Thank you for joining us at the Kansas City Real Estate Forum. This being our 17th year, we are "Facing Forward" with real estate professionals from across the region to advance their professional skills and business development.

The real estate market is evolving at faster and faster rates, bringing with it new challenges and considerations when evaluating each critical phase of the development and investment process. Kenneth Jaggers, MAI, FRICS Managing Director, JLL

Kenneth Jaggers is a Managing Director for JLL Valuation & Advisory Services in Kansas City, MO. Ken joined JLL through an acquisition in 2016, extending his 24 year career as a commercial real estate appraiser and consultant in Kansas City. He oversees all appraisal and consulting activity conducted through the Kansas City office. He is responsible for completing appraisals on commercial properties of all types, primarily for institutional investors and for litigation. Ken’s areas of specialty include development consulting, highest and best use feasibility analysis and disposition consulting.

Larry Glaze Managing Regional Director, JLL

Larry Glaze is the Managing Director of the Kansas City regional office, covering Western Missouri and the state of Kansas, and is a veteran in the commercial real estate industry. Recognized as a pioneer of tenant representation in the Kansas City region, his responsibilities include office and corporate service assignments. His areas of specialty include acquisitions, corporate headquarters, CRE outsourcing/portfolio & operations, portfolio strategy, law firms, national accounts and user representation.

Charles C. Connely, IV, CCIM, CFP®, CPM® Associate Teaching Professor, UMKC Bloch School of Management

Chuck Connely is an Associate Teaching Professor in the UMKC Bloch School of Management and is the Director of the Lewis White Real Estate center, where he has taught real estate and finance since 2009. Chuck is a Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) and member of the CCIM Institute. He is a Certified Property Manager (CPM®) and a member of the Institute of Real Estate Management: Certified Financial Planner (CFP®). He is also a member of the Financial Planners Association, a National Association of Corporate Directors Fellow and educator associate member of SIOR.

Ryan Severino Chief Economist, JLL

Ryan Severino is the Chief Economist at JLL, where he manages the economics team and is responsible for global and regional economic research, analysis and forecasting as well as property market forecasting. Prior to JLL, Ryan served as senior economist and director of research at Reis in the research and economics department, the team responsible for the firm’s market forecasting, valuation and portfolio analytics services. Additionally, Ryan currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Finance and Economics at Columbia University and New York University, teaching courses such as Urban Economics, Portfolio and Risk Management, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. He also has experience in real estate asset management, portfolio management and acquisitions.

Joe Tomlinson - Moderator Senior Projects Manager, JLL

Joe Tomlinson is from the Kansas city area and attended St. Louis University, where he received his undergraduate education as well as a Masters in Public Administration. Prior to working at JLL, Joe was a St. Louis Police Officer, a Jackson County, Missouri Economic Development analyst and the Director of Facilities for Jackson County, Missouri, overseeing construction, maintenance, repair and cleanliness of all county buildings.

Michael Collins Vice President, Director of Real Estate Investment, JE Dunn Construction

Michael Collins is a Vice President for JE Dunn Construction, a multi-billion-dollar construction firm founded in Kansas City, MO, in 1924. Michael leads the Public Private Partnership (P3) project development and real estate investment ventures. Previously, Michael was the president and CEO of Port KC, where he led the organization and spearheaded a diversified portfolio of more than $2.8 billion in transportation, public finance and real estate development. Michael began his career as senior aide to Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond in Washington, D.C., and Kansas City, MO. In this capacity, he was a senior advisor on transportation, economic development and federal facilities, financial services and appropriations policy.

Kevin Honomichl President and Co-Founder, BHC RHODES

Kevin Honomichl, P.E, P.S. is a professional civil engineer and land surveyor with experience in the fields of public works, site development, telecommunications and community planning. Kevin is active in several economic development organizations in the Kansas City region and, in 2017, served as the president of the Wyandotte County Economic Development Corporation. He is currently serving this term year as a board member, and he also represents Wyandotte County, Kansas as a board member for the Kansas City Area Development Council. He served 13 years on the City of De Soto, Kansas Planning Commission, including three years as Chairman. In 2017, Kevin was elected to the City of De Soto City Council.

Rosana Privitera Biondo President and Owner, Mark One Electric Company

Rosana Privitera Biondo is a founding employee of Mark One Electric Co., Inc., a specialty electrical contracting firm. In 1994, after 20 years with the company as an employee and as Secretary and Treasurer, she became the President and an owner of Mark One. Rosana currently oversees the day-to-day operations of the company and has three Executive Vice Presidents, a Senior Vice President of Business Development, Director of Operations, Director of Administration, Director of Service and Controller. Under her leadership, the company has been listed as the number one electrical contractor in the Kansas City Business Journal.

Jason Sanders Business Development Manager, Turner Construction Company

As Turner’s Business Development Manager, Jason Sanders leads sales pursuits and marketing activities, helping to grow the Kansas City office. A graduate of the University of Missouri, Jason is a LEED Accredited Professional and a DBIA Designated Professional. He has worked on many notable area projects, including Kansas Speedway, Overland Park Convention Center & Sheraton Hotel, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Garmin International Phase III Expansion, and the Downtown Olathe Parking Garage. Jason has spent more than 20 years in the Kansas City market working with subcontractors, subcontractor consultants, architects, engineers, owner representatives, developers, owners, and end users.

Heidi Thummel Director of Business Development, GBA

Heidi Thummel relocated to Kansas City in 2001 for a job opportunity and has dedicated her career to the A/E/C industry and economic development initiatives. Since 2007, she has led the GBA team in business development, with a focus on client relationships and strategic growth. Outside of GBA, she actively mentors young professionals, participates in civic organizations and loves to golf. This year she will serve as 2019 Chairman of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce/EDC. Other notable board positions include the Johnson County Community College Foundation and Johnson County Transportation Council.

Tim Barton Managing Partner, Edison District

Tim Barton founded Freightquote in 1998, leveraging technology to create a better way for carriers and shippers to work together. As Chairman and CEO, Tim grew Freightquote to be the largest online freight brokerage, handling over one million shipments each year. Freightquote was acquired by a Fortune 200 company in 2015. Tim’s innovation and leadership have been acknowledged by Ernst and Young, who awarded him Entrepreneur of the Year, and by Entrepreneur Magazine with a top five spot on their Hot 100 list. Today, Tim mentors and advises startups and established companies looking to transform their businesses through technology. He is the founder of Edison Factory, an investment and consulting firm based in Austin and Kansas City.

Justin Duff Director, Development, VanTrust Real Estate

Justin Duff is Director of Development for VanTrust Real Estate, where he is responsible for evaluating build-to-suit and speculative development opportunities. Justin incorporates his over 15 years of experience across a wide variety of product types. Some recent projects include Burns & McDonnell’s World Headquarters expansion, Plaza Vista Office Development and Meadowbrook Park, a 139-acre golf course redevelopment project that includes single family homes, town homes, multifamily units, residences for senior living and a boutique hotel and restaurant. Justin is LEED Accredited and a graduate of the University of Central Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management.

Gwen Locher Managing Partner, LANE4 Property Group

Through hands-on leadership, Gwen Locher oversees LANE4’s entire operation as Managing Partner. She leads the company’s initiatives to ensure profitable success for their clients, team of real estate agents and the company’s ownership group. In her 20 years of real estate experience, Gwen has managed more than 7 million square feet of properties nationally. In addition to her leadership at LANE4, Gwen is very active in the Kansas City community. She holds board positions at the KCADC, Urban Land Institute and Enterprise Bank and has been the recipient of several professional honors, including The Kansas City Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business.

Michael McKeen President, EPC Real Estate Group

Mike McKeen, an owner and President of EPC Real Estate Group, LLC, focuses on the company’s long-range planning, client relationships and the creation and financing of innovative developments that are rewarding for customers, investors and communities alike. Mike entered the industry in 2002 and has been actively involved in over $1.5 billion dollars of construction and development of various product types. Before joining his partners in the formation of EPC Real Estate Group, LLC in 2014, Mike worked with Briarcliff Development Company and Turner Construction.

Thomas Valenti Managing Member, Cameron Group

Tom Valenti is an attorney-turned-real-estate-developer. He founded Cameron Group in 2001 after a long career at the Pyramid Companies, where he is still a partner. Cameron has developed retail, office, residential, medical, hotels and mixed use real estate.

Keith Copaken Principal, Copaken Brooks

Keith Copaken is a principal at Copaken Brooks and is active across the entire spectrum of real estate development, including project conception, city approvals, leasing, development, management, financing and investment. Keith is integrally involved in Copaken Brooks’ five-plus-million-square-foot office, retail and industrial portfolio, as well as the firm’s governance and strategic direction.

RJ Trowbridge - Moderator Vice President, JLL

RJ Trowbridge joined JLL in 2018 and is a Vice President of Office Brokerage. RJ specializes in landlord representation services, owner/user sales and medical office consulting. His expertise in creating innovative marketing strategies and his ability to access the right tenants for projects has enabled him to become a trusted partner for his clients. Over the past five years, RJ has enjoyed the opportunity to lease several Class A office portfolios across Kansas City and has completed over 1.5 million square feet of sale and lease transactions for his healthcare clients.

Josh Woodbury Vice President of Acquisitions, Woodbury Corporation

Joshua Woodbury is a Director and serves as Vice President of Acquisitions of Woodbury Corporation. He is instrumental in asset management and growth strategies at Woodbury Corp., a 100-year-old, fourth generation family business. He is experienced with transit-oriented development (TOD) projects, energy management initiatives and public-private partnerships. Josh is a licensed Realtor, a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and is its State Director for UT/ID/MT, and a member of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society and Urban Land Institute. He received a B.A. in History from Brigham Young University with a minor in Business, a J.D. from the University of Utah and a M.S. in Real Estate Development from Columbia University.

David Rezac Vice President, Development, VanTrust Real Estate

David Rezac brings with him more than 26 years of experience in commercial real estate and development. Over the past two and a half decades, David has provided design and project management for complex development projects across Kansas City and gained an acute understanding of the needs of owners, developers and builders that has repeatedly resulted in successful projects for his clients and the community. He is committed to fostering a collaborative work environment and delivering results. At VanTrust, David uses his keen insight and attention to detail to oversee project design, development and project management throughout the Midwest region.

Steve Foutch Owner and CEO, Foutch Brothers

Steve Foutch has been in the architectural field his entire career, from constructing grain elevators with his brother in college to designing hospitals for Hansen Lind Meyer in Iowa City and leading master planning efforts for Ameritech in Chicago. Sprint brought him to Kansas City, but his architectural career as a Partner with Gastinger Walker Harden Architects began his journey into development. In 2004, Steve helped found Foutch Brokers, which now has nearly 200 employees and has become a recognized name in the historic renovation industry. Strong vision and integrity are reflected in all Foutch Brothers properties, showing a dedication to quality housing for all ages and incomes, solving difficult building re-purposing opportunities and even creating new venues in sports and fitness centers.

Mark Moberly Director of Development, Sunflower Development Group

Mark is a 2005 graduate of William Jewell College and 2006 graduate of University of Missouri - Kansas City. While at UMKC for grad school, he started his career in banking at Hawthorn Bank in Lee’s Summit, MO. In November 2011, Mark joined Sunflower Development Group, focusing on the firm’s lending and tax credit relationships as well as project underwriting. His role has since grown, now involving all aspects of business development and project management. He is intimately involved with tax credit investor negotiations, solicitation of financing, securing private investment and project design, bidding and construction. Mark has been a resident of downtown Kansas City for 13 years and is active in a number of charitable groups and social activities, including serving on the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Kansas City.

Andy Rieger President, J. Rieger & Co.

A Kansas City native, Andy Rieger resurrected Jacob Rieger & Co. distillery in 2014. Founded in 1887 by Jacob Rieger, Andy’s great-great-great grandfather, the original distillery closed during Prohibition. Andy, a graduate of Southern Methodist University with a double major in Mathematics and Finance, has a background in private equity and investment banking. His executive experience combined with a passion for manufacturing and brand-building have fueled his transition to daily operations at the distillery.

Brian Kaberline - Moderator Editor, Kansas City Business Journal

Brian Kaberline leads the Business Journal’s print and online editorial operations. He has been with the publication for 30 years, covering numerous beats as a reporter before serving in editor roles. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas and resides in Lee’s Summit.

Alissia Canady Candidate for Mayor

Alissia Canady was elected in 2015 to the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri to represent the Fifth Council District. She is an attorney in private practice. Prior to being elected, she was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Jackson County. Alissia is a proven advocate for victims and has worked with neighborhood leaders implementing crime prevention initiatives. As a mayoral candidate, Alissia believes that Kansas City must create momentum to support neighborhoods where families are safe, business is booming, and the community is thriving as a whole.

Jolie Justus Candidate for Mayor

Jolie Justus represents Kansas City’s Fourth District. She comes to the Council after eight years as a Missouri State Senator, where she served as Minority Leader. For 20 years, Jolie has been the Director of Pro Bono Services for the law firm of Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP. She volunteers her time with several community organizations, including service as an Adjunct Professor at University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. Jolie received her J.D. from UMKC. She and her wife Lucy make their home in the Longfellow neighborhood with a pack of crazy rescue dogs and a sporadically productive urban garden.

Steve Miller Candidate for Mayor

Steve Miller was born and raised in Kansas City. He has served as a Construction Attorney for more than 35 years, solving complex problems on projects like the airport and streetcar in cities across the nation. He is a founding partner of the Miller Schirger Law Firm. Statewide leadership asked Steve to serve the Missouri Department of Transportation, an entity larger than the City, for seven years as a member and as a two-term chair of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. As chair, Steve saved taxpayers $600 million, oversaw $6 billion in infrastructure improvements and brought back millions of dollars to Missouri from Washington, D.C.

Jermaine Reed Candidate for Mayor

Jermaine Reed was first elected in 2011 and assumed office as the youngest city council member in Kansas City history. In 2015, he was reelected by an overwhelmingly majority vote to his second term as councilman for the Third District, representing over 78,000 residents in Kansas City’s historic urban core. Jermaine believes in leadership through public service. His public-private development model, focused on renewing urban landscapes, has helped revitalize Kansas City’s urban core. A first generation college graduate, Jermaine received his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Missouri at Columbia and his Executive Masters of Public Administration from the University of Missouri at Kansas City’s Bloch School of Management.

Scott Taylor Candidate for Mayor

Scott Taylor has served on the Kansas City Council since 2011 and now Chairs the Planning, Zoning, and Economic Development Committee, where every major development project during Kansas City’s momentum has been shaped, including the downtown Convention Hotel, Riverfront development, downtown projects and developments, new East side developments and new Cerner campus in South KC with 16,000 new jobs, and West Bottoms such as the redevelopment of the old Kemper Arena into the Hy-Vee Arena. Scott also started and chaired the first ever Small Business Committee to provide support to local small businesses and cut the red tape.

Scott Wagner Candidate for Mayor

Scott Wagner represents the First District at-large. He also serves as Mayor Pro Tem and Chairman of the City Council Finance and Governance Committee. Scott has worked to develop and revitalize a broad range of projects, from improving several key corridors in the Northland including Vivion Road to brining in further investment to the new Northland Industrial Park and expansion of the Hunt Midwest Industrial Park. Scott formerly worked with an agency and owned his own marketing business for 16 years. He grew up in Kansas City and is a graduate of Oak Park High School and William Jewell College. He holds a Bachelor of Science in History, Business and Economics.

Quinton Lucas Candidate for Mayor

Quinton Lucas represents the city’s Third District at-large. Quinton spent most of his youth residing in the city’s urban core with a single mother and two older sisters. After graduating from Barstow High School, Washington University in St. Louis and Cornell Law School, Quinton became one of the youngest tenure-track law professors in the country. In addition to his duties on City Council and his involvement with several community organizations, Quinton is currently a practicing attorney, a lecturer at the University of Kansas School of Law and a candidate for Mayor of Kansas City.

With a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation in the for-profit sector and social entrepreneurship and innovation in the public and nonprofit sector, our vision is to be Kansas City’s preeminent school of management focusing on entrepreneurial and innovative thinking as the foundation for transforming talent and achieving sustainable growth in for-profit, public and nonprofit enterprises.

The Block School of Management at UMKC offers a Master of Science in Entrepreneurial Real Estate, which is a 30-hour program and is taught by highly trained faculty and industry professionals. This program is the only opportunity to learn the “art and science” of real estate in the region. The Lewis White Real Estate Center supports the real estate program through continuing education offerings, community outreach activities, scholarships and student organizations.

Today’s forum explores this same philosophy that we exercise on our campus. JLL’s partnership with UMKC creates a unique learning experience for real estate professionals to further their industry knowledge, develop professional contacts and advance their careers. Licensed real estate agents and licensed real estate appraisers participating in today’s conference will receive continuing education credits as stated on the event website.
