Who is Missing?

Beacon Tower is a senior, low-income apartment building owned by the Seattle Housing Authority. The residents of the 108-unit tower are culturally and ethnically diverse but predominately Cantonese speakers.

Plaza Roberto Maestas is a transit-oriented development directly north of the Beacon Hill Light Rail Station. 110 apartments of one-, two- and three-bedroom units are available for rent for residents earning 30-60% of the area median income.

The Station is a neighborhood coffee shop that has been an important gathering space for people of color and popular with a diverse cross-section of the community.

Beacon Hill Library is a community hub and gathering space in Beacon Hill. The library is home to different programs that serve a multilingual audience.

Online SurveyCurrently live, the community can provide the project team with input through an online survey. The link has been blasted out through our listservs, social media outlets, and on our project website. It has also been translated into Spanish, Tagalog, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Somali, and Japanese, and paper copies have been handed out to low-income housing developments and social service providers.

Advisory GroupThe Advisory Group is the sounding board for the project team, consisting of representatives of the following community organizations and businesses: Beacon Hill Safe Streets, Beacon Hill Merchants Association, Plaza Roberto Maestas (El Centro de la Raza), Beacon Hill Council, Lighthouse for the Blind, Red Apple, Pacific Housing NW. They have been sharing their local knowledge and expertise to identify community values and transportation issues.

Community Liaisons Native speakers of Spanish, Tagalog, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Somali, and Japanese have provided translation services and accompanied staff to do targeted in-language outreach events. Contracted through the Department of Neighborhoods, Community Liaisons are an integral part of the project’s inclusive outreach efforts.

Through Women in Transportation’s Transportation YOU program at Franklin High School, guest speakers talk to girls about transportation planning and careers during their lunch hour. Franklin High School is a charter school with 93% students of color and 52% female students.

Beacon Hill Council of Seattle (BHCS) is a community organization that initiates conversations and provides a forum for making recommendations to Seattle City Council and other agencies on issues that impact the Beacon Hill residents and businesses.

Seattle Lee Family Association (SLFA) owns the building that it is headquartered on Beacon Ave S between S Hanford St and S Horton St, and their members have strong ties to the Chinatown/International District. Currently and throughout history, family associations have provided financial and emotional support to Chinese immigrants.

International Drop-in Center (IDIC) is a non-profit Filipino senior services center, located south of Jefferson Park since moving from the Chinatown/International District in 2004. IDIC has senior center activities, a food bank, social services, a meal program, and more.

Walking AuditLed by accessibility consultants, Karen Braitmayer and Peggy Martinez (also a resident), the project team hosted a walking audit on April 30. The general public was invited to experience the quality of the walking environment with neighbors, to learn the perspectives of people seeking accessible pedestrian solutions, and provide thoughts on how the neighborhood can be more accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
