Introducing ALICE Safety Protocol to our Staff and Students Indianapolis Classical Schools is committed to providing the safest possible environment for our students. On Wednesday and Thursday in Advisory this week, students and teachers reviewed the ALICE protocol. What does ALICE mean? Alert: In a safety emergency, we will be alerted to danger. We may be alerted by sight, sound, PA, email, or text. Lockdown: Staff and students will lock classroom doors and barricade to deny entry. Inform: Information will be provided as clearly and quickly as possible to inform responses. We will use plain language and directions. Counter: Individuals may choose to utilize movement, noise, distance, and distractions in a safety emergency if lockdown and evacuation are not possible. Evacuate: Staff and students will move outside to a place of shelter and safety if it is safe to do so. Introducing ALICE Safety Protocol to our Staff and Students

Indianapolis Classical Schools is committed to providing the safest possible environment for our

students. Over the years we have taken great steps in securing our schools such as practicing

safety drills; providing evidence-based safety training to faculty, administration and staff; locking

exterior doors, and installing security cameras.

This year, we have updated our procedures to include the ALICE protocol, a best practice in school

safety. On Wednesday and Thursday in Advisory this week, students and teachers reviewed the

ALICE protocol.

What does ALICE mean?

Alert: In a safety emergency, we will be alerted to danger. We may be alerted by sight, sound, PA,

email, or text.

Lockdown: Staff and students will lock classroom doors and barricade to deny entry.

Inform: Information will be provided as clearly and quickly as possible to inform responses. We

will use plain language and directions.

Counter: Individuals may choose to utilize movement, noise, distance, and distractions in a safety

emergency if lockdown and evacuation are not possible.

Evacuate: Staff and students will move outside to a place of shelter and safety if it is safe to do so.

Additionally, both Riverside and Herron have now installed Alert System

Response buttons throughout our schools. These buttons automatically

contact IMPD in the case of a life-threatening emergency and sound an alarm

to alert the rest of the school. On Thursday, we sounded the ASR alarm as well

as the fire alarm for students so that they could hear the difference. We also

practiced a lockdown drill in classrooms and discussed our designated

reunification sites should we need to evacuate our buildings. The reunification

site for Herron High School is the Harrison Center for the Arts/Redeemer Presbyterian Church, and

the reunification site for Riverside High School is the Riverside Park Recreation Center.

February 18th Online Scheduling Portal Opens Families can access the online scheduling portal through PowerSchool for the 2020-2021 school year. An instructional video will be available detailing how online scheduling can be completed. Online scheduling assists the school counseling team in making our 1:1 meetings more efficient with your scholar! Online scheduling enables you to select courses for your scholar.

February 20th Scheduling Timeline Scheduling timeline will be presented in Advisory to students

February 28th Scheduling Information Parent Session 8:30 AM-9:15 AM We welcome you to join us for a parent information session on scheduling for 2020-2021. We will outline our process and timeline as well as provide information regarding course offerings and graduation requirements. A session will be offered at both RHS and HHS.

March 2nd-March 4th Scheduling Work Time in Advisory Students will build/update their Four Year Plan. Students will also have time to look at course offerings, the course book, and complete online scheduling!

March 6th Online Scheduling Portal Closes The online scheduling portal through PowerSchool for 2020-2021 will close on this date. This is to ensure that school counselors can update courses appropriately and build schedules for the school year.

Beginning March 9th 1:1 Scheduling Every scholar will meet one on one with a school counselor to select courses for the 2020-2021 school year. During one on one meetings, school counselors check to make sure scholars are on track for graduation and are selecting proper courses. School counselors will meet with students during their Seminar or Advisory periods. One on one scheduling will continue through the end of the school year. It does not matter what order your scholar is scheduled nor does it affect placement in courses.

Course selections will NOT be finalized until a signed yellow Course Selection Form is returned to the school counseling team. This is to ensure that you, the parent/guardian, approve the selected courses for the next school year.

Resources will be sent home via automated email as well as posted on our website and Haiku page (https://www.myhaikuclass.com/herronadvising/advising/).

We look forward to another great year and can't wait to select courses with your scholars!

If you have any questions about the scheduling process, don't hesitate to contact me.

New vaccination requirement for 2020-21 school year Indiana began experiencing a hepatitis A outbreak in November 2017 that has resulted in 2,359 cases, 1,312 hospitalizations and 4 deaths to date. In July 2019, a school vaccine requirements advisory group unanimously agreed to require two valid doses of hepatitis A vaccine for all grades beginning in the fall of the 2020-2021 school year. The hepatitis A vaccine is a two-dose series that is routinely recommended beginning at 12 months of age. This two-dose series requires at least six months between doses. This vaccine series is safe and effective at preventing hepatitis A, a highly contagious viral liver infection.

Riverside High School requires that all students receive the first dose of hepatitis A by August 12, 2020, and the second dose by February 12, 2021.

In addition, seniors are required to receive two doses of MCV4 (meningitis) by August 12, 2020. Records may be submitted by fax to 317-231-3759, by email to [email protected], or submitted to Student Services.

The Indianapolis Classical Schools Fund

It takes many resources to establish & sustain the excellence that Herron High School and Riverside

High School have attained. However, ICS faces the ongoing challenge of achieving this with fewer

resources than other public schools receive.

As public charter schools, we only get a portion of the funds that it takes to provide a world-class

education - with an incredible faculty, dedicated one-on-one attention for every student, enrichment

opportunities like field trips, extracurricular clubs & athletics, and global travel opportunities… and it’s not

enough.

This year, we must raise more than $400,000 to meet our operating gap and we need your help! We ask

you to give generously as you are able with a gift to The Indianapolis Classical Schools Fund.

We established The Indianapolis Classical Schools Fund as our annual fundraising initiative to meet this

need. 100% of every gift you make will directly benefit the scholars of Herron High School & Riverside

High School.

Your gift will help to provide the financial support needed to attract and retain the best teachers, finances maintenance and upkeep on our historical campuses, and allows us to offer our award-winning classical, liberal arts curriculum. In the past, these funds have helped to purchase team uniforms and classroom furniture, provide for transportation to events such as the Indiana Ethics Bowl competition, pay the royalties for the school musical, or purchase bus passes for scholars who need them. The fund also supports our emergency fund, which has assisted scholars and their families with utility bills, groceries and housing in times of crisis.

Throughout the year, you’ll receive appeals to give to The Indianapolis Classical Schools Fund. Please choose to support our scholars as you are able. We depend on your support!
