World History with Mr. Golden__________________________________________________________
The Spanish InquisitionNOBODY
EXPECTS THE SPANISH
INQUISITION!
Objective:________________________________________________________
FLWBAT describe the religious backlash of new ideas during theMiddle Ages in Europe
Agenda:________________________________________________________
- Review- Spanish Inquisition notes- Let’s talk about torture…- Galileo guided reading- We’re done!
Just a reminder:________________________________________________________
As we talked about before break -
(remember then?) - most people in Europe
during the Middle Ages were Catholic
Christians
I’m the Pope… I’m kind of a big deal.Just look at this
hat!
DOH! WHAT HAPPENED?!?
But not everyone agreed with the Church’s teachings…
Staple it in!________________________________________________________
Ka-chunk
!Ka-chunk!
Heretics:________________________________________________________
The Popes launched attacks
against any people who
threatened the Church’s power.
“Heretics” are people who oppose accepted Church
teachings.
Heretics:________________________________________________________Wanna know why Friday the 13th is unlucky?
Back in 1307, Pope Clement V believed
that the Order of the Knights Templar was getting too
powerful and not respecting the Church’s rules.
I sent secret letters all across Europe. I charged the Templars with heresy
and commanded local officials to put them to
death for crimes against God. My orders were executed, across the continent on Friday October 13, 1307.
Heretics! - Muslims in Spain:________________________________________________________
oMuslims - (sometimes called Moors) - had taken control of much of Spain
oAfter 200 years of attacks, Spain is reconquered and Christianized
Heretics! - Jews of Europe:________________________________________________________
o Jews were blamed for the death of Christ
oSome were forced to convert to Christianity or thrown out of their homeland entirely
This is also where the
“dunce cap” came from.
BUT…after they get rid
of the non-Christians, the
Church focuses on enemies
within its ranks
Spanish Inquisition:________________________________________________________
o A group of priests given power to find and punish heretics
o People accused of heresy are tortured and killed in huge public ceremonies
Even a holy man will abuse total power if he’s
given it.
Spanish Inquisition:________________________________________________________
So, how did they get confessions?
Torture was sometimes used by the Inquisition.o Aimed at getting a confession from the accusedo Purified the accused through pain
Torture: the Rack________________________________________________________
Offenders were tied down to a table with their feet secured. A rope tied to their hands was
tightened, stretching them.
Torture: Strappado________________________________________________________
o The victim is suspended by his/her wrists with their hands behind their back
o Shoulders would dislocate and the victim would be left hanging for days
o John McCain suffered this torture when he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam
Torture: It gets worse.________________________________________________________
It gets considerably worse from there with accused heretics, witches, or pagans being burned alive, sawed in half, or being bathed in molten metal in
order to get a confession out of them
Torture: It gets worse.________________________________________________________

What was the effect?________________________________________________________

1. What was Galileo’s “controversial” idea?
2. Why did the Inquisition believe that Galileo was a heretic?
3. What was the result of Galileo’s trial?
