ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON-HOUSTON TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today’s. After World War I, the chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of hope and holiness in married family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today’s feast was “invented” in 1921. In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas. The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We ponder the mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The message of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and commitments. The lives of people who raise their children in difficult circumstances, and of people who remain faithful to life in the Church in spite of some of their own family struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts today in prayer.Rev. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today’s. After World War I,

the chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of

hope and holiness in married family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today’s feast was “invented”

in 1921. In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas.

The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We ponder the

mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The

message of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and

Mary As the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary has a unique posi-

tion among the saints, indeed, among all creatures. She

is exalted, yet still one of us. Redeemed by reason of the merits of her Son and

united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie, she is en-dowed with the high office and dignity of being the

Mother of the Son of God, by which account she is also the beloved daughter of the Father and the temple of the

Holy Spirit. Because of this gift of sublime grace she far

surpasses all Creatures, both in heaven and on earth. At the same time, however, because she belongs to the off-

spring of Adam she is one with all those who are to be saved. (Lumen Gentium, no. 53)

Mary embraces God’s will and freely chooses to cooper-

ate with God’s grace, thereby fulfilling a crucial role in God’s plan of salvation. Throughout the centuries, the

Church has turned to the Blessed Virgin in order to come closer to Christ. Many forms of piety towards the Mother

of God developed that help bring us closer to her Son. In these devotions to Mary, “while the Mother is honored,

the Son, through whom all things have their being and in

whom it has pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell, is rightly known, loved and glorified and ...all His

commands are observed.” The Church honors her as the Mother of God, looks to her as a model of perfect disci-

pleship, and asks for her prayers to God on our behalf.

Feast of the Holy Family

We will be celebrating the Feast of the

Holy Family this weekend! The Holy Family stands as a great example for

each of our families. Although they

faced many trials and difficulties, Mary and Joseph were able to remain joyful

through it all because Christ was with them. In the words of Pope Francis,

"…true joy even remains during times of trial too, even in suffering, because it is not superficial joy but enters into

the very depths of the person who entrusts himself to

God and confides in him…Those who have met Jesus along the way have experienced a joy that nothing and

no one can take away. Jesus Christ is our joy! His faithful love is inexhaustible!” So, even though our families may

surely face many difficulties, we can remain joyful be-

cause we do not have to face these trials alone. Christ is with us!

Official Prayer: World Meeting of Families

God and Father of us all,

in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,

you have made us your sons and daughters

in the family of the Church.

May your grace and love

help our families in every part of the world

be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.

May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit,

guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer

and to always seek your truth and live in your love.

Through Christ our Lord,

Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

CHILDREN OF ETERNITY

You are children of eternity. Your immortal crown awaits you, to reward your duty and love. You may in-

deed sow here in tears, but you may be sure there to reap in joy.—St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

mente muchas dificultades, podemos seguir siendo alegre

Cris-

to está con nosotros!

Consecrated Life: Religious life ought to promote

growth in the church by way of attraction. The church must be attractive. Wake up the world! Be witnesses of a

different way of doing things, of acting, of living! . . . It is this witness that I expect of you. Religious should be men and women who are able to wake the world up. —Pope Fran-

cis, meeting with the Union of Superiors General, November 29, 2013
