WELCOME ALISA HITCHCOCK COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Welcome to Issue 22 of Barangaroo South News. We have had an extraordinary year during 2016 at Barangaroo South. In the last six months alone we have welcomed over 30 new retailers and 6,500 new office workers to the precinct, helping to further cement Barangaroo as a vibrant new part of our beautiful city. In November, we hosted the Barangaroo Street Fair in partnership with the Barangaroo Delivery Authority which proved to be a fantastic event with thousands of people visiting the precinct to take part in the celebrations. We were overwhelmed by its success and the positive feedback we received about what a great place Barangaroo has become. In a year filled with so many achievements, it’s only fitting that we share our success with the community in which we live and work. In the past few months we have hosted another successful ‘Community Day’ volunteering project, held our annual Year 10 work experience program, repurposed plants from the precinct to donate to local schools and rounded out the year with a very special ‘festive’ visitor to International House Sydney who came to see some of the local children from The Settlement after school care program. We look forward to further continuing our community and educational initiatives well into 2017. Finally, on behalf of the project team, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a safe Christmas and a very happy New Year. LENDLEASE ANNUAL COMMUNITY DAY

2 | BARANGAROO SOUTH NEWS - ISSUE 22, DECEMBER 2016

The Barangaroo Team hard at work at St Peter’s Public School

December signified the completion of the final commercial tower at International Towers Sydney.

Tower One, the tallest of the three buildings reached its final completion milestone this week and heralded a major milestone in the world class commercial precinct that has been created at Barangaroo.

Tower One will be home to tenants HSBC, PwC, Marsh & McLennan Companies and Servcorp. Fitness First has also opened its latest ‘Titanium’ offering gym in the podium level and Dukes Coffee Roasters have been welcomed to the southern lobby as the latest café to join the exceptional coffee line up on The Streets of Barangaroo.

Nathan Smith, the Construction Manager responsible for Tower One said: “It took over 3.5 million construction work hours with a peak workforce of 950 people to build this

tower which is no mean feat. With over 75,000m3 of concrete, 45,000 tonnes of steel and 9,000 glass façade panels, this building is certainly in a class of its own and rounds out the impressive addition of International Towers Sydney to the city skyline”.

Completing the third and final tower of International Towers Sydney is a great achievement. Tower One is Australia’s largest office building by floor area and will house around 11,000 workers when fully let.

TOWER ONE REACHES COMPLETION

In September this year over 50 members of the Barangaroo South project team along with their families spent the day volunteering at St Peters Public School in Sydney’s inner west.

This year the team worked to revamp several playground and garden areas and install outdoor benches creating appealing and creative spaces for outdoor learning for the students. The team also painted a feature wall in the playground to reflect the colours represented by the schools core values.

After a lot of digging, planting, pressure cleaning and painting, the team

POP UP PLANT DONATION Earlier this year, work to deconstruct the temporary retail activation along the waterfront of Barangaroo, known as the ‘Wulugul Pop Up’, gave the Community Development team the opportunity to repurpose the plants and trees that had been planted here as part of the sustainable pop up space made from fully recyclable materials.

Lendlease partnered with Annandale Public School to offer extra greenery to their ‘National Tree Day’ project. With the donation, the students had the chance to give the plants a new lease on life within their playground.

Imogen Kershaw, Teacher and Kitchen Garden Coordinator of the school wrote in their school newsletter: “Students from Annandale Public School planted 60 grasses, shrubs and trees around their school grounds as part of National Tree Day this year. The native plants were donated by Lendlease at Barangaroo. APS would like to say thank you for helping our students learn about the importance of increasing biodiversity in an urban setting.”

We hope the plants will leave a lasting legacy for the school and our team is proud to have supported the school’s learning and environmental principles.

breathed new life into the playground areas that were previously underutilised. Neil Lavitt, the school’s Principal said: “The seats on our terrace are a hit with the kids on canteen day and have inspired us to look at further improving this area for everyone to enjoy.”

The day would not have been possible without the support of our project partners who kindly donated expertise, resources, equipment and plants to ensure its success. A special thank you to Oculus, Regal Innovations, Tresamber Painting, Coates Hire, Bakers and Dial a Dump.

For the second year in a row children from The Settlement after school care program based in Redfern received a warm welcome from the Barangaroo South project team celebrating Christmas at the construction site that is International House Sydney, Barangaroo’s Cross Laminated Timber office building which is due for completion mid next year.

The children from The Settlement, aged between 6 and 10 years old, were met by tinsel clad engineers, site workers and the Community Development team who were eager to share their Christmas spirit and give these children an experience to remember at Barangaroo.

Each child was buddied up with a Lendlease team member and was given a site visit of this building during construction. The children arrived to the site which was decorated in tinsel with a plush red throne just waiting for their special guest to arrive.

The children eagerly learned about safety, teamwork and construction from the project team. They also enjoyed afternoon tea with their Lendlease buddies while getting

‘behind the scenes’ access to the building before it is completed.

It was such a joy to have these children visit again.

TOWER ONE REACHES COMPLETION

Each November, the Barangaroo South team holds a work experience program for year 10 students from various schools around the greater Sydney region. The week gives the students the opportunity to explore the varied careers and opportunities available to them within the property and construction industry.

This year, students from schools including St Luke’s Grammar, Parramatta High School and Mount Annan High School, took part in a week long project to come up with a design for part of Barangaroo South. Each day during the week had a particular focus and guidance from a Lendlease expert whose knowledge and experience of Barangaroo South helped the students to make decisions about where they might like to focus their thinking around their future careers.

Throughout the week the students learned about project management, design, sustainability, construction, development, stakeholder engagement and marketing. They

also had the opportunity to visit the construction site, take part in an engineering task and learn presentation and interview skills.

Lara van der Mass from St Luke’s Grammar said: “I had such a great time and thought it was an amazing experience. I benefited so much from the program and learnt many things about how everything operates in big

businesses, and how many different types of jobs are actually available.”

The program has been running for 6 years and has seen over 50 students take part. Applications for the 2017 Year 10 work experience program will open next year. If you are interested to learn more, please contact the team at [email protected].

DIPANKAR MUKHERJEEIn this issue we profile Dipankar Mukherjee, the Construction Manager delivering Matt Moran’s new stand-alone restaurant along the waterfront at Barangaroo South.

How would you describe your role on the project?

I consider myself as more of a catalyst, bringing people together to create something positive.

What excites you most about being involved in creating Barangaroo South?

That I get to make a personal contribution to this beautiful city, and leaving a meaningful legacy for future generations!

What are the challenges you face in your role?

Communication and managing people and their expectations. It is very important to take people on the journey and help them to see the bigger picture when dealing with complex construction projects such as Barangaroo.

What is the best advice you have been given in your career?

There are three things that resonate with me that I have been told over the years:

The devil’s in the detail;

Everything can be done provided one applies 100% of your energy; and

Just focus and keep chasing!

What are your career highlights?

When I got the opportunity to work on two of the bespoke retail buildings at Barangaroo South – these have given me an amazing insight into the challenges of building in an inner city precinct.

What attracted you to this industry and how did you get to where you are now?

The people within the construction industry and different technology and methods of construction always attracted me.

5 MINUTES WITH…

Over the Christmas period there will be limited construction activity taking place.

The site will largely close down from 23 December 2016 and reopen on 3 January 2017.

During this period, there will be some low level activities required to continue on site such as final fit out works within retail tenancies, refuelling of generators, servicing of plant and equipment, and the management of weather events as required.
