region is on full display during the summer months, as free concerts are available throughout the regions many parks. A schedule of these shows can be found on the city website.The natural beauty of the Pikes Peak region has inspired thousands of artists through the decades. At the heart of the arts scene is the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, a multidisciplinary facility offering theater, arts instruction, lectures, film screenings, and of course, nationally and internationally acclaimed exhibits.

Downtown Colorado SpringsDowntown Colorado Springs provides classic Colorado architecture and great local restaurants. The present downtown is the location where General Lewis Palmer first founded the city. The Downtown area is also home to the 2,000 seat Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts and America the Beautiful Park.

Old Colorado CityIn it’s earliest days of 1859 and 1860, Colorado City (now called Old Colorado City) was a major hub for supplies during the Colorado Gold Rush. Currently, it is an extremely popular destination for shoppers and tourists, providing many unique shops and restaurants- while still maintaning the charm of historic Colorado.

Woodland Park residents and visitors enjoy a thriving arts community year-round. For a town its size, Woodland Park offers an extensive variety of music, theater and art in addition to annual festivals that draw crowds from all over Colorado, as well as surrounding states. Here are some of the fantastic events that are available:

Ute Pass Cultural Center hosts dozens of events throughout the year, including plays, concerts and festivals.

Woodland Music Series is held the second Saturday of each month from June-September. This annual free con-cert series features a variety of music, including classical, big band, blues and bluegrass. Worship Fest Colorado (formerly known as the Pikes Peak Christian Arts Festival) is an annual event created in 2007 by Woodland Park resident Galen Beaver. The festival is held each June at the Midland Pavilion and attracts talented musicians and artists from all over the country. Symphony Above the Clouds is a must-see concert on July 5th that has been entertaining locals and visitors for 30+ years. Expect to see several thousand people who bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets, enjoying this wonderful event. Mountain Arts Festival is held the first weekend of August on the grounds of the Ute Pass Cultural Center. The two-day Mountain Arts Fesival includes displays from more than 75 regional and national artists, including paintings, photography, jewlery, leather goods, pottery, woodwork and more. 4th of July in Woodland Park Each year over 5,000 people gather for the annual 4th of July celebration at Memorial Park. RecreationColorado Springs is one of the premier vacation destinations in the United States, the majestic beauty of Pikes Peak being a principle attraction. Visitors can venture up High Drive, a one-way road without guardrails, to see the spectacular views. North Cheyenne Canyon contains unusual rock formations and waterfalls that cascade down the mountains. In the Garden of the Gods visitors can hike or ride horses through huge red sandstone rock formations; the Garden of the Gods is particularly lovely to visit at sunrise or sunset, when the suns rays set off the natural splendor of the rocks. Observation areas and picnic spaces are provided throughout the park that offer amazing views of the surrounding landscape.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo displays more than 600 wild animals from around the world in the U.S.’s only mountain zoo. The Mountaineer Sky Ride allows spectators to soar over exhibits such as the Rocky Mountain goats, My Big Backyard, Asain Highlands and the three acre Rocky Mountain Wild which showcases moose, mountian lions, Canada lynx, North American river otters, grizzly bears and bald eagles. The African Rift Valley area features Colobus monkeys, giraffes, other animals and birds, and an interactive African Play Village for kids. The price of admission includes a visit to the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, which exhibits mementos of this famous American humorist and an 80-foot high observation tower.

The United States Air Force Academy is one of Colorado Springs’ most popular tourist attraction. Visitors can tour the ususual multispired chapel, Honor Court and the visitor’s center. The Pikes Peak Cog Railway takes visitors on a 3-hour round-trip tour to the summit of the mountain, at 14,110 feet above sea level. At the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy, rodeo memorabilia is on display.

Woodland Park

Woodland Park and Teller County is truly one of the premier destinations in the country for hiking and camping. Our unbelievable mountain views and mild climate attract people from all over to take advantage of these wonderful trails and campgrounds. Here are some of the more popular trails and campgrounds in Teller County:

Distance: 4.2 miles round tripElevation Gain: 600 feetRoad Directions: Take Highway 24 West to Divide. Turn South on 67 towards Cripple Creek. Travel 4.2 miles then turn left on Forest Service Road #383. Drive three miles on the dirt road and you will see the trailhead parking lot on the right side.

This is a dog friendly trail.

The CragsDistance: 4 miles round tripElevation Gain: 700 feetRoad Directions: Take Highway 24 West to Divide. Turn South on 67 towards Cripple Creek. Travel nine miles until you pass the closed railroad tunnel. Park on the other side of the tunnel. Trailhead is on your left.

Horsethief Falls (2.6 miles round trip) and Pancake Rocks Trail (8 miles roundtrip) are also located at this trailhead.
