LOCAL SCOUTING OPPORTUNITIES
On Tuesday night I had the pleasure
of attending the Annual Reporting
meeting for the Epping North Scout
Group. Some of the youth members
were present to share their experiences and it was evident that they had
thoroughly enjoyed their experiences. Scouting in
2019 offers your child fabulous opportunities to
engage safely with outdoor activities, risk taking and
developing new friendships. If you are interested in
finding out more about the Epping North Scouts
then please visit the website.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
Please don’t forget that students are required to
wear plain black pants as part of the uniform which
means no stripes, logos, colours, brand names,
flowers etc. The weather is quite cold at the moment
so we would encourage students to wear coats to
and from school however they do need to wear the
correct school uniform items under their coats.
The preferred colour of tights and leggings under the
girls’ dresses is black, white or bottle green.
Thank you for assisting to show that all of our
students belong to the EVPS team.
If your child is in Prep and you registered for CSEF
then your child is eligible for a free winter uniform
pack. Please see Deb in the office if you have not
organised for this as yet.
CURRICULUM DAY FRIDAY 16th AUGUST
Please don’t forget to mark your calendars with our
next pupil free day which is next Friday. The OSHC program will operate on this day. Please book in
with Lyn so she can arrange correct student/staff
ratios for the day.
STAFF CHANGES
We have a number of our teachers who will be
commencing Maternity Leave in the coming
weeks. We thank them for their work at our
school and wish them all the best as they begin
anther part of their life journey.
On Friday 16th August we
farewell Jasmine Rolfe who has
been working in 4KK and 2MA
this year. We wish you all the
best Jasmine as you await the birth of your
second child.
When a staff member leaves part way through a year we work extremely hard to replace the
teacher in a timely manner. Our school along with
the majority of other schools in Victoria are
finding it difficult to replace teachers leaving part
way through the year. We do our best to find the
best teachers however from time to time we need
to amalgamate classes or take teachers from
Support Programs. Please be assured that we
exhaust all avenues to ensure continuity of the
programs and classes. If you have any questions
at any time please do not hesitate to email me.
PREPS 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL
Congratulations to the Preps on their terrific
projects. The staff and students had a wonderful
day last Friday and we really enjoyed viewing all
the projects.
NO ASSEMBLIES ON MONDAY 12th AUGUST
We will be participating in our Review on Monday
and as such will not be holding either assembly.
We will resume assemblies on Monday 19th
August with the Prep/Ones and Two/Threes.

KITCHEN & GARDEN PROGRAM
The Year 5 and 6 students were very excited to commence classes
this semester. In the first weeks we discussed expectations, safety,
hygiene, dish washing and clean up procedures and students
undertook a knife skills assessment. We also made placemats to use
on the tables. Our first venture into cooking was to make pancakes.
These proved to be very popular AND delicious, especially when
topped with a choice of jam, choc chips, cinnamon, sugar and our
very own lemons grown in the orchard!

NMR HOCKEY 7’s
EVPS has a boys team playing off at the NMR Hockey 7’s on Wednesday August 7th down at the Greensborough Hockey Club. It was an extremely successful day with both teams making the grand final. We wish the boys team every success at the NMR Finals.
NMR BOYS/MIXED SOCCER FINALS
On Monday August 12th, our EVPS soccer team will compete at the Northern Metropolitan Regional Finals at John Fawkner
College. There are two pools of 3 teams playing off. The winner of each pool will play off in a grand final. The grand final winner
will progress to the State Finals. We wish Bale and the team every success. Go EVPS!
HEALTHY FOOD SNACKS
Cut up pieces of fruit are more likely to be eaten as opposed to whole pieces. Cut up fruit at meal times and for snacks, or place it in your child’s lunchbox cut up . The fruit will also be easier to manage and far less messy!
Kids – ‘Go for your life’
Why should students drink water throughout the day? Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. By the time a person is thirsty they are usually already dehydrated to some extent.
Children rarely drink enough during break times at school and often forget to drink unless reminded. Allowing and reminding students to drink water in class increases the likelihood that they will drink more. Drinking often, especially before, during and after physical activity is the best way to stay hydrated.
How much water should children drink?
The recommended daily amounts of fluid for children and adolescents are:
5 glasses (1 litre) for 5 - 8 year olds
7 glasses (1.5 litres) for 9 - 12 year olds
8-10 glasses (2 litres) for 13+ years * a glass is 200 ml
More water is needed if children are exercising or sweating due to heat.

Platypus killed by litter in Darebin Creek
My name is Therese and I’m a Ranger along Darebin Creek.
Last week we heard the sad news that a platypus had been found just above Northland Shopping Centre, along the Darebin Creek that was entangled in litter. It had a rubber band around its neck, packing straps as well as fishing line that prevented it from feeding. This is very sad as we have worked hard to get these rare creatures to return to our urban waterways. They have only been spotted in the creek twice in 10 years! You can help by picking up litter in your school grounds and on your way to school. Litter that goes down the drain is on its way to your local creek. Rubber bands as well as hair ties are one of the worst litter types as they easily wash into the drains in your school and in the street and into our waterways. Platypus become entangled when feeding. Any litter that is round and has a diameter of eight centimetres or more is a hazard to platypus. It is recom-
mended that you cut rubber bands and hair ties or any round litter before disposing of them in the bin.
Other ways you can help? Organise a clean-up day at school or join a clean-up group such as Darebin Creek
Sweepers or a Friends group. We can also visit your school. Thanks for helping your local wildlife.
