WELCOME at Texperium INNOVATIVE TEXTILE RECYCLING –
FACT-FINDING-TRIP 17 maart 2016
A combined visit for mechanical Textiles recycling of post-consumer Textiles. And certified destruction of post-consumer textiles at Frankenhuis
Total 10.000 ton textile fibre recycling --------------------------------------------------------------
• 4.000 ton knitwear • 3.000 ton Jeans/denim • 1.000 ton carpet • 2.000 ton other textiles
Innovative machinery in a quality controled environment.
Stichting Texperium
• Facilitating and initiating reverse textile collection projects
• Setting up collection ranges in accordance with a high content of recycled fibres
• Fundamental research into high-quality reuse of non re-wearable fraction (including developing spinnable yarns)
• In cooperation with Saxion, Windesheim, UT and other European Institutes for product development and market implementation
• Processing and implementing environmental benefits (CO2, energy, etc.) in accordance ECOTOOL (Modint / CE Delft) calculation model
• Information and dissemination of knowledge and information for eg LAP2, MJA3 line with Min. I & M and Provincial targets.
2010
Knowledge Center of high-end textile recycling , product development and implementation
Bringing together stakeholders in the textile chain and thus increasing capacity
By joining forces, product development, procurement and possibly valorization of textile waste, extra employment can be created
Textile Recycling is within the next 5 years " business as usual"
Quality and price should mostly correspond to a product, consisting of new raw materials
Transparency, good working conditions, transition towards a circular economy
Sinths 1960 88% of the Aral lake (at the border of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan) has dried up
• Recycling is very environmental friendly – Recycled fibres rank among most sustainable fibres – Mechanical processes (unraveling) are energy
efficient – Less use of virgin materials
• Natural fibres: land use, methane emissions (wool)
• Synthetic fibres: reduction use of non-renewables
Textiles
• Environmental impact of textile fibre production is high
• Shortage of (natural) fibres combined with growing demand (4% anualy )
• 1 KG cotton is abt. 14.000 L of Water and 4,5 Kg CO2
• Discarded textiles are not (always) worn out
• Huge potential for reuse of recycled fibres and/or base materials
• Economic viable activity
• Demand from end-users for more sustainable products

Chances for circular economy
The report “Opportunities for circular economy in The Netherlands”, research agency TNO, concludes that a more circular economy could;
• result in7.3 billion euros economic savings and benefits
for The Netherlands;
• A reduction of 1,7mln. tons of CO2 per year (about 8% of the total Dutch emissions)
• reduction of raw material use by approximately 100,000 tons (a quarter of the total Dutch annual imports);
• The footprint for land and water use in the Netherlands reduces elsewhere in the world
Indirect benefits of transition to circular economy
Besides the potential profit for economy and environment, there are more indirect benefits concerning the transition towards a circular economy: • Development of a exportable knowledge; • Increase in supply of raw materials; • Reinvigorating the Dutch manufacturing industry; • Reinvigorating the recylingbranche; • Reinvigorating the logistics sector; • Developing new business in product - service systems , repair and reuse

Why do we need recycling in The Netherlands?
In the Netherlands we have
• an Annual consumption of 400,000 tons of textiles
• <80,000 tonnes (<20%) is collected.
• 40,000 tons recycled and re-wearable clothing.
• 40,000 tons is recycled, mostly abroad, to cloths, blankets, carpet underlay, insulation.
• 320,000 tonnes landfilled or incinerated.
New technologies make more reusability possible.

Discarded KLM cabin crewmembers uniform
VAR|Frankenhuis and Air France-KLM demonstrated in guidance of Texperium, a range of high-quality products, created out of the old KLM cabin crewmembers uniforms.
Old KLM lady’s uniforms are recycled into fibres, new ideas, product developement into new designs. ‐ 90 ton uniforms ‐ 4700 ton CO2 savings ‐ 1 mln. m³ natural gas eq.
