Welcome to Our Parish Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be a part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. Being a registered parishion-er makes things easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, funerals, affidavits and when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor. We can only do this if you are a registered, active and contributing member in the parish. Please call, visit the office or go online to our website to register.

Tweet From Pope Francis Being Christian does not mean defending yourself with an ideology in order to move forward. To be Christian is to be free, be-cause we have confidence, because we are docile to the Word of the Lord. 1/20

Promotion of World Peace

We pray that Christians, follow-ers of other religions, and all people of goodwill may promote peace and justice in the world.

Our Lady of the Angels Saturday, February 8

12:30 PM

Those suffering illness and their caregivers are invited to join a special Mass for World Day of the Sick 2020. The Mass will be at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Saturday, February 8, at 12:30 p.m. There will be an Anointing of the Sick, and a Blessing of Caregiver Hands. Attendees will receive Lourdes Water and a Holy Card. This Mass and Anoint-ing of the Sick are co-hosted by the Cathedral and the Western Association of the Order of Malta in observance of the 2020 World Day of the Sick.

Archbishop José Gomez will preside at the Mass and Anointing of the Sick. Bishop Marc Trudeau will be the homilist. The Mass is also being held in observance of the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Mass is open to everyone as we all join in prayer for the sick and their caregivers.

For more information, please contact: Chuck Carroll at [email protected] or Mary Ellen Eichler at [email protected].

DID YOU KNOW? Evaluate relationships based on context We may think we know enough about appropriate boundaries in relationships, but boundaries are complicated, even for adults. Children rely on adults to define what is appropriate and what isn’t, in the context of the relationship. For example, some touches are “safe” or “unsafe” depending on who is in the relationship — a parent, a stranger, a teacher, etc. For more infor-mation, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Keeping in Touch with Important Distinctions” from http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Habitat Sunday

Next Sunday, February 2nd, is Habitat Sun-day. There will be a representative from our local Habitat for Humanity at the morning Masses with information tables about the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity Catholic Coalition. After checking out the information,

enjoy the delicious Knights of Columbus Pancake Break-fast in Msgr. Crean Hall! All proceeds from the breakfast will go to SGV Habitat for Humanity.

Scout Mass Sunday, February 2 at

11:00AM

Held every February, Scout Sunday is a way for scouting organizations to show their

appreciation to the religious organizations that charter them. Please welcome our Scouts and their families.

St. Thomas Aquinas Feast Day, January 28

By universal consent, Thomas Aqui-nas is the preeminent spokesman of the Catholic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is one of the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored with the titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor.

At five, he was given to the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino in his parents’ hopes that he would choose that way of life and eventually became abbot. In 1239, he was sent to Naples to complete his studies. It was here that he was first attracted to Aristotle’s philoso-phy.

By 1243, Thomas joined the Dominicans not the Benedic-tines, much to his mother’s dismay. On her order, Thom-as was captured by his brother and kept at home for over a year.

Once free, he went to Paris and then to Cologne, where he finished his studies with Albert the Great. He held two professorships at Paris, lived at the court of Pope Urban IV, and directed the Dominican schools at Rome and Viterbo.

His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings. The unity, harmony, and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed and natural human knowledge, per-vades his writings. One might expect Thomas, as a man of the Gospel, to be an ardent defender of revealed truth. But he was broad enough, and deep enough, to see the whole natural order as coming from God the Creator, and to see reason as a divine gift to be highly cherished.

The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unfortunately, un-completed work, deals with the whole of Catholic theolo-gy. He stopped work on it after celebrating Mass on De-cember 6, 1273. When asked why he stopped writing, he replied, “I cannot go on…. All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me.” He died March 7, 1274.

He is the Patron of: Catholic Schools, Colleges, Schools, and Students.

"The Poor Will Always Be With Us" The Homeless Caravan, 1/18/2020:

Our commitment to serving the needy and the homeless is firmly rooted in a faith that is unwaver-ing…

We strike out not with passion, but with a calming DIS-PASSION…

We render no judgements, but rather compassion to those who suffer…

We seek just resolutions to all but impossible situations, and avoid the calamitous blaring of trumpets, preferring the subtlety of whispers…

We will continue to "fight the good fight"...

"We will never surrender."

Eternally, and without compromise… Robert Wyatt President

Singing for L.A. Audiences and the Pope! Pueri Cantores San Gabriel Valley is accepting new members and continuing their tradition of “Giving Wings to the Children”. Upcoming events for the singers of Pu-eri Cantores San Gabriel Valley include performance in their annual Spring concert, hosting a benefit for the East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless, and sing-ing with Maestro James Conlon at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in LA Opera’s Festival Play of Dan-iel. Perhaps most eye catching is the great crescendo of excitement which is now building toward our upcoming tour to Italy, where the choir will sing in Rome, Assisi, Florence and Pisa, including a Papal Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica with the Pope. Interested families should enroll their singers as soon as possible in order to participate. Call Patrick Flahive (626) 374-2410
