Weekly Update August 21, 2020 1. A reminder that the State Face Mask Mandate is in effect through Sunday, September 13, 2020. In addition, the Tri-County Health Department’s requirement for face masks in public places is also in effect through Wednesday, October 21, 2020. We will continue to follow the Tri-County Health Department’s mandate at all our facilities, programs and amenities. 2. The most up-to-date version of our “By the Numbers” tabulation for our department can be found on the final two pages of this document. It is a great, quick reference list of several facts related to TPRCP. 3. Our new Dog Park is now open and available to the four-legged community to enjoy. It is located in Trail Winds Park, 13485 Holly St. to the west of the recreation center. 4. New picnic tables have been installed in the Cherry Park shelter after the recent spate of vandalism they encountered. Vandalism and graffiti is an ongoing problem and we appreciate the city staff who work together to mitigate this daily. 5. TPRCP and Water Resources staff presented the Naturally Thornton program to Council and shared the next steps. Communication and a greater understanding of the concept will be the key to creating the most appropriate and sustainable shift in Thornton and how we look at public landscapes. Empirical studies at Texas A&M University over the years have shown that creating a balance allows for both flora and fauna to thrive, while the community continues to enjoy enhanced property values and improved health and wellness, being closer to nature. In a water scarce state and a city that is growing quickly, it makes sense to adopt a path that lowers its use while helping the overall environment and initiate greater water security. We are beginning a pilot program across Thornton that will range from 15-20 acres of conversion in 2020. The financial savings could potentially be used for greater community good in other sectors to help close the economic, social, and cultural gaps to continue the work in making Thornton a great place to live, work, play and retire. The presentation can be viewed on our website at the following link. 6. As a reminder to all, there is increased traffic on the roads now with businesses and schools operating again. Please obey the posted speed signs to help keep all our residents safe. 7. Our first archery range will take shape in the coming weeks and we are working closely with a local Girl Scout group to make this a reality, at West Spratte. The facility will also raise the bar for our Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation (AIR) program. 8. Look forward to engaging the community through the “Walk with the Director” program starting in mid- September. Please see the schedule on the following pages.
