After 1066 the Norman policy was that cathedrals, then insmall communities, should be moved to larger centres ofpopulation. In 1075 the See of Chichester was established in

what had been an important Roman city.

The building of the present Cathedral was begun in 1076 underBishop Stigand and was completed under Bishop Luffa in time for itsconsecration to the Holy Trinity in 1108. In subsequent centuriesthere has been much additional building.

The Cathedral is itself a work of art, but itis also famous for its artistic treasures,which span the centuries from Normantimes to our own. Each of these can helpus to see the world of faith – and ourworld – through new eyes.

The building is used for a variety of events– concerts, recitals, exhibitions, drama –but they are not its primary purpose. Thisis a holy place, set apart for the service of

God, in which God is present in word and sacrament. Herethe daily round of worship is offered, as it has been for 900years of more or less turbulent history, in praise of Jesus Christ.Here since the thirteenth century, pilgrims have come to prayat the shrine of the saintly Bishop Richard.

People of all faiths, and none, are welcome to sit quietly, topray, to worship, to give thanks or to seek spiritual counsel.

Après 1066, les Normands ont souhaité que les cathédrales, alors présentes dans de petites communautés, soient construites dans de plus grands centres de population. En 1075, l’évêché de

Chichester s’est établi dans ce qui avait été une importante ville romaine.

Les travaux de construction de l’actuelle cathédrale ont débuté en 1076 sous l’épiscopat de l’évêque Stigand et se sont terminés sous celui de l’évêque Luffa, à temps pour sa consécration à la sainte trinité en 1108. Durant les siècles suivants, de nombreux bâtiments supplémentaires ont été construits autour.

Lors de leur visite, les groupes peuvent prendre un café, un repas ou un thé au Cloisters café (café du cloître) ou dans l’une des salles historiques privées attenantes à la cathédrale.

LE CAFÉ ET LA BOUTIQUE DU CLOÎTRE sont ouverts chaque jour aux visiteurs. Toute l’équipe met également à votre disposition un hébergement de qualité et adapté à votre budget, dans un cadre unique au sein du domaine de la cathédrale. BIENVENUE à la cathédrale de Chichester, l’Église Mère du diocèse de Chichester.

La cathédrale est une œuvre d’art en elle-même, mais elle est également connue pour ses trésors artistiques, dont l’histoire séculaire s’étend de l’époque des Normands à nos jours. Chacun de ces trésors peut nous aider à regarder le monde de la foi (et notre monde) au travers d’un œil neuf.

Le bâtiment est utilisé pour différents événements (concerts, récitals, expositions, pièces de théâtre) mais ce n’est pas son rôle principal. Il s’agit d’un lieu saint, au

service de Dieu, dans lequel Dieu est présent au travers des mots et des sacrements. Ici, le culte est rendu quotidiennement, depuis 900 ans d’une histoire plus ou moins agitée, en l’honneur de Jésus-Christ. Depuis de XIIIe siècle, des pèlerins sont venus prier ici sur l’autel du saint évêque Richard.

Les gens de toutes confessions et les athées sont invités à venir s’asseoir dans le calme, à prier, à vénérer, à remercier ou à chercher des conseils spirituels. Je prie pour que vous vous sentiez ici chez vous et que vous perceviez, grâce à la sainteté de ce lieu merveilleux, une partie de l’amour de Dieu, et sa paix qui dépasse notre compréhension.

THE BAPTISTRY The painting, The Baptism ofChrist is by Hans Feibusch(1951). The Font, in Cornishpolyphant stone with copperbowl, was designed by JohnSkelton (1983) and is part of thememorial to George Bell (Bishop1929-1958).

PIPER TAPESTRY(at the high altar). Designed byJohn Piper and woven in France(1966). The central subject isthe Holy Trinity, to which theCathedral is dedicated.

GRAHAMSUTHERLAND PAINTINGentitled Noli me tangere(Do not hold me) depictingChrist appearing to MaryMagdalene on the first Eastermorning.

SITE OF THE SHRINE OFST RICHARD OFCHICHESTER (Bishop 1245-53, canonised1262). The shrine was popularwith pilgrims until its destructionin 1538 by Henry VIII. Inrecent years the shrine hasbecome a centre of pilgrimage.

THE ANGLO-GERMANTAPESTRY (Ursula Benker-Schirmer, 1985)contains symbols, biblical inorigin, relating to the life of StRichard. Bishop Bell’s ashes areinterred here.

MARCHER DANS UNE CATHÉDRALE PEUT INSPIRER ET INTRIGUER...Lors de votre visite, nous vous invitons à réfléchir au sujet de cette espace sacré et aux différentes histoires qu’il relate au travers de ses chapelles, ses œuvres d’art, ses tombes et ses autels. Vous êtes au cœur d’un lieu érigé pour faire vivre une expérience directe avec le Divin à ceux qui en franchissent le seuil. Pour ceux qui pratiquent leur religion ici et aujourd’hui, ce lieu a encore ce pouvoir. C’est l’occasion de ressentir quelque chose d’à la fois ancien et moderne, de réfléchir à ce qui compte véritablement, et peut-être d’allumer une bougie pour quelqu’un dans le besoin.

1 LE BAPTISTÈRE Le tableau présenté, intitulé Le baptême du Christ, a été réalisé par l’artiste Hans Feibusch en 1951. Les fonts baptismaux, en polyphant stone (type de roche) de Cornouaille avec une vasque en cuivre, ont été dessinés par John Skelton en 1983 et font partie du mémorial George Bell (évêque de 1929 à 1958).

2 LA CHAPELLE SAINT GEORGE C’est la chapelle mémorial du Royal Sussex Regiment.

3 LA CHAPELLE SAINT CLÉMENT Le frontal de l’autel, intitulé L’icône de la lumière divine, est de Cecil Collins (1973). Le mémorial de la Royal Air Force a été consacré en 2006.

4 LE JUBÉ DE BELL ET ARUNDEL Érigée par l’évêque Arundel et restaurée en l’honneur de l’évêque Bell, cette arche date du début du XVe siècle. Elle a été retirée en 1859 et restaurée puis réinstallée à son emplacement d’origine en 1961.

5 LE TRANSEPT SUD Le vitrail datant du début du XIVe siècle est en partie fait de verre de Lorraine (1877). Les peintures de Lambert Barnard datent du début du XVIe siècle. Le guide souvenir de la cathédrale (présentant de superbes photographies) est disponible au bureau d’informations (et à la boutique du cloître, cf. 21).

6 DEUX IMPORTANTES SCULPTURES ROMANES datant du XIIe siècle représentent la résurrection de Lazare et l’arrivée du Christ à Béthanie. Elles étaient à l’origine peintes et il y avait des joyaux ou des pierres semi-précieuses à la place des yeux.

7 LA TAPISSERIE DE PIPER (derrière l’autel). Conçue par John Piper et réalisée en France en 1966, le thème central en est la sainte trinité, à laquelle la cathédrale est consacrée.

8 PEINTURE DE GRAHAM SUTHERLAND Intitulée Noli me tangere (Ne me touche pas), elle illustre le Christ apparaissant à Marie-Madeleine le matin de Pâques.

9 LIEU DE VÉNÉRATION DE SAINT RICHARD DE CHICHESTER (Évêque de 1245 à 1253, il a été canonisé en 1262). Le site attirait de nombreux pèlerins jusqu’à sa destruction en 1538 par Henry VIII. Ces dernières années, le site est redevenu un lieu de pèlerinage.

LA TAPISSERIE ANGLO-ALLEMANDE (Ursula Benker-Schirmer, 1985) contient des symboles, bibliques à l’origine, en lien avec la vie de Saint-Richard. Les cendres de l’évêque Bell sont inhumées ici.

10 LA CHAPELLE AUX DAMES est située à l’écart pour prier et se recueillir.

11 LE CHRIST EN GLOIRE est une sculpture de Philip Jackson datant de 1998, installée très en hauteur au dessus de l’entrée de la chapelle aux Dames. Il y a également une reproduction au niveau du sol.

12 LA CHAPELLE SAINT JEAN BAPTISTE Le tableau de 1984 est de Patrick Procktor et montre des scènes du baptême du Christ.

13 LE VITRAIL DE MARC CHAGALL (1978) est inspiré du Psaume 150 : « Ô louez Dieu dans son sanctuaire ! Que tout ce qui respire loue l’Éternel ! »

14 LE TRÉSOR Une exposition des trésors en provenance de paroisses du Sussex et de la cathédrale.

15 LE TRANSEPT NORD Avec des peintures de Lambert Barnard datant du XVIe siècle et montrant des représentations des évêques de Chichester.

16 LE MÉMORIAL GUSTAV HOLST est installé au sol et rappel le souvenir du poète décédé en 1934.

17 LE TOMBEAU D’ARUNDEL Il s’agit de Richard FitzAlan, mort en 1376, Comte d’Arundel et de sa femme, la comtesse. Ils ont inspiré un poème à Philip Larkin.

18 L’EXPOSITION décrit la vie et le travail d’aujourd’hui à la cathédrale ainsi que son histoire.

19 LA CHAPELLE S AINT MICHEL (la chapelle du marin), a été consacrée en 1956. C’est également un mémorial aux habitants du Sussex qui ont péri en mer durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

20 DONS L’entrée de la cathédrale est gratuite et nous faisons appel à votre générosité pour faire en sorte qu’elle le reste. L’entretien de la cathédrale coûte 3 000 £ par jour. Vos dons sont les bienvenus. Merci.
