Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,
Every Sunday at Mass, during the recitation of the creed, we mention a number of the tenets of our Catholic Faith in which we profess to believe. One of those tenets is the Communion of Saints. The Communion of Saints reminds us not only of our connection to those who still live amongst us but also our connection to those who have gone before us. As we give more attention to the fact that the dead continue to remain in relationship with us, the boundaries or the distance between us and them begins to fade a bit.
On Friday and Saturday of this upcoming week, we will celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints and the Commemoration of All Souls. These ancient feasts invite us to be attentive to time when past, present, and future time all come together as one. On these pivotal days we are reminded that our ancestors are still in us and work with us and through us. These days that we will be celebrating this week remind us of the connection that we the living still have with the dead. Just as we have obligations to pray for and help those among the living who are in need, the saints continue to pray for us and we are called, are obliged, to pray for those souls who are still on their journey home to God. In our hyper-connected, but unreflective postmodern existences, it can be hard enough to put aside the smart phone to see the sister or brother in need and enter into communion with that person in some way. If that is hard, it can be almost impossible for us to remember those who have gone before us, pray for them, ask them to pray for us and also to recall their lives for inspiration and example.
All Saints Day, the day on which Catholics celebrate all the saints, known and unknown, canonized and not canonized, is a surprisingly old feast. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their martyrdom.
All Souls' Day commemorates the faithful departed. The Roman Catholic celebration of All Souls is associated with the doctrine that the souls of the faithful, who at the time of their death, have not been cleansed from the temporal punishment due to venial sins and from attachment to mortal sins cannot immediately attain the beatific vision in heaven, and that they may be helped to do so by prayer and through the celebration of the Mass. In other words, when they died, they had not yet attained full sanctification -- a requirement for entrance into Heaven.
In reality, these two days, All Saints and All Souls should better be celebrated as one great feast. On Friday, Masses will be celebrated in English at 8:30a.m, and 12:00 Noon. Masses in Spanish will be celebrated on Thursday evening at 7p.m. (vigil Mass), and at 7:00p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, All Souls Day, Mass will be celebrated in English at 9a.m. and in Spanish at 12:10p.m.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,
Todos los domingos en la misa, durante la recitación del cre-do, mencionamos un número de principios de nuestra fe católica que profesamos creer. Uno de esos principios es la comunión de los santos. La comunión de los santos nos re-cuerda no solo de nuestra conexión a aquellos que aún viven entre nosotros pero también nuestra conexión a aquellos que se han ido antes que nosotros. Mientras que le damos más atención al hecho de que los difuntos continúan relacionados con nosotros, los límites o la distancia entre ellos y nosotros empieza a desaparecer un poquito.
El viernes y sábado de la próxima semana, celebraremos la Solemnidad de Todos los Santos y la Conmemoración de Todos los Fieles Difuntos. Estas fiestas antiguas nos invitan a estar más atentos al tiempo cuando el pasado, presente y futuro se juntan como uno. En estos días esenciales se nos recuerda que nuestros antepasados todavía están en noso-tros y trabajan con nosotros y a través de nosotros. Estos días que estaremos celebrando esta semana nos recuerdan de la conexión que nosotros los vivos aún tenemos con los muertos. Así como tenemos la obligación de rezar por y ayudar a aquellos entre los vivos que estén en necesidad, los santos continúan orando por nosotros y estamos llamados, más bien, obligados, a rezar por aquellas almas que aún es-tán en su viaje a casa con Dios. En nuestras híper-conectadas pero irreflexivas existencias pos-modernistas, es muy difícil poner a un lado el teléfono inteligente para ver la necesidad de un hermano o hermana y entrar en comunión de alguna manera con esa persona. Si eso es difícil, es casi imposible para nosotros recordar a aquellos que se han ido antes que nosotros, rezar por ellos, pedirles que oren por nosotros y también recordar sus vidas como inspiración y ejemplo.
El Día de Todos los Santos, el día en que los católicos cele-bran a todos los santos conocidos y no conocidos, es una fiesta sorprendentemente antigua. Surgió de la tradición cristiana de celebrar el martirio de los santos en el aniversa-rio de su martirio.
La Conmemoración de Todos los Fieles Difuntos conmemora a los fieles fallecidos. La celebración católica romana de to-dos los fieles difuntos está asociada con la doctrina de que las almas de los fieles, a la hora de su muerte, no han sido limpiadas del castigo temporal a causa de pecados menores y de ataduras a pecados mortales, no pueden obtener inmedia-tamente la visión beatífica en el cielo y que pueden ser ayu-dados a lograrlo a través de la oración y a través de la cele-bración de la misa. En otras palabras, cuando murieron, to-davía no habían obtenido la santificación completa, un re-querido para entrar en el cielo.
En realidad, estos dos días, todos los santos y todos los fieles difuntos, debería ser celebrado mejor como una sola gran fiesta. El viernes, las misas serán celebradas en inglés a las 8.30 de la mañana y al mediodía. Las misas ese español se-rán celebradas el jueves por la noche a las 7 (misa vigilia) y a las 7.45 de la noche el viernes. El sábado, día de todos los fieles difuntos, la misa será celebrada en inglés a las 9 de la mañana y a las 12.10 de la tarde.

ALL SAINTS / ALL SOULS
All Saints' Day is on Friday, November l, and it is a holy day. Masses are 7:00PM (Thursday) in Spanish 8:30AM (Friday) with the children from the parish school 12Noon in English 7:00PM in Spanish All Souls' Day is Saturday, November 2. Masses are cele-brated 9:00AM in English 12:10PM in Spanish The evening Masses that day will be celebrated as Vigil Masses for Sunday ALL SOULS' ENVELOPES are available at the back of the church. Please enter the names of your beloved dead. The envelopes will be placed in the sanctuary during the month of November, and the dead will be remember at Masses during the month.
TODOS LOS SANTOS / TODAS LAS ALMAS
El Día de Todos los Santos es el Viernes 1 de Noviembre y es un día sagrado. Las Misas son 7:00 PM (Jueves) en Español 8:30 AM (Viernes) con los niños de la escuela parroquial 12 del mediodía en Inglés 7:00 PM en Español El día de todas las Almas es el Sábado 2 de Noviembre. Se celebran Misas 9:00 AM en Inglés 12:10 PM en Español Las Misas vespertinas de ese día se celebrarán como Misas de Vigilia para el Domingo. ASCENSION’S 125TH ANNIVERSARY KICKS OFF WITH:
A BOOK RELEASE AND SIGNING on Tuesday, 5 November, immediate following the weeknight 7:00PM Mass. There will be a brief lecture by Msgr. Shelley on his book UPPER WEST SIDE CATHOLICS - "LIBERAL CATHOLICISM IN A CONSERVATIVE ARCHDIOCESE." This will take place ap-proximately 7:40PM in the Church. This will be followed by a book signing and reception in the dining room.
BURIAL OF CREMATED REMAINS
The parish is aware that several people have the ashes of their beloved dead because they were not able to afford burial at the time of death. Father Kearney has arranged for free burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, Westchester County. On Saturday morning, November 9, there will be a special Mass at 9:00 AM, with the ashes pre-sent, followed by the burial. If you have ashes at home and would like to have them interred/buried on that day, please speak with Father Kearney or Sareda as soon as possi-ble. Get in contact with him with any questions or clarifi-cations.

La parroquia es consciente de que varias personas tienen las cenizas de sus seres queridos muertos porque no pu-dieron pagar el entierro en el momento de la muerte. Next weekend, November 2, we will be joining for basketball in the gym at 1 p.m. On Sunday, November 3, we need YOUR help beginning at 8:00 a.m. to help the younger stu-dents get into their saints costumes, and help them out of them after the 11 o'clock mass. Please consider sharing the morning of the Saints' celebration with us. COMING UP: The Imagine Society has invited us to share in a fundraiser, playing basketball against other citywide youth groups to raise money for the victims of the hurricane in the Bahamas. Please let me know if you want to play! Also, on November 16 we need help in sponsoring an all day event on mental health first aid, in collaboration with Archcare and Mental Health First Aid USA. I need a few kids to help with hospitality/hall monitoring, etc.
