  • Welcome!Welcome!

The ARO Screener Tool is intended to reveal those math skills that your students have not yet mastered, thus hindering them from grasping new material. The results of the Screener Assessments highlight consistent problem areas, and make recommendations as to which Math Navigator modules are appropriate for each student.

This guide is intended to help you set up an account, administer the Screener Assessment to your students, and understand the subsequent reports. Please keep in mind that the Screener Assessment is only one of the multiple ARO assessments you will have access to once you implement the Math Navigator program. Other ARO assessments include Pre-test Assessments prior to starting a module, Checkpoints to ensure your students are on-track, individual Student Progress Reports, and Post-tests to benchmark the growth the students have made after completing a module.

Should you have any questions after you review this walkthrough, please contact the ARO helpdesk at www.pearsoncommunity.com/formlibrary/arosupport or 877.561.4327.

Now that you have completed the registration portion of ARO, you can begin the assessment portion – the Screener administration.

This test can be taken online or via paper/pencil. Turn to the following pages for test administration.

Assigning Screeners to StudentsPrior to administering the Screener test, the administrator or teacher must assign the test to every student.

Select the class that will be assigned the Screener. Here we see “Math Class 1” is selected. Choose the Manage tab from the upper navigation bar and program Math Navigator Common Core. Select Associate Students to Test.

  • Assigning Screeners to StudentsOnce you select Associate Students to Test, you will be taken to a drop down menu of all the tests available for assignment. Pick the Screener you’d like to assign.

**While it is most logical to assign a Grade 4 Screener to a student in 4th grade, refer to the Appendix to find a “Screener Index” overview which correlates every Screener to various math topics. If your students haven’t yet entered 4th grade, much of the material on the Grade 4 Screener will be unfamiliar.

    ~14~

  • Assigning Screeners to StudentsOnce you choose a Screener, you will be given the option to select test dates. This will be the range of dates you give a specific student to take that Screener. If the student fails to take the test within that given time period, you will need to expand the test dates in order for that test to be made available.

Upon selecting “add” you will see a confirmation page indicating those chosen students have been assigned to the Screener.

    ~15~

  • Taking the Screener via Paper/PencilNow that you have assigned your students to a Screener, you are ready to administer the test.

If your students are taking the Screener via paper/pencil, you or your student will be able to enter the results into ARO. To do so, select the Class (i.e., Math Class 1) and choose the Manage tab.

Upon choosing Manage, select Math Navigator Common Core and choose Enter Student Data.

    ~16~

  • Taking the Screener via Paper/Pencil: Test Data Entry1.

    2.

    3.

Select the Screener for which you are entering test data.

    Select the student.

Enter the test data in the appropriate question box.

Data is saved automatically, so the form does not need to be completed at one time.

    ~17~

  • Taking the Screener via Paper/Pencil: Test Data Entry

Once you have entered the data, you will be able to preview before hitting “submit final” which will prevent further editing.

  • Taking the Screener OnlineFor online administration, every student will log into the actual ARO site at http://aro.pearsoncmg.com/ (the same link you have access to once you created an ARO account).

Let’s take a look at Monica Gellar. Her username is 123dc. She will use this username to enter into ARO AND to use as her password.

**A student’s username and password are the same.

A student will use their username to log into ARO. This username is also their password.

  • Taking the Screener Online

Once the student has logged into http://aro.pearsoncmg.com/ using her username as the username AND password, she will see the test assigned to her on the home screen.

  • Taking the Screener Online

The student can now begin to take the test.

**Note: On average, a Screener should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete.

Be sure to instruct your students to click the “final” button in order for responses to be submitted and saved.

  • Types of ReportsAfter your students have completed the Screener test, results will automatically be generated and arranged in reports known as the Screener Summary Report and the Screener Detail Report. These reports will recommend the modules most appropriate for specific students.

Click on the Reports tab at the top navigation bar, choose “Math Navigator Common Core Reports”, and select a report to view.

    1.

    2.

    ~23~

  • How to Generate the Screener Summary ReportThe Screener Summary Report will give you an overview of the Screener results for the class. Most importantly, it will indicate which modules are recommended for students who took the Screener.

Select the Screener Summary Report. You will be prompted to choose the screener grade level for which you would like to review.

After choosing a grade level, the next screen will give you the option to:

    • Generate results in a specific format

    • The date range in which the test was

    completed

Click submit once these fields are determined.

  • Screener Summary Report: Recommending Modules for Specific Students

By clicking on the hyperlinked 22.2%, you will see the names of the students who scored 50% or lower.

As a result, these students are recommended to use the module “Using Operations to Solve Complex Problems”.

The results are organized by the percent and number of students who are in need of specific modules. Any student who scores 50% or lower will be recommended for specific modules.

Looking at this example, 22.2% of the students, a numerical value of two students, who took the Grade 6 Screener are recommended to use the module “Using Operations to Solve Complex Problems”.

  • Additional Screener Summary Report Information: Students who may need further assessment

    ~30~

Students who score 20% or lower on a Screener are automatically recommended for further screening. The hyperlink below will list the students who scored 20% or lower. It is suggested that these students be further assessed with a Screener that is a level lower than the one initially taken.

In this example, clicking on the hyperlink, we see Alex Aaberg scored 7% on the Grade 6 Screener. As a result, it is recommended that Alex take the Grade 5 Screener.

  • How to Generate the Screener Detail ReportThe Screener Detail Report gives you item level detail, by student, so you can see specific areas where your students - and class - struggle.

Under the Reports tab, select the Screener Detail Report. You will be prompted to choose the screener grade level for which you would like to review.

After choosing a grade level, the next screen will give you the option to:

    • Include specific student names

    • Generate results in a specific format

    • The date range in which the test was

    completed

Click submit once these fields are determined.

    ~31~

  • All boxes in yellow indicate incorrect responses. Each number is equivalent to the multiple choice letter on the test (i.e., 1=A, 2=B, etc). Note the various features this report contains.

    ~32~

    Screener Detail Report: Incorrect Responses

About 5-6 questions on the Screener are assigned to each of the Course modules.

  • Screener Detail Report: How to determine misconceptions

Note question 2 under “Using Operations to Solve Complex Problems” resulted in many incorrect answers.

Click on the Q2 hyperlink to see the question and multiple choices offered.

    1.

Every multiple choice answer is displayed along with the percentage of students who chose a particular response. Each response correlates to a different misconception.

    2.

3.Students who chose response D likely chose this response due to the indicated misconception.

Each response is correlated to a different misconception.

    ~33~

  • Screener Detail Report: Summary of Results

Scroll to the right of the Screener Detail Report, and you will find a summary of results.

Based on the answers students selected on the Screener questions, ARO will suggest the modules, here at the top, that students should be enrolled in.

Looking at a column with many yellow boxes indicates the need for the skill set in this module.

    ~34~

  • Additonal Info:Creating an ARO Account: Move/Copy Students

If you only need to import a select number of students as opposed to a large class, choose the Move/Copy Students option.

Here we see all the students enrolled in Math Class 1. We have the option to move students to Math Class 2, place students in both Math Class 1 and Math Class 2, and vice versa.
