Welcome to Our Parish

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be a part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. Being a registered parishion-er makes things easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, funerals, affidavits and when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor. We can only do this if you are a registered, active and contributing member in the parish. Please call, visit the office or go online to our website to register.

DID YOU KNOW? The Importance of Emotional Boundaries We discuss the importance of physical bounda-ries quite a bit, teaching children to understand privacy and the difference between good touches and bad touches. But emotional boundaries are just as important, if not more so, because abuse victims are of-ten manipulated into trusting and believing their abus-ers. Predators can violate emotional boundaries fairly easily, worming their way into a child’s life and creating a false relationship. Parents should talk to their children about appropriate boundaries for their emotional relation-ships — with teachers, the parents of their friends, and other adults in their lives. Children do not always have the emotional maturity to set their own boundaries, so parents should be on the lookout for anything that seems inappropriate or “off” about the relationships their children form with other adults. To learn more about emotional boundaries and how to maintain them, email [email protected].

World Mission Sunday October 20-21

Speaker ~ Deacon Joe Domond

I am originally from Haiti, married with two boys, but one passed away

in 2004 at age of 22 in a car accident. I am one of 17 siblings (one priest and one nun). I live in Claremont, California, and as a Deacon I am assigned to Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Claremont. I was married on December 5, 1981, at the Assumption of the Blessed Vir-gin Mary Church in Pasadena.

I am the founder and the president of the Jeff Cherubin Domond Foundation, named after my deceased son, a 501(C)3, solely dedicated to serve the people of Haiti. I organize annual medical mission trips every March to Haiti where we also own and op-erate a kindergarten/primary school; we distribute water filters to the locals and we financially support an orphanage. We are now building a medical clinic in Marbial, Haiti, my birth place to serve the poor.

Women’s Silent Retreat “I am the Alpha and the Omega, I make all things new.” ~ Revelations 22:13

November 16 – 18, 2018 Poverello of Assisi Retreat House

1519 Woodworth St., San Fernando, 91340

Join us as we explore our Blessed Mother’s ‘yes’ to the Angel Gabriel’s news that she was chosen by God—the Annunciation. She responds, “Behold the Lord’s hand-maid. May it happen to me according to your word.” Mary’s life would be surrounded by mystery, joys, and sufferings, not unlike ours today. Her ‘yes’ is a light for us. On this retreat, Fr. Peter Devereux, LC, will lead us to an encounter with Jesus Christ through guided medita-tions, talks on scripture, encyclicals, and the lives of the saints, helping us to discover and follow the mission God has for each of us—a call to holiness as daughters of God.

COST* $250 per person (room & board for single or shared occupancy)

RSVP Michelle Chandler michelle_chandler@me. com For additional detail see flyers in the church.

Maintenance & Repairs Report – Month of September 2018 Those green envelopes…

The green envelopes found in your monthly envelope packet and in our pews are restricted for use towards our Church Maintenance & Repairs. Amounts collected from the “green envelopes” remain 100% in our parish and are not subject to an Archdiocese assessment fee. These funds go directly toward paying for our church facility up-keep, maintenance and improvements and the utilities bills.

We had 29 more families participating this month versus August 2018 as we had 1 more Sunday in September 2018.

Here is now a look at the month of September 2018 “green envelope” collections versus our actual mainte-nance & repairs expenditures: Funds collected from green envelopes $10,436 Repairs, routine maintenance, utility expenses $ 8,704 Reserve to offset previous and future expenses $ 1,732 Families Participating (green envelopes or indicated on check) 296

You may contribute anytime during the month by either using the green envelope found in your packet or in the pew or simply indicate on the memo line of your check, “Maintenance & Repairs”. Lower expenses in the month were related to a property tax adjustment.

Thank you so very much for your continuing generosity!

Faith Formation News Society of St. Vincent de Paul Assumption Conference

Did the young man in today’s Gospel tend to rely too much on negative goodness? He had not broken the Commandments, but how much good had he done for oth-

ers? Was Our Lord saying to him: “With all your posses-sions, with all your wealth, with all that you could give away, what positive good have you done for others?“ We can all do things for other people. We help our fami-ly, friends and neighbors all the time. We might help a stranger reach something in the market or greet them while walking. But looking around we do see many in need, particularly the homeless on the streets.

We have many reasons to be afraid. But God calls us to conquer that fear of the other. That’s what inspired me to join the St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Since joining members on the Homeless Caravans, serving dinners at the Cardinal Manning Center, or assisting hotline callers, I have been able to see that the “other” is not so different from me. I have talked with folks who have not had an easy life. The time I spend offering a little bit of help and fellowship has brought me great joy. The kind of joy that lasts for days. Maybe God is calling you to experience this type of joy!

We schedule a Homeless Caravan once a month. We put together mercy bags of non-perishable food and toi-letries and hand them out to homeless people we see in our own area. The mercy bag includes information about the Pasadena shelter system and rapid re-housing pro-gram. If you are interested in helping on one of these caravans, contact us through our hotline: (626) 657-0836.

We also assist folks living in our parish boundaries who are experiencing tough times. Our conference members take their calls on the hotline. We meet with and inter-view every caller. Our members are trained to do this. We have access to a variety of resources that allow us to lend a helping hand to people in times of need.

If you would like to know more about joining our Confer-ence, or if you know someone who needs assistance, please call our hotline: (626) 657-0836.

If you would like to make a monetary donation to be used in helping those in need, please use the Assumption SSVdP tan envelope provided in the pew.

Remember, 100% of your donation serves the poor!
