We had a record number of exhibits (624), and a great turn out in visitors supporting the show. It was a very busy day. Thank you to all. There are some minor changes within the show schedule. You are all keen bakers and Jam makers, making these sections quite crowded, but what a fantastic display. In order to help the judging process for the Fruit Jam class, this class will be split. There will be one class for “Berry” fruit jams e.g. raspberry, strawberry, blackberry etc. and one for others such as stone fruit jams e.g. plum, apricot etc. In the crowded culinary classes a cocktail stick will be provided for exhibitors to securely attach their identifying competitor number ticket slips to their exhibits. Where there is a change from last year a hash tag “#” symbol can be seen next to the change within this booklet. Please note it is important that exhibitors do not move other exhibits already on the table. Please ask a show steward for assistance. There is a new trophy, The Station Rd Co-Op Trophy for the Best in Show Craft item across the Craft classes. Uncle Henry’s, Emma Ward, our culinary classes judge apologised as she could not make it on show day last year but her deputy Katie came along, took the reins and did a fantastic job. Katie is back again this year Last year we had a specific “Staging” table/area for you to prepare exhibits ready for the display benches. Welcome to our annual September show competition 1

Despite the appalling rain nearly all day in last year’s show, so many of you turned out. We had a record

number of exhibits (624), and a great turn out in visitors supporting the show. It was a very busy day. Thank

you to all.

There are some minor changes within the show schedule. You are all keen bakers and Jam makers,

making these sections quite crowded, but what a fantastic display. In order to help the judging process for

the Fruit Jam class, this class will be split. There will be one class for “Berry” fruit jams e.g. raspberry,

strawberry, blackberry etc. and one for others such as stone fruit jams e.g. plum, apricot etc. In the crowded

culinary classes a cocktail stick will be provided for exhibitors to securely attach their identifying competitor

Hints & Tips for exhibitors #

Exhibits should be in good condition. Neat and clean presentation will always go in your favour. If you have

more than one item in the same class add an A, B, C etc. to your issued competitor’s number slip. Note some

classes are restricted to a MAX of 2 exhibits; check the appropriate class heading text in this booklet.

Give yourself plenty of time to sort your exhibits and to stage (present) them, mistakes are often made if

you are in a rush. Check your entry form reflects what you have actually put in the show. Read the show

schedule and the rules to ensure what you have entered complies. Double check that your competitor

number slip is in place with your exhibit and the item has been included on your entry form.

1)THE EXHIBITOR must be an amateur in the respective class, and must live within a five mile radius of Kirton in

Lindsey Town Hall. All classes are open except Top Tray (class 23), Top Vase (class C20) and the KLAGS Members

competition (Group K).

2)ENTRY FEE in all classes is £0.20p ea, there is no fee for group K. It will assist the Show Secretary if a completed

entry form is handed in with the exhibits.

An exhibitor can be awarded more than one cash prize in any one class. Only the best winning entry of that

exhibitor in that class will count towards their score for the purpose of a trophy.

4) JUDGING will be the rules of the RHS, NAFAS or appropriate Society. In all cases the judges decision will be final.

5) TIME TABLE Staging 08:30a.m. to 11:15 a.m . – Judging 11:30a.m. to 1:30p.m #

Public 2:00p.m. to 4:00p.m . - AWARDS 3:30p.m. followed by raffle

Exhibits must only be removed after the presentation of awards and raffle

Exhibitors number slips must accompany each exhibit and the exhibitor is asked to state the CULTIVAR if known #

Prize money must be collected before 5:00p.m. at the show secretary’s desk, failure to do so may result in loss

PRIZE TICKETS MUST BE LEFT WITH THE EXHIBIT UNTIL AFTER THE PRESENTATIONS.

6) EACH EXHIBIT will be the product of the exhibitor’s own effort; plants must have been grown on for three

months if purchased; kits must not have been used in Groups F, G, or H except classes F6 and F7. Group E may use

purchased flowers. Where appropriate, judges may cut or sample exhibits. The committee reserves the right to

visit the garden of any exhibitor.

7) THE EXHIBIT must be presented according to the convention normal to that class, using the exhibitors own

containers except where specified.

Wines should be exhibited in clear Bordeaux type bottles, fitted with ”sherry” style stoppers, . . #

white labels 2” x 1” (5cm. x 2.5cm) positioned 1” (2.5cm) from the bottom of the bottle.

Special rules for Class A23 and C20 are included in this schedule.

8) The members, officers, or servants of KLAGS will accept NO LIABILITY for any loss or breakages or injury to

materials or person.

9) COMPLAINTS or disputes must be presented to the Show Secretary, in writing before 3:30pm on the day of the

show. A 50p fee will be levied, refundable if the complaint is justified.

Top Tray

(KLAGS members only)

COMPETITION RULES

1 Top Tray class is for a collection of three types of vegetables taken from the following list of

eight. The quantity of each vegetable required for the collection is given in brackets:

Carrots (3), Cauliflowers (2), Onions (3), Parsnips (3), Peas (6 pods), Potatoes (3), Runner

Beans (6 pods), Tomatoes (6). Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of 20 points.

This is split into 3 sections as follows: 7 points for size, shape and colour; 7 points for

condition; 6 points for uniformity. The overall mark will therefore be out of a total of 60.

2 All vegetables are to be displayed for effect. The vegetables must be displayed within an area

measuring 45cm x 60cm (18” x 24”), without bending any part of them. No part of any exhibit

may exceed the size of the tray. A tray or board measuring 45cm x 60cm (18” x 24”) can be

used to display the vegetables, or the area can simply be marked on the staging. Where a tray

has a lip or edge, it is the internal measurements that must not exceed 45cm x 60cm (18” x

24”).

3 A black cloth is permitted, and the tray may be painted. Parsley is allowed for garnishing, but

no other foliage or accessories, such as plates, sand, rings, etc, will be allowed. Onion tops

may be tied or whipped using raffia or string.

4 The winner of the Top Tray class will receive a £10 Brigg Garden Centre Voucher, the second

place will receive a £5 Brigg Garden Centre Voucher and the third place will receive £3 cash.

NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS AND JUDGES

Carrots and parsnips must have foliage trimmed to 7.5cm (3”)

Peas and beans must be displayed with some stalk still attached.

Tomatoes must be displayed with calyces (the green flower bud case).

Judges may handle exhibits, open pods etc to check for quality

The tray, board or staging must not be cut or mutilated in any way at all – such as cutting

holes for standing onions in.

Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Tray class, remembering that entries

may come from inexperienced exhibitors

The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors’ cards.

Any queries that may arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should be referred

to, and decided by the show officials

Failure to abide by any of these rules will lead to disqualification

COMPETITION RULES

1 Top Vase class is for a vase of mixed flowering stems containing a total of between five and

10 stems, taken from a minimum of two different “kinds” of plants. Please note that it is two

different KINDs of plants, two different verities of the same plant are NOT two “kinds”.

2 The display will be judged out of a total of 35 points, split in to: 25 points for the colour, form,

condition, quality, and freshness of the flowers on display and 10 points for the overall

presentation and effect of the flowers in the vase. The vase will be viewed from all

directions. Judging of the flowers should be to the normal rules used for other classes.

3 Stems used in the display must be showing flowers only; no seed heads or berries will be

allowed.

4 The vase can be any shape and size and made from any material, but must be in proportion to

the display. No marks are awarded for the vase itself

5 No accessories whatsoever such as bows and additional foliage will be allowed. Foliage which

is growing naturally from the flowering stem, and still attached to the stem, is allowed.

Packing material – including Oasis – to keep the stems in place is allowed.

6 The winner of the Top Vase class will receive £10.00 Brigg Garden Centre voucher, the second

place will receive a £5 Brigg Garden Centre voucher and the third place receive £3 cash

NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS AND JUDGES

Flowering stems can be taken from ANY flowering plant.

The different kinds of plants need to be taken from different genera. For instance, pinks,

carnations and sweet William – which are all dianthus – would not be classed as different

kinds.

Only fresh, home-grown flowers can be used in the vase. No dried or silk flowers are allowed.

A vase, by definition, is any vessel that can be used to hold cut flowers and which is taller

than it is wide at it its widest point.

Top Vase class is open to All KLAGS members and is not intended purely for growers who

regularly display single species classes at shows.

Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Vase class, bearing in mind that

entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors.

Judges and exhibitors should note that the display has to be viewed all round.

The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judge on the exhibitors cards.

Any queries that arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should be referred to

and decided by the show officials

Kirton Lindsey Amateur GardenerS (KLAGS)

Why not join us; everyone is welcome to come along to our monthly meetings.

Each month we have a guest speaker and a wide variety of topics are covered

over the year. Twice in the year we arrange visits to other gardens. Previous

years have been to open gardens or local nurseries (usually followed up with

coffee/tea and cake)

10 “Our Recipe” . . . for Class H7 and for Class H8

Iced Bakewell Tart Tray Bake #

Ingredients

500g sweet shortcrust pastry (bought or own recipe).

6 tbsp strawberry jam

200g butter, softened

200g Castor Sugar

4 medium eggs

100g ground almonds

100g self raising flour, plus extra for dusting

1 tsp almond extract

300g icing sugar

20 glace cherries

25g toasted flaked almonds

Method

1) Preheat the oven to 200c/fan180c/gas6. On a lightly floured surface roll

out the pastry to fit the base and sides of a 30cmx20cm baking tray. spread

the jam over the pastry base.

2) Place the butter and the castor sugar into a large bowl and beat with an

electric whisk until smooth and creamy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time,

adding one tbsp of ground almonds after each addition.Add the flour,

remaining almonds and almond extract and stir well. Spoon the mixture over

the jam, spreading to make an even layer.

3) Bake for 35-40 minutes until well risen, firm and golden. Remove from the

oven and leave to cool in the tin.

4) In a small bowl, mix together the icing sugar and 3 tbsp of water to make

a fairly thick icing.When the tart is cold, spoon the icing on top, spreading

evenly. Decorate with the glace cherries and flaked almonds and leave to

set. Cut the tart into squares or rectangles and arrange on platters to serve.

L1 . PAINTING. max A3

Using any wet applied medium and subject matter of your own choice show your imagination

and skill. Excite the eye with your choice of subject and demonstrate your ability to use the

materials well.

Class L2* . . . Beginnings and/or endings

Life itself is an obvious subject. The joy of birth in all species to the end of that journey - for

example a decaying bird carcass can be quite beautiful.

The possibilities are endless…every task…every day…has a beginning and an ending.

Class L3* . . . Humour

A laugh a day is essential!

Look for human interaction, funny faces, humour in street signs and everyday situations.

Class L4* . . . Games

Outdoor games can involve teams, such as bowls and cricket, or can stretch the abilities of the

individual (eg golf). Can you reflect the exhilaration of the game or the excitement of the

crowd?

Indoor games, old-fashioned games (shove ha’penny), card games, board games, all provide

rich source material.

Class L5* . . . Local culture/environment

From the local shops in Kirton, to the markets of Brigg and even Doncaster with its’ beautiful

displays of fish, meat and vegetables, our region has a rich culture. Observe the characters

who shop, meet and work in these areas.

Food production is reflected in our local windmill and in the surrounding agricultural landscape.

The cliff and expansive landscape of this area is very dramatic.

For all the “crafty” people out there, we have a new Best in

Show – “Crafts” trophy. This trophy is sponsored by Station Rd

CO OP, Kirton Lindsey and is for the Best in Show across all

the crafts section (group M classes). Are you going to be crafty

enough to pick up this award?

The Wilkinson Trophy – Novice Wine has also been renewed.

The original one being a little tired.

We are reviewing all our trophies and each year we hope to

replace the ones that are getting worse for wear.
