Beineinu - Between UsOn Shabbat, October 29, we will honor all of the clergy who have guided this congregation throughout the years, many of whom will be with us. Then, on Sunday, October 30, the Gala will be an opportunity for us to revel in the accomplishments of the past 150 years and to lay a solid foundation for the years to come. I hope you will join us for both of these signature events. I hope, too, that you will

consider an endowment gift to help ensure our future. Every day, B’nai Jeshurun touches lives. It inspires, teaches, lends a caring hand, heals, advocates, builds bonds of friendship and community. It is a center for prayer and a leading force for Israel and social justice. But, we cannot do all this without your help. Your gift makes all this possible.

*************************************************************************The notes of the shofar remind us of the broken nature of our world and of our obligation to repair it. We begin with the tekiah, a long unbroken note that represents wholeness. It is followed by shevarim, which is broken into three shorter blasts that sound like sobbing. Their wail reminds us of the suffering in the world and the cries of pain and injustice that surround us. These are followed by teruah, comprised of nine staccato blasts that sound an alarm, calling us to action with an extreme sense of urgency. The series ends with a return to the tekiah’s long, solid complete blast, placing before us the goal of moving from the world as it is to the world as it should be, reminding us that fixing our shattered world is a task within our reach if we would only make the effort.

One way you can do that is by joining us in GGC’s Get Out the Vote drive this fall. Along with other member organizations, we will go door-to-door urging people to vote. This is a non-partisan, non-candidate, non-issue voter campaign. Our goals are to listen to what concerns our community and to increase involvement in the democratic process. We will canvass neighborhoods on Sundays, October 9 and November 6. We will meet at the synagogue at 12:30 pm and return by 6:30 pm. (On October 9, we will also leave together from Glenville cemetery for those attending the memorial service).

Naomi and I wish you a Shana Tova and Chag Sameach!

Rabbi Stephen WeissSpecial Shabbatot

As we wrap up our final month of celebrations for the 150th Anniversary, we will pay tribute to these special groups by honoring them during Shabbat morning services. Help us spread the word by inviting others, especially those who may no longer belong to BJC.

October 15: Leadership Shabbat (We also will have a birthday cake to celebrate the actual anniversary and dedicate the beautiful 150th Anniversary quilt then as well)

President’s MessageIn the annual cycle of synagogue life, this is the season for coming together. Each year, our entire congregation comes together for services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It is stirring to walk into the David J. Moskowitz Sanctuary to visualize the crowd of members, listen to the chorus of the Cantor, Rabbis, choir and members sing and daven together,

greet family and friends and welcome new members. Similarly, this is true for those who regularly attend High Holy Day services in the auditorium of the Gross Schechter Day School.

Each of us has our own unique way of participating in the life of our synagogue community. Many of us seek to extend that sense of community, so keenly felt on the High Holy Days, through active engagement in synagogue life during the year. Of course, segments of our congregation are together for prayer, education and friendship regularly. Many of our members come together for daily minyanim, Friday night, Shabbat morning and holiday services, book groups, Rosh Hodesh groups, Torah study groups, havurot, catering, Adult Bat Mitzvah class, Men’s Club, Sisterhood, Hazak, Atid, Mishpachot, Early Childhood programs and more.

There are also many avenues for engagement through leadership. Committees bring people together to serve the needs of our congregants, and to ensure the synagogue is available, accessible and responsive to our members at all times. The Jewish New Year is an ideal time to perform an engagement checkup and decide if there are committees or groups you would like to join. We also sometimes engage directly with our clergy through a simcha - bringing family and friends together for a baby naming, brit milah, Bar or Bat Mitzvah or wedding. Other times, we may receive assistance from our clergy during a challenging time or event.

I thank you for your commitment to the work that sustains our congregation and continued support of B’nai Jeshurun through investment of your time, skills and philanthropy. B’nai Jeshurun welcomes your engagement each day of the year. Mark joins me in wishing you and your family a happy, healthy and fulfilling New Year.

The holiday of Sukkot is one of my favorites. The Four Species, the lulav and etrog, bring deep meaning to the chag. We “take” and “shake” the lulav and etrog, waving them around in the four

cardinal directions (east, north, west and south) and up and down. I often feel like with each wave singing “Hoshanah (G-d protect us)” that G-d is protecting me with a powerful force field.

The four species (lulav- pine, hadas- myrtle, aravot- willows, and etrog) represent G-d’s bounty. As this is an agricultural holiday celebrating the fall harvest, it seems only right to include the use of produce in the rituals. The rabbis teach that the four species can be compared to four types of people or four parts of our own body (spine, eyes, mouth and heart). When we hold the four species together, it is as if we unify ourselves. We should be the same inside and outside; what we say should be reflected by our actions.

Why is it not simply enough to purchase and hold or display the lulav and etrog? Why must we wave them? The rabbis teach that the waving reminds us that only with motion can we lift ourselves higher and be motivated to overcome challenges and strive to be the best. When we study, the goal is to learn more and move to a deeper level of understanding. Classic Talmud study requires the student to follow the back and forth of legal arguments like the waving back and forth of the lulav.

Shana TovaA story is told of the great Chasidic Rebbe, Reb Zushya, who lived in 18th century Poland. When Reb Zushya was dying, all of his students gathered around him to hear what his final words of wisdom would be. He gathered them

close and began to speak, “When I die and meet God,” he told them, “I don’t fear God asking me, ‘Reb Zushya, why weren’t you more like Abraham?’, because I can tell God I didn’t have the same unbreakable faith that Abraham had. If God asks, ‘Reb Zushya, why weren’t you more like Moses?’, I can tell God that I didn’t possess the same leadership skills as Moses, and if God asks me, ‘Reb Zushya, why weren’t you more like King David?’, I can respond saying that I didn’t have the skills as a warrior that King David had. There’s only one question I fear God asking me: ‘Reb Zushya, why weren’t you more like Reb Zushya?’, because then, what can I say?”

As we approach the High Holy Days, we turn our thoughts to the people we have been over the past year, and the people we want to be in the coming year. In what ways can we improve? How can we make the most of every moment? How do we want others to think of us? In other words, what identity do we want for ourselves and for our children?

Here at the Youth & Learning Center, we are working hard to create a Jewish home that makes all of us proud. Each week, our teachers instill a love of Judaism and Israel in our children. Our Shabbaton counselors create fun and engaging Shabbat experiences for all who participate. In short, we are partnering with parents and family to ensure our students embody the Jewish values and tradition we are teaching. Let us all strive to make this coming year our best one yet!

Shana Tova u’Metuka! Have a happy, healthy and sweet 5777!

7 PM CLASS SELECTIONS

The Ethical Life: Jewish Values in an Age of ChoiceRabbi Hal Rudin-LuriaFrom political and financial scandals to rapid progress in biomedical science and technology, the complex issues of modern society are, at their core, issues of ethical and moral concern. Judaism has a long history of

wrestling with moral questions and responding to them in a way that considers all sides of an issue. Using a curriculum designed by JTS that includes an opening video lesson from JTS professors and American Jewish leaders, we will delve into the sources that help shape our Jewish moral foundation.

100 Daily BlessingsCantor Aaron ShifmanOur tradition advises us to recite 100 blessings each day. We will study the key blessings, their meanings and the rabbinic teachings and legends connected to these prayers.

What Makes a City Jewish?Elise Braverman-Plotkin Using Talmud, memoirs, newspapers and other sources, we will look at Ancient Jerusalem, a shtetl, early American settlements, and even Cleveland. Are there commonalities? Differences? What does a city need to have to be Jewish?

Comparative Religions - Jewish and Christian EthicsTodd RosenbergWe will focus on the similarities and differences around the themes of “Love Your Neighbor,” sin, and the Lord’s Prayer.

Hands-On Jewish ArtsMarjorie FalkLearn silk painting! Each participant will create their own silk challah cover. Please note there is an extra $15 materials fee for this class.

8 PM CLASS SELECTIONS

Not in God’s Name/Putting God SecondRabbi Stephen WeissIs religion the root of intolerance and violence in our world? Or, is it the solution? How do we create a religious tradition that lays a foundation of morality and love? We will explore these questions through two

new books: Not in God’s Name by Jonathan Sacks and Putting God Second by Donniel Hartman. No class October 27.

But How Does Everyone Else Look at This Stuff?Jerry Isaak-ShapiroIt’s not just how we see things; every nation and group of people have their own lens, their own perceived interests and values. We will look at Middle East issues in general and at Israeli-Palestinian issues specifically as if

we were sitting in the most influential capitals of the world, from New Delhi to Brasilia to Beijing.

Jerusalem in LiteratureDr. R. Raphael “Rafi” SimonUsing a seminar approach, the group will explore poetry and prose to provide an historical examination of the significant role played by Jerusalem throughout history. There will be an examination of the role Jerusalem has played within Judaism as

well as some emphasis on the way Christians and Muslims see Jerusalem. We will focus discussion on comparing and contrasting similar and divergent points of view. There will be some home readings distributed to enhance and maximize group discussion time.

Lifeworthy Learning: Where Tradition Meets the 21st Century JewSusan WynerEach of us has been on a continuing lifelong Jewish journey. Sometimes we recognize our Jewish lives as our own interpretation of something we have learned growing up in a family, through selected classes, or by

synagogue participation. But among the things that we learn, some are entertaining (like making latkes at Hanukkah), while other teachings are Lifeworthy — they help us shape our thoughts and actions. Through text studies, discussions and interactive activities, this three-session class will explore how we can make Lifeworthy choices through a Jewish lens. Classes will meet October 27, November 3 and November 10.

Registration is open to the community. Cost is $20 for one class and $30 for two classes. Advance registration preferred through the synagogue office or on our website. Open Library • 6:30 - 7 pm

Mahzorim: You’re CoveredThanks to the generosity of Gayl & Alan Berger and family, you do not need to buy copies of the new High Holy Day prayer book, Lev Shalem, which we are now using. Gayl & Alan have donated 2,500 mahzorim to the congregation, to be held at the synagogue and used each year. When you come to synagogue, you will find your prayer book in the seat pocket in front of you (in the David J. Moskowitz Sanctuary) or on your seat (in Rosenthal Auditorium and at Gross Schechter Day School). We ask that you treat these books with great care and leave them in the pocket or on the seat upon completion of each service so they may be collected and stored from year to year. We are collecting the Mahzor Hadash prayer books for donation. Contact Rafi Simon for more information, or just bring them in.

TashlikhMonday, October 3 • 4:45 pm

Join us for Rosh Hashanah Mincha (afternoon) service at B’nai Jeshurun, immediately following Tashlikh.

Cemetery Memorial ServicesSunday, October 9

One of the customs of the High Holy Day season is to visit the graves of our loved ones. Join our clergy for our annual memorial services.

10:30 am Chesterland Memorial Park 12:00 pm Glenville Cemetery

HIGH HOLY DAY DECORUMWomen should dress modestly, with no bare shoulders, midriffs or mini-skirts. Immodest attire will require the ushers to ask guests to wear a shawl or a wrap. All women who ascend the bimah (altar) must wear a head covering. Males are required to wear a kippa (skullcap) and all Jewish men after Bar Mitzvah age are asked to wear a tallit (prayer shawl). All these items are available for borrowing outside both services. Thank you for dressing appropriately in keeping with the spirit of the hagim.

Over 250 attendees were transported back in time. Testimonials, a multi-media presentation and a concert performance by the volunteer Koleinu Choir conducted by Lynne Yulish brought back many memories for our guests. Florence Meisels Nelson shared her personal reflections and memories of her beloved parents. Our “aha” moment came when the program ended with a benediction from Rabbi Rosenthal and Cantor Meisels. Many thanks to our sponsors, Hazak and the Linden Family in memory of Earl M. Lindenz”l.

Tribute to the Meisels

From the Rabbi (continued from page 3)

The word “lulav” can be dissected into two Hebrew words: Lo Lev, meaning “To G-d is the heart.” When we take the lulav and wave it, we are reminded to focus our heart to G-d and be thankful for our bounty and blessings in our life.

Wishing you and your family a sweet and healthy New Year and Chag Sameach.
