Selecting A College/University

There are over 3,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. Keep the following in mind…..

• Four- year, two-year, public, private or vocational.• Location.-Do you want to be close to home or far away?• Size.- Under 3,000 students or over 30,000 students.• Coed or single sex.• Private or public institutions.• Programs of study offered.• Sports and extracurricular activity available.• Cost.- Do not exclude any choices because of high cost. (Sometimes expensive schools can afford to give you more aid).

What are the SAT and ACT exams?These exams are used by colleges and universities nationwide to assess an applicant’s aptitude for college-level work…and in recent years for FCAT concordance.Even if you are not planning to apply to college, or to a college that does not require these exams; it would be a good idea to have them in your records for the future.

SAT Subject Tests

• Subject Tests (formerly SAT II) are designed to measure your knowledge and skills in particular subject areas, as well as your ability to apply that knowledge.

• Required by CERTAIN colleges/universities for CERTAIN majors.

• Offered on the SAME DAY as the SAT I (except for the March administration)

• You may sign to take up to (3) SAT II on the same test date.

FEE WAIVERS…

Students who participate in Miami Dade County’s free or reduced lunchprogram are eligible to receive fee waivers for college entrance exams ASWELL AS for college application fees! There are other methods a student mayuse to qualify for fee waivers. If you are not on free/reduced lunch and think youmay qualify for another reason, please see Ms Gilman.• Fee Waivers may be used for 2 SAT exams and 2 ACT exams!!!!• Fee waiver recipients may then receive up to 4 college application fee waivers

from SAT and 4 college application fee waivers from ACT. BUT THE STUDENT MUST HAVE TESTED WITH A FEE WAIVER TO BE ELIGIBLE!

• Fee waivers can ONLY be used for ON TIME REGISTRATIONS. Fee waivers cannot be used for late or standby registrations.

• If a student registers with a fee waiver for a particular exam date and then DOES NOT ACTUALLY TEST, they will not receive their 2nd fee waiver.

PERT-Miami Dade/State Colleges Placement Test• At Miami Dade College – and other 2-year schools - you are exempt

from the PERT if you score: SAT I- 440 Verbal

440 Math ACT- 17- English

18- Reading19- Math

IMPORTANT: Please visit www.mdc.edu periodically for updates and changes.

• If you don’t obtain the minimum scores on the SAT, ACT or PERT, then you will be placed in remedial classes.

• Honors College will use the Writing score on the SAT and or ACT for admission.

Completion of 20 academic units in a college preparatory curriculum

• 4 years of English• 4 years of mathematics (Algebra I or higher…and whereas Math for College

Readiness IS accepted by Florida’s SUS – Admissions directors strongly encourage students to consider Pre-Calc, Calculus, Statistics, Trigonometry, etc…)

• 3 years of natural sciences (including lab)• 3 years of social studies• 2 to 4 years of the same foreign language (American Sign Language may not

• Florida Student Assistant Grant (FSAG) is a need-based program for degree seeking Florida undergraduate students attending public institutions

• First Generation matching Grant Program is available to all eligible students

• Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG) is a need-based program for degree seeking Florida undergraduate students attending private institutions

COLLEGE FAIRSPENDING…College Fair 2012 hosted by FIU:

Keep listening to the morning announcements for details. This fair tends to take place in early October.

Ft. Lauderdale NACAC National College Fair:

Wednesday, Oct. 13th 9am-1pm and 5:00pm-8:30pm

Ft. Lauderdale/Broward County Conv. Center / Ft. Lauderdale, FL

This is an excellent fair for undecided seniors and other students who are eager to dig into the college search process. Approximately 150+ colleges and universities will be represented. Informative workshops on admissions, testing, scholarships and financial aid will also be given.

Miami NACAC National College Fair:Sunday, Feb. 17th or 24th from 12-4 pm @ Doubletree Miami Mart/Airport Hotel &

Exhibition Center Students can pre-register for the NACAC college fairs. This will save tons of time and allow

SOUTH DADE’S COLLEGE & CAREER FAIR: Tuesday, Feb. 19st or 26th from 6-8 pm. Over 50 colleges, universities & other post secondary
