Bill Morgan, Senior Minister Sunday, June 7 WEEKLY WORDS FROM BILL MORGAN GRATITUDE AND FORGIVENESS… “One plants, another waters… But God gives the growth…” 1 Corinthians 3. 5-9 Hmmm. Call this weekly words #616 or so, completing that number of weeks as senior minister here. In our United Methodist Book of Worship – a treasure the depths of which we only skim the surface – there is an Order of Farewell to a Pastor, a litany for congregation and minister. I thank you people of Canterbury United Methodist Church for the love and support you have shown me while I ministered among you. I am grateful for the ways my leadership has been accepted. I ask your forgiveness for the mistakes I have made. As I leave, I carry with me all I have learned and the many blessing I have received here. We receive your thankfulness, offer forgiveness, and accept that you now leave to minister in a new place. We express our gratitude for your time among us. We ask your forgiveness for our mistakes. Your influence on our lives will not leave us with your departure. I accept your gratitude and forgiveness, and I forgive you, trusting our time together and parting are pleasing to God. I release you from turning to and depending on me. I encourage your continuing life here. I will pray for you. I commend you to your new minister .... UM Book of Worship #598 Gratitude, yes. But forgiveness? Perhaps some specifics we can identify here and there. On a deeper level, with all important relationships, there are times we just miss it with one another, when the way we are does not match what we hoped from one another. In any relationship that matters – family, friendship, ministerial, marriage, there is a God-enabled forgiveness that we are never exactly who we want each other to be, so we accept each other as the persons we are. I have expressed before how regardless of the call, preparation, examination, ordination, and appointment of a minister to a congregation, THE ordination that counts is each person who accepts the minister to be his or her minister. For reasons understood and not understood, a minister encounters in every congregation some who never quite receive you as minister. I wish I could tell you it doesn’t hurt, but I can’t. What I can express from the deepest recesses of my psyche and heart is gigantic gratitude for the flood of you who have given me the profound gift of permitting me to be one of your ministers. You continue to bless and minister to me. The arrival of a new minister is a God-given opportunity for YOU to re-up, recommit to prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness through the wonderful/exasperating life of this church. Gratitude and forgiveness for what has been. Lean into the new chapter. This is no time to ‘wait and see’ with cocked head and folded arms how the new guy does. What has worked best for the past 12+ years is when we have all jumped in, splashed and swam like all get out in the sea of God’s unlimited and unconditional love. So, gratitude, forgiveness…and doxology. 8:15 a.m. New Traditions • Rev. Julie Holly 10:30 a.m. All Together Worship Dr. Bill Morgan • Sanctuary 5:00 p.m. The WAY • Rev. Drew Clayton
